A DIY Day Trip to One of The World's Most Infamous Castles...

Colditz Castle is easily accessible from both Leipzig and Dresden and there's no need to book an official tour. There may not be a direct public transport option, but the indirect ones are easy to figure out and may even open up the chance to explore somewhere else on the same trip. Join my on a Sunday DIY day trip to one of Europe's most famous castles...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Colditz Castle (Schloss Colditz) Tour, Near Leipzig, Germany

A brief history and tour of Colditz Castle in the state of Saxony, Germany. This 16th century castle was notorious as Oflag IV-C, a German prison camp for Allied officer POWs during World War II. Many escape attempts were made, and prisoners sewed and dyed German uniforms to disguise their escapes. Most famous of all was the 2-man glider prisoners built in the attic to attempt to fly off the roof to freedom.

Staying at Colditz Castle, Youth Hostel & Museum - A Great Escape

When you travel there are some places you want to escape from and some you can't. During WWII Colditz Castle was famous as a POW camp that captured officers competed with each other to try and escape from. Today it is part of the German Youth Hostels network, Jugendherbergen in Deutschland and anyone can stay there.

On our recent #castlehostels tour of Youth Hostels in Germany we stopped off at Jugendherberge Schloss Colditz (Colditz Youth Hostel) to stay in the castle and learn more about its history.

In a guided tour of the Castle museum you can learn about the famous 'Escape Academy, see some of the original escape tunnels and view a replica of the glider built in the attic for one of the most audacious escapes ever planned.

It was a great place to stay. To bring it all to life we even watched The Colditz Story movie in the castle, in our hostel room before bed, by which time we had no energy or desire to escape! Check out this video and tell us if you'd like to make a great escape and visit Colditz.

Colditz : Pat Reid's escape

SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :

My visit to Coldtiz castle took place on 7 November 2010, the following week would have been Pat's 100th birthday. This film shows the route of his escape - and is similar to that shown in the fictional Colditz series shown on the BBC from 1972 - 4.
Patrick Robert Reid, MBE, MC (13 November 1910 -- 22 May 1990) was a British Army officer and historical author of non-fiction.
Reid was educated at Clongowes Wood College and Wimbledon College, and graduated from King's College London with a BSc in 1932. He was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps (Supplementary Reserve) in 1935 and promoted Lieutenant in 1938.
A British Prisoner of War, he was held captive at Colditz Castle when it was designated Oflag IV-C. One of the 'Laufen Six', Reid arrived at Colditz in November 1940. Reid was initially the escape officer but he gave this up in order to escape himself on 14 October 1942. He ended the war as a Captain. Reid died on May 22, 1990 aged 79.

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.

Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!

Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Colditz : the terraces

Here we can see the terraces outside Colditz castle - as viewed today from the car park. It was along this route that British Capt. Patrick R. Reid, Canadian Flight Lieutenant Howard D. Wardle (RAF), British Major Ronald B. Littledale and British Lieutenant-Commander William E. Stephens escaped from the camp on 14 October 1942.
This escape was successful with the first pair reaching Switzerland in four days, and the second in five.

Escape from Colditz Castle: The Secret Glider Plan Revealed

Ever heard of the Colditz Cock?

No, it's not some exotic bird species.

It's actually a fascinating story from World War II that highlights the determination and ingenuity of Allied prisoners of war.

So, what was it all about?

Well, picture this: you're an Allied officer held captive in the notorious Colditz Castle, a high-security German prisoner-of-war camp.

Escape seems impossible, but you're not one to give up easily.

You know what I mean?

That's where our heroes, Bill Goldfinch and Jack Best, come into the picture.

These two British officers hatched a plan so daring and innovative that it's still talked about today.

Their mission?

To build a working glider that could be launched from the castle roof and catapult two prisoners over the walls.

Sounds like something straight out of a Hollywood movie, right?

Well, believe it or not, they based their design on a book about aerodynamics they found in the prison library.

Talk about resourceful!

But, as with any good story, there's a twist.

Just when their plan was nearing completion, a piece of news reached the castle and put the entire scheme to rest.

The message?

Halt any and all escape attempts, the Geneva Conventions had been finally abandoned.

And with the British confident that the war was nearing an end, the cost of a failed attempt was just too high.

So, unfortunately, the Colditz Cock never got to spread its wings and soar.

But, as they say, it's the journey that counts, not the destination.

And the story of the Colditz Cock is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the human spirit, even in the darkest of times.

Isn't that something worth remembering?

Escape from Colditz Castle | Fairy Tale. Drama. Adventure. | Schloesserland Sachsen

The escape in a glider or through a 44-m-long tunnel are just two of more than 300 attempted escapes from Colditz Castle. From 1939 to 1945, the castle served as a POW camp for Allied officers. Colditz was regarded to be escape-proof, but its inmates proved the opposite.

Colditz wine cellar and escape tunnel

SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :

The wine cellar in Colditz castle was for German use only and it was just as well they prefered beer. Here we can see the remains of a French escape attempt which involved a tunnel from the clock tower to the wine cellar and from there into the church.

After the outbreak of World War II the castle was converted into a high security prisoner-of-war camp for officers who had become security or escape risks or who were regarded as particularly dangerous. Since the castle is situated on a rocky outcropping above the Mulde river, the Germans believed it to be an ideal site for a high security prison.
The larger outer courtyard, known as the Kommandantur, had only two exits and housed a large German garrison. The prisoners lived in an adjacent courtyard in a 27m tall building. Outside, the flat terraces which surrounded the prisoners' accommodation were constantly watched by armed sentries and surrounded by barbed wire. Although known as Colditz Castle to the locals, its official German designation was Oflag IV-C and it was under Wehrmacht control.
Although it was considered a high security prison, it boasted one of the highest records of successful escape attempts. This could be owing to the general nature of the prisoners that were sent there; most of them had attempted escape previously from other prisons and were transferred to Colditz because the Germans had thought the castle escape-proof.
Captain Patrick R Reid, who successfully escaped from Colditz in 1942, wrote two detailed books about the living conditions and various escape attempts at Colditz from 1940 to 1945: The Colditz Story and The Latter Days at Colditz. In the early 1970s, these were made into a BBC television series starring Robert Wagner and David McCallum.
