COBURG (SYDNEY ROAD) to MELBOURNE CITY CENTRE | Driving Tour Australia

Sydney Road (in its northernmost part also known as the Hume Highway) is a major urban arterial in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Sydney Road starts at the northern end of Royal Parade at the boundary of Parkville and Brunswick and continues north through Brunswick, Coburg, Coburg North, Hadfield, Fawkner, Campbellfield, Somerton and Craigieburn, where it joins the Hume Freeway.[1]

The section passing through Brunswick and Coburg, between Park Street at its southern end and Bell Street near the site of the former Pentridge prison, at its northern end, is Melbourne's longest continuous shopping strip, with an abundance of small businesses and a variety of restaurants and coffee shops, clothing stores, places of worship, and community services. It is well known for its wedding fashion shops, discount shopping and a number of specialist food stores.

Coburg is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 8 km (5.0 mi) north of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Darebin and Moreland local government areas. In the 2021 census, there were 26,185 people in Coburg. 62.1% of people were born in Australia. The next most common countries of birth were Italy 5.7%, Greece 2.8%, Lebanon 2.4%, England 2.2%, and Nepal 1.8%. 58.3% of people spoke only English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Italian 9.1%, Greek 6.3%, Arabic 5.7%, Mandarin 2.0%, and Nepali 1.9%. The most common responses for religion in Coburg were No Religion 36.7%, Catholic 26.7%, and Eastern Orthodox 8.5%.

The cultural diversity of Coburg is reflected in many ways – through its local street and music festivals, variety of cafes, bakeries, restaurants, and grocery shops stocking ingredients from around the world.

The last part of the tour is via Lygon street. Lygon Street is synonymous with the Italian community of Melbourne, forming the nexus point of Little Italy. It is home to many Italian restaurants and alfresco cafés. It is populated by Italian families which migrated here in the 1950s and holds the record of being the first place to install an espresso machine in Australia. It is also considered the birthplace of the 'Aussie' pizza. The area is heavily European in nature and is the home of the yearly Lygon Street Festa, one of Australia's largest outdoor street festivals. The La Mama Theatre and Courthouse Theatre are also in this area, as is the heritage-listed neon sign at Borsari's Corner, named after Italian cyclist Nino Borsari, on the corner of Grattan Street. Toto's Pizza House, the first pizzeria established in Australia, has been located at the southern end of Lygon Street continuously since its opening in 1961.
