Crossing the Mojave Desert on Cadiz Road - Ghost Towns, Sand Dunes, & Closed Route 66

More than a century ago, Cadiz Road, a road that cuts through the heart of the Mojave Desert, was part of the main highway between Los Angeles and Phoenix. Once the highways started getting paved however, the road lost out and was bypassed. Once a popular route, the road is now little traveled.

That doesn't mean there is nothing to see however. Over the years, two towns sprung up along Cadiz Road, only to disappear again. But the mark they left is still visible along the road.

The road also travels through the Mojave Trails National Monument and provides access to the Cadiz Dunes, said to be the most pristine and hard to access sand dunes in the Mojave Desert.

Cadiz Road also links California State Route 62 (also known as the most desolate highway in California) and Route 66. Even though Route 66 is one of the best known highways in the world, the section of Route 66 where it intersects with Cadiz Road has been closed for years and very few people get to see it nowadays.

In this video we travel the entire length of Cadiz Road through the Mojave Desert, talk about its history, and and see what there is to see along the way.

Memories in Rust - Exploring the Cloud Museum in Bard, California

The Cloud Museum in Bard, California is a unique experience to say the least. This place has tons of stuff from the early part of the 1900s, from appliances, to garden equipment, bottles, to hundreds of cars. They may even have the largest collection of Ford Model Ts in the world. There is a lot to take in here.

While the museum is only about 10 miles or so north of Winterhaven, California, and about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Yuma, Arizona, it is in a part of California that gets very few visitors making the museum a real hidden gem. Or maybe more appropriately a diamond in the rough?

In this video we explore the museum, its collection of cars, a 1921 motorhome, and take a look at some of the stuff that would have been a common (or maybe even uncommon) sight a century ago.

This place is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Just be prepared to spend more time than you think there, as the amount of stuff here is almost overwhelming.

The Cloud Museum is located at 1398 York Rd, Bard, CA 92283.

Riding E-Bikes On The Amazing Trail System Of Pocatello Idaho

Mountain biking in the Fall. What a way to get into the season. Pedaling through the orange and red foliage, cooler temperatures for the tough climbs. With Idaho’s mountainous terrain and thousands of trails, this state is a real hot spot for people seeking single track. When you think Idaho mountain biking, Sun Valley comes to mind, the Boise foothills, the trails around Payette Lake. But there’s one overlooked city in Southeast Idaho where the biking community has worked their hills for decades, building miles and miles of a self regulating trail system.

Pocatello. Yep, that Pocatello. The city that famously passed an ordinance making it illegal not to smile. In 1948 George Phillips the mayor of Pocatello passed this ordinance because the city’s spirit had been dampened by a particularly harsh winter that year. Pocatello is usually a through town for travelers, but if you have a few days we definitely recommend exploring the trails above the city.
We didn’t have a few days though so we needed a boost. We heard these trails were E bike friendly so we swung by Barries Ski and Sports to pick a few up.

After Barries we headed up to City Creek trail system. It was easy to find, signs are everywhere. But if you need help finding it or want more info about the different trails, Barries or the other bike shops in town can help you out.

Things To Do At Massacre Rocks State Park Idaho

Massacre Rocks State Park. There are tons of places that take hard work and a good sense of direction to find in Idaho. Places that require 4-wheel drive, hiking and backpacks. But sometimes you just want to keep it simple getting to where you’re going. Massacre Rocks State Park is 990 acres right off Interstate 86 in between Twin Falls and Pocatello. At Massacre Rocks State Park you can hang out in a stunning landscape along the Snake River, without having to worry about getting lost in Idaho’s backcountry. Pretty ironic seeing as this area was one of the more difficult parts of the Oregon Trail. Today, motorists fly past Massacre Rocks State Park in air conditioned cars. Not giving any thought to the families in covered wagons who struggled to cross this historic ground in order to settle west.
