Places to see in ( Troyes - France ) Cathedrale St Pierre St Paul

Places to see in ( Troyes - France ) Cathedrale St Pierre St Paul

Troyes Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Troyes in Champagne, France. The cathedral is in the Gothic architectural style. It is a national monument and is the seat of the Bishop of Troyes. The site has been used for religious buildings since at least the 4th century, when an oratory stood on the site. A cathedral was built in the 9th century, but was badly damaged by Norman invasions and was replaced in the 10th century, from about 940, when bishop Milo built a Romanesque cathedral. This building was the location of the Council of Troyes that opened on 13 January 1128/29, at which the Order of the Knights Templar was confirmed and its rule established. The Romanesque cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1188.

Construction of the present Gothic cathedral was ordered in about 1200 by bishop Garnier de Traînel and begun under bishop Hervé in 1208. Work continued until the 17th century. The cathedral only has one tower, St. Peter's; St. Paul's tower to the south was never built, and the building is thus still in fact unfinished. A steeple, with a height of 110 metres, once stood over the crossing: it was ruined by a tornado in 1365, and struck by lightning in 1700, after which it was not rebuilt.

The cathedral structure has suffered other natural disasters: part of the choir was destroyed in a hurricane in 1228, and the roof was set alight by lightning in 1389. The earliest part is the 13th century choir. The elaborate façade dates from the beginning of the 16th century. The three main portals are the work of the architect Martin Chambiges. The cathedral escaped destruction during the French Revolution, but was de-Christianised and turned into a Temple of Abundance for several years.

It is particularly noted for its exceptional stained-glass windows of dates from the 13th to the 19th century, with a surface area of 1,500 m², and for the magnificent treasure containing among many other important works the reliquary casket or shrine of Saint Bernard de Clairvaux and his closest friend Saint Malachy of Ireland.

The cathedral, containing the nave, two principal aisles and two further subsidiary aisles, is 114 metres (379 feet 6 inches) long and 50 metres (162 feet 6 inches) wide (across the transepts), with a height from the top of the vault of 29.5 metres (96 feet); the height of the cupola and the tower is 62.34 metres (202 feet 7 inches).

( Troyes - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Troyes . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Troyes - France

Explore the town of Dinant, Belgium

This summer we explored the town of Dinant Belgium – Saxophones, Leffe beer, and the Dinant citadel.

How to get there? It took 2 hrs and 20 minutes from the north of France to Dinant Belgium by car.

Upon arrival, you can see all the structure of the old buildings and some renovated along the river.

The first thing we did was, we took a cruise for sightseeing on the river Meuse. We paid €9 for the adult and €7 for kids 3years and up. Luckily my two sons are free! ????

It took 45 minutes for sightseeing. You will see all the rocks, called Rocher Bayard. There's a legend between the separation of the rock.

Along the river and the center of the city, there's an old Collégiale Notre Dame de Dinant that was built many centuries.

This was only a one day trip with my family and we didn't have a chance to stroll all over the town. But I'm glad I've been in the city where the inventor of saxophone lives before.

That's all for today, see you in my next travel diary!

Hope you like our short tour!

Thanks for watching!

Ciao!

Belgium travel tip : Hill 60 - Ypres - Belgium flanders trip #Belgium

Hill 60 is a World War I battlefield memorial site and park in the Zwarteleen area of Zillebeke south of Ypres, Belgium. It is located about 4.6 kilometres (2.9 mi) from the centre of Ypres and directly on the railway line to Comines. Before World War I the hill was known locally as Côte des Amants (French for Lover's Knoll). The site comprises two areas of raised land separated by the railway line; the northern area was known by soldiers as Hill 60 while the southern part was known as The Caterpillar.

In the collapsed tunnels beneath Hill 60, many British and German dead are buried. The Belgian government made the hill and the surrounding enclosure a battlefield memorial site and to preserve it, far as nature permits, in the state in which it was left after World War I. The park at the memorial site is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). The memorial park also has the remains of several bunkers and craters from the fighting from 1915–1917. A large concrete bunker in the centre of the site is preserved almost as it was found at the end of the war. This bunker was originally German, but modified by the Australians in 1918.

TERGV from Lille-Europe to Calais-Fréthun a very special classified high speed TER train in France

The TERGV is a combination of a TER train and a TGV (inOui) train. It's basically a TGV inOui train, that will serve at the last section of the route as a combined local train & long distance train. I think we can use some more local high-speed trains in France (frequency could go up in general in France for local trains). In this video I tell you about this unique service, show the railway station of Lille Europe, Calais-Fréthun and give more background about this route.

Düsseldorf (often Dusseldorf in English sources; UK: /ˈdʊsəldɔːrf/, US: /ˈdjuːs-/, German: [ˈdʏsl̩dɔʁf] (About this soundlisten); Low Franconian and Ripuarian:[a] Düsseldörp ([ˈdʏsl̩dœɐ̯p]); archaic Dutch: Dusseldorp) is the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state of Germany. It is the second-largest city in the state, after Cologne, and the seventh-largest city in Germany, with a population of 617,280.

It is located at the confluence of two rivers: the Rhine and the Düssel, a small tributary. The -dorf suffix means village in German (English cognate: thorp); its use is unusual for a settlement as large as Düsseldorf. Most of the city lies on the right bank of the Rhine (unlike Cologne, which is on the river's left bank). Düsseldorf lies in the centre of both the Rhine-Ruhr and the Rhineland Metropolitan Region. It neighbours the Cologne Bonn Region to the south and the Ruhr to the north. It is the largest city in the German Low Franconian dialect area (closely related to Dutch).

The Rheinturm (pronounced [ˈʁaɪ̯ntʊʁm]) (Rhine Tower) is a 240.5-metre-high (789 ft) concrete telecommunications tower in Düsseldorf, capital of the federal state (Bundesland) of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Construction commenced in 1979 and finished in 1981. The Rheinturm carries aerials for directional radio, FM and TV transmitters. It stands 174.5 metres high and houses a revolving restaurant and an observation deck at a height of 170 metres. It is the tallest building in Düsseldorf.

The Rheinturm was inaugurated on 1 December 1981.[2] It contains 7,500 cubic metres of concrete and weighs 22,500 tons. Before October 15, 2004, when an aerial antenna for DVB-T was mounted, it was 234.2 metres high.

The observation deck is open to public, daily from 10:00 AM to 11:30 PM. As a special attraction, a light sculpture on its shaft works as a clock. This sculpture was designed by Horst H. Baumann and is called Lichtzeitpegel (light time level). The light sculpture on the Rheinturm is the largest digital clock in the world.
