COLAC VICTORIA / LAKE COLAC / MEREDITH PARK CAMPING GROUNDS / RED ROCK / FREE CAMPING / VANLIFE

#freecamping #ColacLake #Colac

In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, with our cavoodle, Twyla, to Colac in Victoria, Australia.
We free camped at Meredith Park Camping Grounds for one night. The park had plenty of fire pits so at night you could freely have a drink around the fire. We were hoping to do some camp cooking on the fire but unfortunately it was too cold – so we ended up cooking inside. If you do camp here, you’ll need to bring your own firewood as you will not find much around the area.

In this episode we check out:
•Meredith Park Camping Grounds
•Lake Colac
•Lake Corangamite
•Hulms Bakery Colac
•Red Rock look out
•Lake View Cafe Colac
•Colac Botanic Gardens
•Murray Street Market
•Bulla Murray st ice creamery
•Gellibrand
•Gellibrand River Store and Cafe
•Lake Colac Caravan Park

Meredith Park comprises 6 hectares of Lake Colac shoreline, located 12 kilometres north of Colac. The park has a free campsite, including a picnic area, toilets and fireplaces. This site is also a popular fishing spot, where red fin and carp are commonly caught.

Lake Colac, a freshwater lake of the Western District Lakes, is located north of the Colac town centre in Victoria, Australia. A yacht club and rowing club are located adjacent to the lake's shore. During the summer months, water skiers have access to the lake's facilities, and many birds may be found on the lake's surface and in the area. The foreshore has a playground, boat ramp and the Colac Botanical Gardens.

Red Rock (Volcanic) Lookout
The Red Rock lookout, 12km from Colac, is one of Australia’s youngest volcanoes. Forty separate eruption points have been found, and many of the craters are now full of water. The area is the third largest volcanic plain in the world and estimated to be 8,000 years old. From the lookout, the magnificent 360 degree views include the topography of the volcanic plain and the 25,000 hectare Lake Corangamite.

Lake View Cafe Colac
If your walking near Colac Botanic Gardens, visit this restaurant. Botanic Cafe on the Lake serves Australian cuisine. Enjoy good salads, chicken, steaks, scones and perfectly cooked sticky toffee pudding.

The Colac Botanic Gardens occupy about 16 hectares in an elevated position along the southern banks of Lake Colac.
A 1.1 kilometre carriageway circumnavigates the gardens, providing access to cars, runners, walkers and cyclists. Mature oak trees planted along the perimeter provide shade and weather protection to visitors.

Hulms Bakery Colac has been servicing the Western District of Victoria for over 60 years. They aim to provide the best quality produce and service to their customers on a daily basis and wear their slogan, ‘Best in the West’ with pride.
Their menu includes bacon and eggs, toasted sandwiches, pies, pasties, sausage rolls, vegetarian lines and freshly made sandwiches and rolls. The bakers make traditional old fashion cakes/slices which includes the Napolean Cake, Vanilla/Apple Slice, Matches, Eclairs, Neenish Tarts and many more. There is cappuccino, chai, tea, hot chocolate and a full range of soft drinks and juices.
Hulms Bakery Colac is located opposite the Memorial Square on the main street

Colac’s Murray Street Market is a labyrinth of ecclecticness with over 90 mini-stores to explore all in one vibrant space. Open seven days a week and only a hop, skip and a jump from Lorne, Apollo Bay and The Great Ocean Road there’s plenty of time to scratch the surface and discover this amazing store.

Bulla Murray St Ice Creamery
For over 90 years Bulla has been making award winning ice cream at their factory located on Murray St, in the heart of Colac.
Located in the heart of one of Australia’s best dairy farming regions we combine fresh local milk, cream, free range eggs and six generations of know-how to craft our new range of Murray St flavours.

We hope you enjoy our channel. We often get asked, ‘what is vanlife?’ Van life is a lifestyle of living in a vehicle full or part-time. The names are compound words that derive from the fact that it is typically done in a van that has been modified with basic amenities, such as house batteries, solar panels, a bed platform, some form of the toilet, sink, and storage space.

We enjoy part-time van life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on how to make life on the road easier and fun. Come join us on our adventures! It’s great to see Australian tourism picking up with many people traveling around Australia in caravans, campervans, RVs, and camping in tents. If you enjoy traveling within Australia too, make sure you Like & Subscribe to our channel. Thanks for watching!

Colac a great place to live

Lake Colac

A magnificent place to free camp. Toilets and fire pits and camping on the northern foreshore.

With a surface area of 2,778 hectares and a circumference of 33 kilometers, Lake Colac is the largest natural freshwater lake in Victoria. The lake has an average maximum depth of 2.5 meters, however, in recent years the level has been much lower than this.

The lake is part of the Corangamite basin formed by early volcanic activity, which blocked the natural outflow of Deans Creek and Barongarook Creek.

Lake Colac is a popular location for fishing, water activities, and other recreation along its shoreline. The area surrounding the lake includes the Colac Botanic Gardens, Bird Reserve, Yacht Club, Rowing Club, Fishing Club, and Meredith Park.

Amenities by the southern part of the lake in Colac include parking, barbeques, picnic tables, a playground, and public toilets, all located at the eastern end of the foreshore below the Botanic Gardens.
