Starting from the Mangochi city which is very closed to Lake Malawi and passing areas such as Ulongwe, Balaka, Liwonde, Machinga, Likwenu, Malemia, Domasi, Chilimba, Zomba and then to Blantyre. Malawi 2019: Shire River Cruise
The second day's highlight must surely be the boat trip up the Shire (pronounced: 'sherry') River in the company of a myriad of birds and crocs! Here's just a few of the many species we encountered as we puttered along in our little craft.

The Nyika Plateau lies in northern Malawi, with a small portion in north eastern Zambia.
This Place is almost 550 Km from Lilongwe city, Malawi.
The place is very nice and silent.
We have stayed at Chilinda lodge/camp which is nice place with good felicities.

Malawi.
Aangekomen in MALAWI!
Een land waarvan wij van te voren niet wisten of wij het gingen bezoeken, maar waarvan iedereen aangaf dat wij het niet moesten overslaan. Wij hebben 3 weken over voor wij Zambia in gaan, dus alle tijd om dit kleine landje te ontdekken.
Na een aantal campings in het noorden aan het meer, rijden wij door naar Livingstonia. Onze reisgids geeft het volgende aan over de route:
‘’The road to Livingstonia turns off at Chitimba, forcing its way up the escarpment. This twisting, ulcerated road is a test fort he most steely drivers. An experience of 21 switchbacks and hairpins, with a mainly unpaved surface and with the mountain abysmally close to you.’’
Als dat in de boeken staat, gaan wij natuurlijk deze route nemen! Bekijk het filmpje en zie de lichtelijke teleurstelling als blijkt dat de route (wat ons betreft) ‘easy peasy’ te rijden is. Maar de uitzichten en de camping bovenaan maakt alles goed.
In 1894 is er door de Britse David Livingstone een kerk gebouwd in dit kleine dorpje wat nog steeds in gebruik is. Het was oorspronkelijk de bedoeling dat de kerk beneden bij het meer stond, maar omdat mensen dood bleven gaan aan malaria hebben ze de kerk verhuisd naar 900 meter hoogte op de berg.
Vanaf de 900 meter rijden wij door naar 2300 meter hoogte en slapen een nacht in Nyika National Park.
Dit park is groot en heeft een totaal ander landschap dan dat wij van Afrika gewend zijn. De vele weiden velden met hier en daar rotsige punten geeft ons het gevoel in Frankrijk rond te rijden. Ook de temperatuur is behoorlijk gedaald op deze hoogte.
Wij rijden een route door het park die de laatste tijd alleen door olifanten bezocht is. Dit geeft ons een goede workout en voor Chris de kans om zijn bijl te gebruiken om het pad voor Bonnie vrij te maken.
