State Route 52 Ghost Road and Phantom Bridge # 2, Cedar Grove, Indiana

info@HistoryInYourOwnBackyard.com
812-623-5727

Traveling west on U.S. Route 52 just a half of a mile east of Cedar Grove, Indiana the road takes a gentle turn to the right but looking straight ahead, you’ll notice a gravel driveway. Apparently that gravel driveway is the original road that led into Cedar Grove before U.S. Route 52 was constructed around 1934. Looking over plat maps dating back to 1867, I found the original road went straight before doing a soft zig zag into Cedar Grove proper. Along this section of abandoned roadway is a small one lane concrete phantom bridge about 12 feet long and spanning what appears to be more of a ditch than a creek. The bridge was most likely built around 1910 and from what I can tell hasn’t seen any real automobile traffic since the 1930s outside of a tractor or two.

In the winter months the bridge is easily viewed from State Route 52. For a small town, Cedar Grove has quite a few historic bridges past and present with this one destined to be around for a couple hundred years if not disturbed by man.

Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) / C&O Trail 2023 bikepacking/touring

Join me on the ride to complete the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O trails in part 2 of my Great Lakes to DC tour riding from Buffalo to Pittsburgh to Washington DC. I rode 615 miles over 9 days on this trip, and would love to share the journey with you.

00:00 GAP Day 1 (tour day 5): 78 miles to Connellsville PA
06:02 GAP Day 2 (tour day 6): 64 miles to Meyersdale PA
13:00 GAP Day 3 (tour day 7): 81 miles to Indigo Neck campsite MD
19:30 GAP Day 4 (tour day 8): 95 miles to Calico Rocks campsite MD
24:00 GAP Day 5 (tour day 9): 55 miles to Washington DC

Not much footage from the last day. Tropical Storm Ophelia dumped a lot of rain that day so my main goal was to stay dry. I managed a few shots when the rain let up a bit but otherwise it was a wet slog getting to the train station.

Vincennes, Indiana: All the Hidden Places

Vincennes is a mysterious, beautiful, quiet place, along the Wabash River, that never ceases to amaze me with its feeling of presence. It is clearly, one of my favorite places to go and clear my mind.

But it’s more than just a place to unwind! There’s an ancient Native American burial mound. A city built by the French as part of “New France”. The largest battlefield monument in the United States. Former home of President William Henry Harrison, and 1800’s era buildings. The oldest government building in the United States. The oldest Catholic parish and University in Indiana. The cathedral has an underground crypt that holds the first four bishops of Vincennes. Two world class museums and a beautiful waterfront.

This is Vincennes, Indiana, the historic capitol of the Northwest Territory, a place where you can feel the past, legends, and is one of Indiana’s absolute must see’s!

ADDENDUM: I’ve been informed that a handicap ramp has been installed at the George Rogers Clark Memorial! This allows everyone to enjoy this amazing structure!

Awesome Small Towns in Indiana

Whoops! I forgot to rotate a picture...

My brother, my dad, and I went on a trip to Knightstown, IN on June 2, 2012, and visited several other cool small towns on the way there and back home. These towns include New Castle, Rushville, Connersville, Greenfield, Straughn, Dunreith, Greenfield, and a few others I'm not sure what they were. XD

New Castle was a surprisingly amazing town. It had a Second Empire 1866 courthouse designed by Isaac Hodgson (who designed the original courthouse in Indianapolis that's now gone :( and several other Indiana courthouses that still remain). We also came across a semaphore signal by the train station. One of our favorite discoveries was the Art Moderne-style armory. It was built in 1938, and has been empty for a couple years. THEY'D BETTER KEEP THAT BUILDING UP OR ELSE!!!!

While in Knightstown, we visited the gym where the movie Hoosiers took place. It's still an active gym and it has a few movie props inside. We also got to see the amazing Second Empire Knightstown Academy, and I ended up buying a large can of Empire State Motor Oil for just under $20.

Metamora: The Canal Boat Town, I Used to Know (Metamora, Indiana)

Few places in my life have left such an endearing imprint, as Metamora, Indiana. It’s an 1800’s canal boat town, frozen in time, that is both charming and calming to the soul.

Taking a trip down the waterway, on the Benjamin Franklin III canal boat, was such a soothing memory, and one I’ll never forget. With 19th century buildings, the only wooden aqueduct in America, the oldest water grist mill, and small town shops, the canal makes for a pleasant destination, for the weary traveler, even today.

4K Drone Footage - Metamora, Indiana

Welcome to High Sight Drone POV.

My channel is all about aerial drone videos. I am a Part 107 Commerical FAA Remote Pilot and I will be posting drone footage from various places around the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio area. I will also be traveling with my RV and filming places around the United States. The idea of this channel is to give the viewer a different propective of landscapes from above. I will be using a Mavic Air 2 drone from DJI.

Metamora was platted in 1838. The community derives its name from the play Metamora; or, The Last of the Wampanoags by John Augustus Stone.

The Whitewater Canal only carried boats from 1839 to 1865, but the canal was maintained to supply hydraulic power until 1936. The canal was the center of industrial districts in Metamora and Brookville, 8 miles (13 km) to the east. At one time there were water-powered mills for processing cotton, grinding flour and making paper. Metamora is the location of Indiana's oldest and still operating water-powered grist mill. The state of Indiana provides canal boat rides pulled by horses, through the only existing wooden aqueduct in the United States (the Duck Creek Aqueduct), with a historical review of the canal history which fueled the southeastern Indiana economy until its displacement by the railroad. The canal is named after the nearby Whitewater River. Credit Reference: Wikipedia

The Metamora Historic District and Whitewater Canal Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
