You can start your trip from Victory Square, the city centre.

Thanks to its special geographical location, it has always been culturally influenced by a combination of different civilisations: Latin, Slavic and Germanic.
I loved its timeless atmosphere typical of border regions.
In Gorizia you will breathe the suspended atmosphere typical of a border city: in the Piazza Transalpina, which until 2004 was physically divided by a wall, you will walk with one foot in Italy and one foot in Slovenia. Thanks to its special geographical location, it has always been culturally influenced by a combination of different civilizations: Latin, Slavic and Germanic. Situated on the eastern border, it has always played a major role in Central Europe. Today its streets, architecture and parks are evidence of the important history of this town.
The medieval castle is the heart and symbol of the town. From here, the view sweeps over gentle expanses of hills and all of Gorizia, where medieval, Baroque and 19th century architectures harmoniously co-exist. The Hapsburg bourgeoisie loved to stroll through the streets of the town centre, not surprisingly the town was called the Nice of the Hapsburgs.
Among enchanting parks, such as the Piuma Park on the Isonzo river, the Park of Palazzo Coronini Cronberg (with trees from all over the world) and the Viatori Park, culture is very important too: many museums worth visiting, some of which are peculiar and curious, such as the Province Museums with the Museum of Fashion and of Applied Arts, the First World War Museum and the Archaeological Collection, the Museum of the Middle Ages in Gorizia inside the Castle. Cormòns è un comune italiano di 7.216 abitanti del #Friuli-VeneziaGiulia.
Situata ai piedi del monte Quarin (274 m) a settentrione del Carso goriziano, nella zona pianeggiante del Collio, dista circa 3 chilometri dal confine con la Slovenia, circa 40 chilometri dal capoluogo di regione Trieste, 10 dal capoluogo di provincia Gorizia, circa 25 da Udine e circa 90 da Pordenone.
In epoca romana era una stazione militare, nel 610 i Longobardi la fortificarono. In età alto-medievale fu sede per più di un secolo (610-737) dei patriarchi di Aquileia e, successivamente, venne a lungo contesa in virtù della propria importanza strategica sulla via di accesso a Gorizia.
Nel 980 l'imperatore Ottone II lo infeudò al patriarca Rodoaldo. Nel corso dei secoli XI e XII Cormons fu contesa fra i Patriarchi e i conti di Gorizia, che nel 1277 se ne impadronirono. Dopo una breve occupazione veneziana nel 1308, tornò ai conti di Gorizia. Nel 1497 il conte Leonardo di Gorizia fu costretto da Massimiliano I d'Asburgo a firmare un lascito ereditario a suo favore per evitare la guerra, Cormons come tutta la contea di Gorizia passò quindi alla morte di Leonardo all'Impero Asburgico che, salvo un breve periodo di occupazione da parte della Repubblica di Venezia (1508-1509) e la breve parentesi napoleonica, la mantennero fino alla prima guerra mondiale. Dal 1563 al 1570 vi si tennero incontri politico-militari tra Venezia e l'Impero, che però diedero scarsi risultati.
Il 12 agosto 1866 vi fu firmato l'armistizio tra Italia ed Austria che pose termine alla terza guerra di indipendenza.
Nel 1910 Francesco Giuseppe I d'Austria concesse a Cormons, il titolo di città. Ne riconosceva così l'importante crescita economica, dovuta alla ferrovia Sudbahn che dal 1860 collegava Cormons a Vienna e alla rete ferroviaria italiana e che dal 1866 la stazione divenne dogana del confine tra l'Impero austroungarico e l'Italia.
Nel corso della prima guerra mondiale passò subito in mano agli italiani (25 maggio 1915), poi venne riconquistata dagli austriaci (28 ottobre 1917, XII battaglia dell'Isonzo) per tornare definitivamente all'Italia al termine della prima guerra mondiale; in ogni modo fu in parte danneggiata durante la guerra.

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.
Trieste, as travel writer Jan Morris once opined, 'offers no unforgettable landmark, no universally familiar melody, no unmistakable cuisine', yet it's a city that enchants, its 'prickly grace' inspiring a cult-like roll-call of writers, exiles and misfits.
Tumbling down to the Adriatic from a wild, karstic plateau and almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia, the city is physically isolated from the rest of the Italian peninsula. From as long ago as the 1300s, Trieste has indeed faced east, later becoming a free port under Austrian rule.
The city blossomed under the 18th- and 19th-century Habsburgs; Vienna's seaside salon was also a fluid borderland where Italian, Slavic, Jewish, Germanic and even Greek culture intermingled. Devotees come to think of its glistening belle époque cafes, dark congenial bars and buffets and even its maddening Bora wind as their own; it’s also a great base for striking out into the surrounding Carso and Collio wine country.
Trieste is the capital of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and has 201,261 inhabitants. It is situated on the crossroads of several commercial and cultural flows: German middle Europe to the north, Slavic masses and the Balkans to the east, Italy and then Latin countries to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
Its artistic and cultural heritage is linked to its singular border town location. You can find some old Roman architecture (a small theater near the sea, a nice arch into old city and an interesting Roman museum), Austrian empire architecture across the city centre (similar to stuff you can find in Vienna) and a nice atmosphere of metissage of Mediterranean styles, as Trieste was a very important port during the 18th century.
Trieste has always been a very cosmopolitan city. This can be seen in the cultural diversity and even in religion: there is a Greek Orthodox church, a Serbian Orthodox church, a Lutheran church, and a synagogue. There is a tourist office at the edge of Piazza Unità d'Italia, in the Lloyd Triestino building. Information is available in Italian, German, and English, as are tourist maps and brochures of information about attractions in and around the city.
The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is officially quadrilingual (Italian, Slovene, Friulian or Eastern Ladin and German). Signs are often only italian in Trieste, as the city itself is generally Italian speaking and the local dialect (a form of the Venetian language) is called Triestine. Surrounding villages and towns are often inhabited by mostly Slovene speakers. Residents, and those working in the city, can easily find free courses to learn Italian or Slovene or German or English and many other languages.
Trieste boasts an extensive old town: there are many very narrow and crooked streets with typical medieval houses. Nearly the entire area is closed to traffic. Half of the city was built under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, so there is present a very large number of palaces that resemble Vienna. An iconic place of this quarter is the majestic Piazza Unità (Unity Square), which is Europe's largest sea-front square.

My dearest local friend from Italy, Enrico brought me to the magnificent Medieval walled city called Cittadella close to his place. At one side of city wall, we visited the cool modern restaurant, Herb which had the amazing terrace attached to city wall. Cormons pizza & great beef burger were great enough to confirm the delicacy of Italian cuisine. Thank you for inviting me to such awesome dinner, my friend Enrico!
