10 places you need to see when driving the Pacific Coast Highway

California’s Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most famous, scenic drives in the world. Stretching along a large chunk of the Golden State and hugging the shoreline the bulk of the way, from Malibu southward, makes this road trip one of the most flexible. Nearly anywhere you start, stunning views are guaranteed.

Pull off a quick weekend trip by just hopping through the smaller beach towns near San Diego, or plan the mother of all road trips along Cali’s coast from San Francisco to the southern tip of California and stop at as many cities, parks, overlooks and attractions as you have days for.

Because so many points on this highway are famously fantastic, it can be hard to narrow them down. We’ve picked our top 10 favorite stops along California’s coastline, from top to bottom, to help you plan your way.

[4K] Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point in Orange County California USA - Walking Tour & Travel Guide ????

This scenic part of Dana Point reminds me of Maui, Hawaii. The beachfront hotel, scenic walk path, big waves and turquoise ocean made me feel like I'm in Hawaii. In this walk, I started from Ritz-Carlton Hotel to Salt Creek Beach Park in Dana Point, California.

Salt Creek Beach Park is a beach park located in Dana Point, California. A popular destination for beach-goers, it features amenities such as a half-court basketball court, beach volleyball, and a seven-acre grassy Bluff Park, and offers opportunities for surfing, swimming, and fishing. It is located about 10 miles south of Laguna Beach, 70 miles north of San Diego, and 45 miles south of Los Angeles.

Monarch Beach is about a five-minute walk to Salt Creek Beach. It is a small neighborhood in Orange County, California located within the city of Dana Point. Two luxury resorts, Monarch Beach Resort and the Ritz Carlton-Laguna Niguel, are located within the area. Monarch Beach is close to the city-boundary between Dana Point and Laguna Niguel.

Dana Point History and Activities - Travel Guide

We are going through all the fun activities you can enjoy while visiting Dana Point. Dana Point is a seaside resort area with a surfing heritage and a claim to fame whale watching that is just waiting to be discovered.

1:25 A Brief History
Dana Point’s history dates back to the San Juan Capistrano Mission Days as it was home to a popular port for trade ships exporting hides from the Mission. You can learn all about the San Juan Capistrano, the Birthplace of Orange County in our San Juan Capistrano blog - & YouTube video -
The city of Dana Point was named after Richard Henry Dana, it was a place he referred to as the only romantic spot on the California Coast.
It wasn’t until 1926 when the growth in San Juan Capistrano encouraged more development in Dana Point. This historic part of Dana Point is known as the Lantern District, the name is inspired by the Lanterns that hung from the Sailboats and Tall ships in the port.
Shortly after the expansion of Dana Point began, this new coastal town became a hot spot for tourists, celebrities, and surfers. The beaches were full of campgrounds, picnic areas, bonfire pits, and public facilities making it one of the best vacation spots.

3:45 Surf Culture
Dana Point is known as the birthplace of Surf Culture, a legendary surf spot in the early 1900s because of Killer Dana - a type of wave that broke at the Dana Point headland. It was the only spot on the coast that would hold a 12 to 15-foot swell. Because of this rarity, surfing became a lifestyle in Dana Point. Killer Dana came to an end in the late 1960s with the construction of Dana Point Harbor. To this day surfing plays an important role in the Dana Point community. The best beach for beginner surfers is the Northside of Doheny along the Jetty of Dana Point Harbor. For more advanced surfers, head over to Salt Creek Beach or Strands Beach for some awesome swells.

6:40 Dana Point Harbor
Today the Harbor is the heart of Dana Point as the center of most water & land activities & boutique shopping as well as time-honored, loved by locals restaurants.
On the South end of the Harbor near Doheny Beach, there are rental companies offering SUP and Kayak rentals, + jet skis, surfboards, and parasailing.
Experience a Sunset Harbor Cruise, charter a sailboat or yacht, or head out for an iconic whale watching trip.

12:15 Ocean Institute
The Ocean Institute is a community-based organization that educates the public through over 60 marine science & maritime history programs.
The ocean institute is also home to the Tall Ship Schooner the Spirit of Dana Point. This is a replica of a privateer’s schooner used during the American Revolution known for its speed & was used for smuggling.

14:05 Land Activities
Two Hike Options - Panoramic views at Dana Point Headlands & one the shore to the Dana Point Sea Cave.
You can also rent bikes to cruise around the harbor, through the Lantern District, or for a more adventurous ride, follow the bike path from Doheny Beach and either take it to San Clemente or into San Juan Capistrano.

We hope you enjoyed learning about the history and things to do in Dana Point! Soon we will dive into the foodie scene of Dana Point to share with you the best places to grab a bite and/or a beverage in town.

Dana Point Harbor Seasonal Waterfall

The Dana Point Waterfall is a fun attraction that is only seen after a good rain. Normally, when the rain falls, the locals come out to see a small beautiful waterfall, but in 2017 there was so much rain that it became a gushing site to see. We went on Jan 22 and were blown away by how awesome the experience was. Be sure to check it out next time there is a good rain.
