Clermont-Ferrand is a university city in central France, bordered by the volcanic Chaîne des Puys mountains. Near the fountains and statues of Place de Jaude square are the Gothic Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral, constructed from lava stone, and the Romanesque Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port, with mosaics. Northwest of the city is the volcano-themed Vulcania amusement park and museum with interactive shows.
Clermont-Ferrand is famous for the chain of extinct volcanoes that ring the city, including the highest, Puy-de-Dôme, some 13 km away from the city centre. One of the oldest cities of France, its first mention was by the Greek geographer Strabo, who called it Nemessos, a Gaulish word for a sacred forest. The settlement witnessed the famous Battle of Gergovia, in which the Gauls led by Vercingetorix triumphed temporarily over the Romans led ultimately by Julius Caesar. After the Roman conquest, the city was renamed Augustonemetum, a name which combined its original Gallic name with that of the Emperor Augustus. Its population was estimated at 15,000–30,000 inhabitants in the 2nd century CE, making it one of the largest cities of Roman Gaul.
Clermont has recently opened a intra-urban tramway providing access to a number of key points in the city. This tram, known as Line A, starts at Champratel and travels southwards through the city center and the University campus before ending at the Pardieu trains station. Trams are frequent. Clermont-Ferrand also has an extensive bus network connecting the downtown to the outlying suburbs. The stations and stops are frequent and the map is not confusing. The buses are limited on Saturdays and Sundays.

Places to see in ( Clermont Ferrand - France ) Puy de Dome
Puy de Dôme is a large lava dome and one of the youngest volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys region of Massif Central in central France. This chain of volcanoes including numerous cinder cones, lava domes, and maars is far from the edge of any tectonic plate. Puy de Dôme is approximately 10 kilometres (6 mi) from Clermont-Ferrand. The Puy-de-Dôme département (with hyphens) is named after the volcano. In pre-Christian Europe, Puy de Dôme served as an assembly place for spiritual ceremonies. Temples were built at the summit, including a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to the God Mercury, the ruins of which were discovered in 1873.
In 1648, Florin Périer, at the urging of Blaise Pascal, proved Evangelista Torricelli's theory that barometric observations were caused by the weight of air by measuring the height of a column of mercury at three elevations on Puy de Dôme. In 1875, a physics laboratory was built at the summit. Since 1956, a TDF (Télédiffusion de France) antenna is also located there. On the top of the mountain, there is a transmitter for FM and TV.
The Puy de Dôme is one of the most visited sites in the Auvergne region, attracting nearly 500,000 visitors a year. The summit offers expansive views of the Chaîne des Puys and Clermont-Ferrand. It is a well-known centre for paragliding. The summit can be reached by two pedestrian path : a southern one (Le sentier des muletiers, formerly a Roman road) and a northern one (Le sentier des chèvres) which runs past the Nid de la Poule crater. The GR 4 long-distance trail includes both paths to cross the mountain.
Since May 2012, visitors can also go up the mountain by train with the Panoramique des Dômes, a rack railway. A road exists along the train tracks but it is closed to the general traffic, except for the military, service vehicles or emergencies. At the top of the mountain, restaurants and shops are available as well as a visitor centre giving information on the history and geology of the area.
In more recent times, Puy de Dôme has served as an occasional stage finish in the Tour de France. It was here that in 1964 Raymond Poulidor battled with Jacques Anquetil in one of the race's most famous moments, racing side by side up almost the entire climb; and that in 1975 Eddy Merckx was punched in the kidney by a spectator. According to Jean-François Pescheux, since the construction of a rack railway, and because of the very narrow road, the Tour will never come back to the Puy de Dôme, its last ascension in the race being in 1988.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port is a Romanesque basilica, formerly a collegiate church, in the Port quarter of Clermont-Ferrand, between Place Delille and the cathedral. From the 10th century to the French Revolution it was served by a community of canons, regular until the 13th century, and thereafter secular. According to tradition, the church was founded by the bishop of Clermont, Saint Avitus, in the 6th century and was rebuilt in the 11th or 12th centuries after being burned down by the Normans. The establishment here of a community of canons took place no earlier than the middle of the 10th century, under bishop Étienne II of Clermont.
The church was formally declared a basilica minor on 3 May 1886.
In the 19th century the bell tower was added, and the Romanesque roof tiles were replaced by lava slabs. These have since been removed again and the roof restored as near as possible to its original state. A major restoration programme took place in the church interior between 2007 and 2008, consisting of the cleaning of all the stonework, the removal of cement pointing from the restoration of the 19th century, the restoration of the pictures and the replacement of the lustres (the crypt however was not included).
On Sunday 7 December 2008 the statue of Notre-Dame du Port (Our Lady of the Port) was reinstalled in the church, having been kept safe in Clermont Cathedral during the restoration works, thus marking the reopening of the building to the public. In 1998 the Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
The name du Port supposedly comes from the fact that the church was built in the port district, in Latin portus, here in the sense of market rather than seaport. It should be noted however that the church at first bore the name of Sainte-Marie-Principale; the description Portus or du Port is not known before the 11th century. Nor was the Port district, at least in the Middle Ages, a particularly commercial one: the districts of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Genès were much more so.
The basilica is one of the five Romanesque churches in Auvergne known as the greater churches (majeures), the others being the church of Saint-Austremoine in Issoire, the Basilica of Notre-Dame of Orcival, the church of Saint-Nectaire, and the church of Saint-Saturnin. Built of arkose, a sort of sandstone, the building has an almost perfect harmony supposedly resulting from the application of the ratio of the Golden Number.
The church is built on a Latin cross ground plan with a nave of six bays between two low side aisles with simple vaults. There is a transept with a semi-circular chapel on each arm, and a quire surrounded by an ambulatory from which open four radiating chapel, none of them on the main axis, thus forming a chevet, which with its fine mosaics is a notable example of the Romanesque art of Auvergne. The capitals, which are among the finest in Auvergne, principally depict scenes from the Bible, but also some from the Psychomachia of Prudentius.

Enthralled when I laid my eyes on Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption.

Jaude Center is one of the main shopping centers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region 1 . It is located in the main square of Clermont-Ferrand , the Place de Jaude from which it takes its name.
Due to its central position in the Puy-de-Dôme department and its commercial offer, the Center Jaude absorbs its clientele throughout Auvergne , over several tens of kilometers around Clermont-Ferrand in a catchment area of over of 500,000 inhabitants.
Served by four bus lines and the tram , the Center Jaude attracts 12 million visitors per year 2 , from five departments.

The Center Jaude 1 is made up of a 22,646 m 2 shopping mall on three floors with eighty shops.
Its extension, the Center Jaude 2 of 13,400 m 2 carried out at the end of 2013, which brings the whole to 37,000 m 2 of surface area, is an integral part of a program which includes housing, offices, a second multiplex cinema of seven halls, a four-star hotel and a 600-space car park on two levels.
It is one of the largest shopping centers in France with 136 stores, including 54 new ones, including many new to the region, including the third Lego Store in France, restaurants and a cinema
History
In 1960, the municipality decided to renovate the so-called fond de Jaude district, to build a shopping center, housing and offices. This district was then considered unhealthy and was particularly depreciated. It was completely razed and construction work on the shopping center began at the end of 1978.
