The city is home to the Château d'Annecy, a castle built between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. You will travel back in time with its medieval quarter and ancient bridges. Annecy is surrounded by several hills and the landscape is magnificent.

Annecy is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. North of the French Alps, after Geneva 40 km to the north, Annecy is part of the axis of the agglomerations of the Alpine furrow in alignment with Chambéry then Grenoble and Valence.
The Pearl of the Alps from Raoul Blanchard's urban monograph forms a contact cluse between the Plaine des Fins and the Pre-Alps constraining its population within its building zone from the 1960s to the municipal merger of 2017. Since the absorption of the territories of Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier, Meythet, Pringy and Seynod, Annecy has risen to 29th place among French cities.2 the most populous with 130,721 inhabitants.
Historic residence of the Counts of Geneva in the thirteenth century, then of the Counts of Savoy in the fifteenth century, the village became the capital of Savoy with the prerogative of Genevois-Nemours including Genevois, Faucigny and Beaufortain from 1434 to 1659. Its religious role intensified in 1536, during the Calvinist Reformation; while the bishop of Geneva took refuge there, François de Sales made it an advanced citadel of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, earning it the nickname Rome of the Alps. The Treaty of Turin led to the annexation of the Duchy of Savoy, attaching the city to the France in 1860 during the reign of Napoleon III.
The nickname Venice of the Alps derives from the canals of Vassé, Saint Dominique and Thiou that protected the city, then brought hydraulic power to textile craftsmanship, gradually giving way to the industrialization of the nineteenth century remaining today through the presence of headquarters, such as Fusalp, SNR, Salomon, Mavic or Entremont.
In the twentieth century, the tourism sector benefits from the renowned purity of the alpine air and the lake, the surrounding winter sports, the conservation of green spaces and a cultural heritage that is being renovated. The touristic-cultural turning point began in 1960 with the organization of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Lake Festival, each attracting a hundred thousand visitors each summer.
In 1973, the Annecy University Institute of Technology was opened, linked to the Savoie University Centre, attached in 1979 to the new University of Savoie, which in 2015 became the Savoie Mont Blanc University, along with those of the Savoie Technolac and Jacob-Bellecombette campuses.
In 2021, Annecy is elected the city of France where we live the best, a ranking established by the association Villes et villages based on 183 criteria3 but is dethroned in 2022 by Angers because of the criteria for access to housing.

The best walk you could do in Annecy during a Raining Day: The Promenade du Thiou
Not a lucky day today in Annecy...a bit of rain that stopped us to go exploring the lake or take our bikes..We tried instead of an easy family walk along the Thiou. The Promenade starts from the city centre and continues for a couple of km along the river. The walk was very pleasant, we were in the middle of nature, easy to walk with kids as well.

Le Thiou est une petite rivière française de 3,5 km de long située en Haute-Savoie. Elle est le déversoir naturel du lac d'Annecy dans le Fier.
C'est une balade citadine à faire autant par les visiteurs que par les Annéciens.
Cette promenade de niveau facile traverse le cœur d'Annecy, le long du célèbre déversoir du lac : le Thiou. Le chemin est plat au milieu des arbres, et agrémentée par de nombreux lavoirs, moulins et oiseaux...
C'est l'Idéale pour une petite promenade en couple, en famille ou entre amis.
1Le « canal du Vassé » dont l'entrée a été édifié pont des amours, celui-ci serpente la vieille ville, avant de rejoindre le bras principal du Thiou juste après le quai de l'Évêché. Historiquement le canal du Vassé a été creusé pour alimenter en eau et énergie les nombreux ateliers disséminés dans la ville
Le palais de l'isle :
Juste après le « port », on peut admirer le palais de l'Isle appelé aussi « vieilles prisons ». Ce monument emblématique d'Annecy, en calcaire et molasse, est originellement une maison forte du xiie siècle. Grâce au Thiou, Annecy est surnommée « la Venise des Alpes ».
Continuons la promenade du Thiou en direction de l’île Saint Joseph
Parc de l'Île Saint-Joseph :
L'environnement naturel de l'île Saint-Joseph fait oublier aujourd'hui le passé industriel de ce lieu. A côté de la manufacture de coton, un ensemble d'ateliers industriels et textiles participait ici à l'essor économique d'Annecy.
Promenade Louis Lachenal :
Écrin de nature en cœur de ville, vous pourrez parcourir les berges du Thiou, et découvrir sur une longueur de 500 mètres entre le pont de la rue de la Gare et l’aval du Pont Neuf, une mise en valeur des essences végétales.
Le Cercle de l’eau : Témoignage de la faune sauvage d’un lointain passé jusqu’à la vie urbaine actuelle, en passant par les artisans du Moyen-Âge et l’histoire de la turbine de Brassilly, il y a 115 ans, profitez du cercle de l’eau.
La Grande Cheminé en brique :
L’imposante cheminée en brique implantée sur le cercle de l’eau témoigne de l’emplacement de l’ancienne usine de tissage de Cran. L’usine a pu produire dans le passé près de 2 500 000 m de tissu par an à son apogée en 1844.
En fin de parcours vous pourrez apercevoir de ce pont le Fier.
