Reflections on My Peace Corps Service: We Are All Americans
In reflecting on my Peace Corps experience, I wanted to try to figure out what was the most important thing that I learned during my time here in Guatemala.
There is a common thing which US Americans are told anytime they tell people from Latin America that they are American: No, eres estadounidense... todos somos Americanos. Roughly translated, this means No, you are from the United States... we are all Americans.
While this is often meant as a tongue-in-cheek way of calling out the hubris of people from the US for calling themselves the only Americans, I think that my Peace Corps service showed me a deeper meaning to that idea.
My time in Guatemala has shown me that despite coming from different cultures and speaking different languages, that the people of Guatemala and Latin America share common values, struggles, heritage, and most importantly a common dreams as people in the United States.
Especially in a time when our government is looking to build literal and metaphorical walls between the US and the rest of Latin America, I think there is no lesson more important that I can share with people back home than the understanding that we are all Americans...
