The Most Beautiful ENGLISH villages in the COTSWOLDS - Part 1

Some of the most beautiful English villages can be found in the Cotswolds. This guide shows you Englands prettiest villages and historical properties from this beautiful part of England.

Our 2 part guide, starts in Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England a number of times. Hardly changed since the 16 hundreds, this sleepy village is also famous for being the backdrop in a number of films, including Steven Spielberg's War Horse and the 1967 classic Dr Dolittle.

Walking down by the river By Brook, the weaver's cottages are the highlight. Home to the local weavers back in the 15th century, they were highly skilled craftsmen men and women and held high status in the village.
Castle Combe

Bibury is not to be missed on any trip to the Cotswolds. Possibly the most beautiful chocolate box village in the Cotswolds and noted as such by William Morris when he visited. The Arlington Row is the highlight of the visit and again seen in movies like Stardust and Bridget Jones Diary. It can get very busy here so suggest you come early morning or late afternoon when the tour buses have passed.

Bibury

Burford has a sweeping long high street with delightful shops, antiques and tearooms. The 15th-century parish church of St. John Baptist is a magnificently preserved example and should not be missed whilst in the town.

Places to see in ( Chipping Norton - UK )

Chipping Norton is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold Hills in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England, about 12 miles southwest of Banbury and 18 miles northwest of Oxford. The Rollright Stones, a stone circle 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Chipping Norton, is evidence of prehistoric habitation in the area.

The town's name means 'market north town', with Chipping (from Old English cēping) meaning 'market'. Chipping Norton began as a small settlement at the foot of a hill on which stand the motte-and-bailey Chipping Norton Castle. Only the earthworks of the castle remain. The Church of England parish church of St. Mary the Virgin was built on the hill next to the castle. Parts of the present building may date from the 12th century.

Chipping Norton was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. Its neoclassical town hall was built in 1842. Chipping Norton had a workhouse by the 1770s. In 1836 the architect George Wilkinson built a new, larger workhouse.

The Chipping Norton Railway opened in 1855, linking the town with Kingham on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. In 1887 a second railway opened, linking Chipping Norton to the Oxford and Rugby Railway at King's Sutton, and the CNR became part of the resulting Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. Extending the railway from Chipping Norton involved digging a tunnel 685 yards (626 m) long under Elmsfield Farm west of town.

Until 1962 Chipping Norton railway station served the town. Now the nearest stations are at Kingham and Ascott-under-Wychwood. A group of media, political and show-business acquaintances, some of whom have homes near Chipping Norton, including former Prime Minister David Cameron, is referred to in the media as the Chipping Norton set.

( Chipping Norton - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Chipping Norton . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Chipping Norton - UK

CHIPPING CAMPDEN | The best Cotswolds Villages and Towns

Walk with me through Chipping Campden as I continue to visit the best Cotswolds Villages and Towns. Chipping Campden is one of the prettiest towns in The Cotswolds and I'll walk you along the famous high street and show you all the landmarks and tourist attractions like the tudor Market Hall, the Almshouses, this historic eight bells inn and lots more!

Welcome to this Gimbal Walk TV tour of the best Cotswolds Villages and Towns and today we visit the picturesque and very pretty Chipping Campden. This market town used to be a centre of trade for wool and throughout the High Street and beyond are the results of the wealth that brought to this beautiful Cotswolds Town.

You can't visit The Cotswolds without visiting Chipping Campden for a day trip or a walk around the town. Marvel at the beautiful high street, the medieval buildings, the historic inns and pubs, and the cute little shops that makes shopping in Chipping Campden a delight.

Stop off in one of the lovely little tea rooms for afternoon tea in the sunshine, pop into the art and antiques shops and find the little yards and lanes off High Street and explore them to your hearts content.

Our Chipping Campden tour begins on Church Street at St James Church, right next door to the entrance to East Banqueting House and West Banqueting House, a landmark trust site.

Also here is the Court Barn Museum which is well worth a visit and a look around to learn the Chipping Campden history before stepping back out onto Church Street to admire the almshouses which are one of the most visited Cotswolds Tourist Attractions.

We head up onto Chipping Campden High Street which is a beautiful street just flooded with history and medieval homes and buildings. One of these is Grevel House, thought to be the original home of the famous 14th century wool merchant William Grevel.

The star of the show is Chipping Campden Market Hall, one of the most photographed landmarks and visitor attractions in the whole of the Cotswolds. This magnificent market hall is just beautiful and is often found to be busy with tourists taking photos, or wandering round for a look.

Also on high street is the Lygon Arms. The Lygon Arms is the oldest Coaching Inn in Chipping Campden with trading records dating back to the 16th Century. Originally called the White Hart derived from Richard II's heraldic symbol. The name was changed to The George during the reign of James I (1603-1625). The Inn is proud to continue providing traditional country style 4-star accommodation.

Further along High Street is Woolmarket House bed and breakfast. Parts of the building date back over 300 years and the property has rich history of serving the local community and welcoming visitors having formally been a Lyons Tea Room, grocers and antique shop.

As you can see lots of Cotswolds Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts and Inns if you're looking to stay in the Cotswolds and in particular in Chipping Campden!

A quick stroll around Chipping Norton - a Cotswold Town (June 2021)

Linda and I tried to visit Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop..... but there was a 0.7 mile traffic jam. We ended up in Chipping Norton and had a nice coffee in Caffe Nero !!

