The Royal Palace of Colorno in the Duchy of Parma
In 1337 Azzo da Correggio built the Fortress of Colorno and the Castle of Guardasone to have two fortifications to the east and west of Parma, to defend the Oltrepò region.
The Fortress of Colorno was renovated in the sixteenth century by the beautiful - as they say - and refined countess Barbara di Sanverino - sung by Torquato Tasso in the sonnet In praise of 'hair of Donna Barbara Sanseverini Countess of Sala. The woman transformed it into her court's palace seat and brought a rich collection of paintings, from Titian to Correggio, from Mantegna to Raphael.
After confiscating the countess's assets by Ranuccio Farnese, in 1612, the palace faced a new renovation and assumed its present appearance.
Following the Treaty of Aachen (1748) that concluded the War of Austrian Succession, the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza passed from Maria Theresa of Hapsburg to the children of Elizabeth Farnese and the King of Spain Philip V of Bourbon. Charles had lived there reluctantly and for a short time from 1731 to 1735. After the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples in 1734, he moved to that city. He brought with him the Farnese's art collections and furnishings in the Capodimonte palace.
After taking over from his brother, Philip settled in the palace with his wife Louise Elizabeth, daughter of the King of France Louis XV. The citizens of Colorno were soon happy to call her with the name the relatives of the Duchess addressed her affectionately.
Babette brought a touch of France to Parma's cuisine as well as to the palace. At the suggestion of the enlightened Guillaume du Tillot, minister of public economy and foreign affairs, she entrusted the renovation of the ducal residence to the architect Ennemond Alexandre Petitot who worked to make the interior of the mansion resemble the Palace of Versailles.
His successor, Ferdinand, preferred to live in a building adjacent to the palace, in an apartment equipped with a library with more than 6000 volumes and an astronomical observatory. A pious man, reactionary, bigoted, introverted, and passionate about astronomy, he rebuilt the court oratory of San Liborio, inverting its layout to make it more accessible to the population. He also built the Dominican convent. Convent and oratory were connected to his private apartment by hidden passages.
After Napoleon annexed the Duchy of Parma to France, the residence was decreed Imperial Palace. However, following the Congress of Vienna, in 1815, it passed to Napoleon's wife Maria Luigia of Austria. She transformed the garden in the English style.
With the unification of Italy, the Savoy family ceded the palace to the State, but not before having transferred everything of value to their various residences around the peninsula: the Quirinale in Rome, Palazzo Pitti in Florence, the Royal Palace of Turin, and the hunting lodge of Stupinigi.
After the purchase in 1870 by the province of Parma, the building assumed the function of a psychiatric hospital. It remained so until 1978 when the Basaglia Law decreed the closure of mental hospitals.
Perfectly preserved is the court church of San Liborio and the Serassi organ, which counts 2898 pipes and is usually played for concerts.
Today the complex is open to the public for guided tours, art exhibitions, and evenings of music and entertainment. In an area of the palace is ALMA, the International School of Italian Cuisine - the most authoritative Italian center of culinary training at the international level - founded by Maestro Gualtiero Marchesi.
The park, developed in 1749 by the gardener of Versailles François Anquetil called Delisle on Petitot's design, was restored by the Province of Parma between 1998 and 2000 on the original Delisle's projects.

It was an independent comune until it was merged in 2014 with Trecasali to form Sissa Trecasali. It is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) northwest of Bologna and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Parma.
Sissa borders the following municipalities: Colorno, Gussola, Martignana di Po, Roccabianca, San Secondo Parmense, Torricella del Pizzo, Torrile, Trecasali. The town is home to a Pork carnival in November, known as the Sapori del Maiale.

Colorno, Italy - Reggia di Colorno and some more
I was driving from Milan to Ancona and stoped in this beautifull place to lunch and took the opportunity to do some sightseeing around the town without any map. Was a pity because only after the journey saw that I must return someday to make a proper visit. The stoppage time for the stay was only 2 houres.

Places to see in ( Parma - Italy ) Palazzo della Pilotta
The Palazzo della Pilotta is a complex of edifices located between Piazzale della Pace and the Lungoparma in the historical centre of Parma, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. Its name derives from the game of pelota played at one time by Spanish soldiers stationed in Parma.
Built around 1583, during the last years of reign of Duke Ottavio Farnese, it developed around the corridor (Corridore) which connected the keep (Rocchetta, traces of which can be seen next the river Parma) to the Ducal Palace: the latter, begun in 1622 under Duke Ranuccio I, was never completed. the façade on the Piazza della Ghiaia is missing and the annexed Dominican church of St. Peter was demolished only in recent times.
The existing complex includes three courts: the Cortile di San Pietro Martire (now best known as Cortile della Pilotta), Cortile del Guazzatoio (originally della pelota) and the Cortile della Racchetta. The Pilotta was to house a large hall, later turned into the Teatro Farnese, the stables and the grooms' residences, the Academy Hall and other rooms.
After the end of the Farnese family rule of Parma, much of the movable assets of the palace were removed by then Duke Charles I, later King of Spain, and taken to Naples in the 1730s. The Biblioteca Palatina was established here by 1769. Elizabeth Farnese, Queen of Spain, was born here in 1692.
By 2015, the building spaces had been taken up by a number of cultural institutions and museums, including in addition to the library:

Parma este al 18-lea oras ca dimensiune din Italia. Am avut ocazia sa stau cateva zile in care m-am plimbat prin oras si prin imprejurimi.
Ca repere pentru orientare, am gasit Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi si Piazza del Duomo. Doua cladiri sunt de remarcat in cea de-a doua piata, anume Batistero di Parma (turnul din marmura roz) si Catedrala di Parma, in care accesul este gratuit si am putut vedea arhitectura si in interior. Strazile din centru sunt cochete, mai inguste si mai putin aglomerate decat in Bologna (vezi:
Am vizitat obiective turistice precum Palazzo della Pilotta, care cuprinde mai multe sectiuni: Muzeul National de Arheologie, Teatrul Farneze (unul dintre putinele teatre din lemn, pastrate pana in zilele noastre), Biblioteca Palatina si Galeria Nationala (de arta)
O veche fortareata in forma de pe vremea lui Napoleon, a fost convertita intr-un parc, care astazi poarta numele de Parco della Citadella. Al doilea parc pe care am reusit sa il vad, se afla pe partea cealalta a raului, care strabate centrul orasului. E vorba de Parco Ducale, unde Palazzo Ducale este acum sediu pentru Carabinieri.
Iesind din oras, la 15km spre sud, un obiectiv turistic pe care merita sa il vizitezi, este castelul Torrechiara sau Torre Chiara. Spre vest, la 10km de oras, sunt baile termale de la Monticelli Terme, unde am petrecut o jumatate de zi la relaxare.
In plan culinar, am vizitat o salumerie/carmangerie unde se pregatesc mai multe sortimente de prosciuto si salamuri tipice zonei. Am avut ocazia sa intru si sa vad procesul tehnologic de obtinere a parmezanului (parmigiano reggiano) intr-o microproductie din afara orasului. Prosciuto si parmezanul sunt principalel ingrediente care se folosesc la pizza si in alte mancaruri.
Cand ti-e foame, o alternativa rapida si decenta ca pret, sunt restaurantele all-you-can-eat, precum Arigato Wok Sushi, la care am avut ocazia sa manac intr-una dintre zile.
Se pot servi cu un vin bun, o bere sau crodino (cea mai buna bautura racoritoare pe care am descoperit-o in Italia). Ca desert, merita sa incerci inghetata de la Gelateria Caraibi, renumita in Parma pentru gustul desavarsit.
