10 Best Places to Visit in China - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in China:

Shanghai
Municipality in China
Shanghai, on China’s central coast, is the country's biggest city and a global financial hub. Its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong district’s futuristic skyline, including 632m Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distinctive pink spheres. Sprawling Yu Garden has traditional pavilions, towers and ponds. ― Google

Top 10 Places to Visit in Shanghai - China Travel Documentary

Shanghai is one of the most fascinating cities in China, and in this video I share my personal top 10 places to visit in this amazing city.

Few cities in the world evoke so much imagination as the largest city in China. Rich and glamorous on one corner, rough around the edges on another, Shanghai is truly one of the most fascinating places in the country. Located in the East of China, Shanghai should be high on any traveler’s list.

The video starts off on the Bund, a spectacular waterfront promenade located right in the center of the city. It provides a stunning contrast between historic colonial architecture and the awe-inspiring modern skyline of Pudong on the other side of the Huangpu river. Here, you can get some of the best views across the city. After Pudong, I take you to Nanjing street for some shopping, followed by a moment of calm in the rebuilt Jing’An Temple.

After walking through the People’s (central) park where I encounter a ‘marriage market’, we search for pockets of old Shanghai. These authentic neighborhoods are fast disappearing, as development of apartment towers and shopping malls takes over.

With enough time, it’s possible to plan a few day trips out of Shanghai. Some of my favorite ones are Suzhou, Zhujiajiao, and the impressive Yangshan Port (Shanghai's main container terminal, or harbor). Back in the city, we travel to the outskirts to visit a ‘bicycle graveyard’ and visit a few trade shows. Probably not your regular 'tourist attraction', but interesting places for those interested in doing business in China. The video finishes at the former Expo site, taking you back to one of the largest events ever held in China.

Top 10 Places to Visit in China - Travel Documentary

China is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 best places to visit.

From the ruins of the Great Wall to vibrant megacities. From surreal mountain landscapes to charming riverside villages. Today’s China is a beautiful, complicated, and captivating place.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel documentary is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here's a brief overview of the places in this video.

We start this journey in the stunning riverside village of Fenghuang in central China. The wooden stilt houses are a spectacular sight, and the backstreets are still filled with old world charm. We then continue to Harbin, best known for its Winter tourism. Millions of people usually flock here to visit the amazing Ice and Snow Festival, to admire beautiful sculptures and palaces.

Yangshuo is another spot not to miss, mostly for its mesmerizing mountain landscape of limestone peaks. It’s a great place to witness life in the countryside, and has a relaxed vibe. After Yangshuo we travel to Beijing, the nation’s capital city. The impressive Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park are two main highlights. And the nearby Great Wall of China is truly a sight to behold.

Zhangjiajie is the next destination on my list, and one of China’s most beautiful national parks. It formed the inspiration for the popular movie Avatar. You can get an aerial perspective from the many walkways, and don't miss out on the Glass Bridge here, if you dare at least. I continue my journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heartland of Tibet, and a place that left a deep impression on me. Take into a account that foreign travelers can only visit Tibet as part of a group tour.

Shanghai is a unique city with a jaw-dropping modern skyline, but also has some impressive historic architecture. It’s a busy place to visit, but also has many laidback neighborhoods and quiet streets. Yuanyang, on the other hand, is quintessential rural China, with an epic landscape of rice terraces. It’s a good place to meet some of the minorities living in the South of the country, and eat some local food.

I continue my travels in Qingdao, one of China’s most scenic coastal cities, located on the Yellow Sea. Many Chinese tourists come here to enjoy the beach and eat fresh seafood, but I was particularly impressed by the historic German buildings. I finish this journey in Hong Kong, easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and a perfect fusion between East and West.

MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Shanghai, China is an amazing place to visit in China . If you want to know top 10 what to do in Shanghai or you need a travel guide, please keep watching.

At number 4, we highly recommend a visit to the Nanjing Road: Nanjing Road in Shanghai is a must-visit destination for its vibrant atmosphere and unparalleled shopping experience. As one of the world's busiest shopping streets, it offers a wide array of department stores, boutiques, and luxury brands. Whether you're a shopaholic or simply want to immerse yourself in the bustling city life, Nanjing Road is the place to be for an unforgettable retail adventure.

Now, let's unveil number 3 on our list—the Oriental Pearl Tower: Standing tall in the city's skyline, it offers an observation deck where you can marvel at panoramic vistas of Shanghai's bustling streets, modern architecture, and the winding Huangpu River. The tower's unique design and glass bottom skywalk make it an unforgettable experience for any visitor to Shanghai.

Taking the number 2 spot, we have the Zhujiajiao Water Town: This ancient water town takes you back in time with its well-preserved canals, traditional architecture, and quaint stone bridges. Exploring its narrow alleys, experiencing a gondola ride, and immersing yourself in the tranquil atmosphere offers a unique glimpse into traditional Chinese life and a peaceful escape from the bustling city.

Finally, securing the number 1 spot on our list is the Shanghai Circus World:
The talented performers showcase extraordinary skills, combining breathtaking stunts, Chinese martial arts, and traditional dance. The show captivates audiences with its high-energy performances, intricate choreography, and stunning visuals. It offers a unique cultural experience that will leave you in awe and create lasting memories of your visit to Shanghai.
