Benin ; French: Bénin [benɛ̃]), officially the Republic of Benin (French: République du Bénin) and formerly known as Dahomey, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east. The majority of its population lives on the small southern coastline of the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in the northernmost tropical portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of 114,763 square kilometres (44,310 sq mi) and its population in 2018 was estimated to be approximately 11.49 million Benin is a tropical nation, highly dependent on agriculture, and is a large exporter of palm oil and cotton. Substantial employment and income arise from subsistence farming.
The official language of Benin is French, with several indigenous languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi also being commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun (commonly referred to as Voodoo outside the country) and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel–Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority.
From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were the Kingdom of Dahomey, along with the city-state of Porto-Novo, and a large area with many different nations to the north. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of people who were kidnapped and trafficked to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After slavery was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. The sovereign state has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. The majority of Benin's 11,485,000 inhabitants live in the south of the country. The population is young, with a life expectancy of 62 years. About 42 African ethnic groups live in this country, including the Yoruba in the southeast (migrated from what is now Nigeria in the 12th century); the Dendi in the north-central area (who came from Mali in the 16th century); the Bariba and the Fula in the northeast; the Betammaribe and the Somba in the Atakora Mountains; the Fon in the area around Abomey in the South Central and the Mina, Xueda, and Aja (who came from Togo) on the coast.
Recent migrations have brought other African nationals to Benin that include Nigerians, Togolese, and Malians. The foreign community also includes many Lebanese and Indians involved in trade and commerce. The personnel of the many European embassies and foreign aid missions and of nongovernmental organisations and various missionary groups account for a large part of the 5,500 European population. A small part of the European population consists of Beninese citizens of French ancestry.

Puis c'est le départ pour le #Togo, direction Kétao, pour 2h de voiture. Trajet incroyable avec un passage à la frontière inénarrable !!

Le musée historique d’Abomey est un ensemble de palais royaux dont une partie contient l’un des plus prestigieux musées du Bénin. Le site de 47 hectares dont il fait partie est inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO depuis décembre 1985
Dassa, ville du centre du Bénin, compte 41 collines. De nombreuses balades sont accessibles, toutes plus belles les unes que les autres. On peut se loger à la ferme, et l'endroit est idéal, pour le repos, ...ou la rando !

Cycle Touring - Cape2Cape - Benin
On our incredible bicycle touring adventure through Europe and Africa, we cycled through another beautiful country. We love to cycle in West Africa and learn more about the culture, discover landscapes and meet local people.
On the way to Cape Town, we pedaled through Benin and therefore our 25th country on this bicycle trip. In the north at Boukombé, we entered this country with its rich traditions. The brand-new main road led us over two passes onto a plateau, before we arrived in the city of Natitingou. We discovered the local cuisine of the city, where we even found dog meat! To cool down we visited the Kota-waterfall not far from the city with its refreshing water in the pool and the calm atmosphere.
The formerly tarred road led us more or less directly southwards. Nowadays, it looks more like a rag rug and it is troublesome to ride. At least there was not much traffic and therefore the dust in the air was not that bad. Slowly, the mighty baobabs disappeared and the landscapes got lusher. The landscapes in the south are not that spectacular, just some rock formations at Dassa-Zoumé impressed us for a while, until we continued cycling along the dead straight road.
In a small village, we asked if it was possible to visit their voodoo shrine, since we just entered the main region of this traditional religion. Voodoo has more than 60 million followers and has its origin in West Africa. With the slave trade, voodoo reached the Caribbean.
Before we reached Cotonou, we did a detour to Ouidah where the slave route started from the former slave market and ended at the gate of no return, where the slaves started their horrible journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
In Cotonou, we enjoyed the hospitality of our Couchsurfing hosts and therefore the luxury of our own bed. During the rest days, we organized the Nigerian visa, visited the “Grand Marché du Dantokpa” and watched many movies.
In total, we rode our bicycle more than 600 kilometers in Benin. The next country will be Nigeria. Enjoy our cycling video!
We are Adrian and Fabian from Switzerland and love adventures. In May 2018, we started our Cape to Cape cycling tour from Norway to South Africa. The project name originated from the exact starting point, which was the North Cape in Norway and our destination Cape Town in South Africa.
On the way we will cross two continents, more than 30 countries and master over 30'000 km. To connect the two capes with the bicycle, we plan to cycle for two years.