Chipping Norton is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold Hills in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England, about 12 miles (19 km) south-west of Banbury and 18 miles (29 km) north-west of Oxford. The 2011 Census recorded the civil parish population as 5,719. It was then estimated at 6,254 in 2019.

Recording studio

The former British Schools building at 28–30 New Street, subsequently Chipping Norton Recording Studios
Between 1972 and 1999 the former British Schools building in New Street was Chipping Norton Recording Studios. Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, In The Army Now by Status Quo, Too Shy by Kajagoogoo, I Should Have Known Better by Jim Diamond, Perfect by Fairground Attraction, I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight by Cutting Crew and Bye Bye Baby by the Bay City Rollers were all recorded here. Jeff Beck, Barbara Dickson, Duran Duran, Marianne Faithfull, Alison Moyet, Nektar, Radiohead, The Supernaturals, Wet Wet Wet, XTC, Mark Owen and Chris Rea were also clients.

Post-1800

In 1796 James and William Hitchman founded Hitchman's Brewery in West Street. In 1849 the business built a larger brewery in Albion Street that included a malthouse and its own water wells. Three generations of Hitchmans ran the brewery, but in 1890 Alfred Hitchman sold the business as a limited company. The new company grew by buying other breweries in 1891 and 1917. In 1924 it merged with Hunt Edmunds of Banbury and in 1931 Hunt Edmunds Hitchmans closed the brewery here.

Other industries in the town included a woollen mill (see below), a glove-making factory, a tannery and an iron foundry.

Chipping Norton had a workhouse by the 1770s. In 1836 the architect George Wilkinson built a new, larger workhouse. It had four wings radiating from an octagonal central building, similar to Witney workhouse, which Wilkinson was also building. The architect G. E. Street added a chapel to Chipping Norton workhouse in 1856–57. It ceased to be a workhouse in 1929 and became a hospital in the Second World War. The National Health Service took it over in 1948, making it Cotshill Hospital, which later served as a psychiatric hospital. The hospital closed in 1983, and has since been redeveloped as private residences.

Chipping Norton Town Hall, built in 1842
Chipping Norton was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. Its neoclassical town hall was built in 1842.

Holy Trinity Roman Catholic church is also neoclassical. It was built in 1836 by the architect John Adey Repton, a grandson of the English garden designer Humphry Repton.

Chipping Norton railway station, opened in 1855, pictured here in the early 1900s
The Chipping Norton Railway opened in 1855, linking the town with Kingham on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. In 1887 a second railway opened, linking Chipping Norton to the Oxford and Rugby Railway at King's Sutton, and the CNR became part of the resulting Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway (B&CDR). Extending the railway from Chipping Norton involved digging a tunnel 685 yards (626 m) long under Elmsfield Farm west of town.

In 1951 British Railways withdrew passenger services between Chipping Norton and Banbury. In 1962 BR closed Chipping Norton railway station and withdrew passenger services between Chipping Norton and Kingham. In 1964 BR closed the B&CDR to freight and dismantled the line. The disused railway tunnel is bricked up at both ends for safety and as a refuge for bats. (See Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981)

Bliss Mill, built in 1872
In May 1873 rioting took place following the conviction and sentencing of the Ascott Martyrs, 16 local women accused of trying to interfere with strikebreakers at a farm.

Bliss Tweed Mill, on the west of town, was built as a tweed mill by William Bliss in 1872. In 1913 to 1914 the millworkers struck for eight months. The mill closed in 1980 and has been converted into flats. It remains a landmark, visible from Worcester Road.

The town lost its status as a municipal borough in 1974, when the Local Government Act 1972 made it a successor parish within the district of West Oxfordshire.

Places to see in ( Stow on the Wold - UK )

Places to see in ( Stow on the Wold - UK )

Stow-on-the-Wold is a small market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. Stow on the Wold is situated on top of an 800 ft hill, at the convergence of a number of major roads through the Cotswolds, including the Fosse Way.

Stow on the Wold was founded as a planned market place by Norman lords to take advantage of trade on the converging roads. Fairs have been held by royal charter since 1330 and an annual horse fair is still held on the edge of the town of Stow on the Wold .

Stow-on-the-Wold was prominently featured in the eleventh episode of series 6 of Top Gear, when Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Ford F-Series there. He chose to film it there because it's a typical village in the English countryside. Several roads link Stow to the surrounding villages. The Fosse Way (A429), which runs from Exeter to Lincoln; the A424, which runs from Burford, into the A44 and into Evesham; and the A436, which connects Cheltenham and Gloucester with Stow.

From 1881 until 1962, Stow was served by Stow-on-the-Wold railway station which was on the Great Western Railway's Banbury and Cheltenham Direct Railway. The nearest railway station is now Moreton-in-Marsh (approximately 4 miles from Stow). This station is on the Cotswold Line from Hereford to London Paddington. An alternative is Kingham railway station (approximately 5 miles from Stow) on the same line.

( Stow on the Wold - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Stow on the Wold . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Stow on the Wold - UK

Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh, Cotswolds, UK

NOTE: This video was filmed before the second and third UK lockdowns.

As you have seen in my previous videos, there’s no doubt that the Cotswolds deserves its designation as an area of outstanding natural beauty. In this video, are the last two places I have visited.

Chipping Campden is a small market town in Gloucestershire and it is one of the most visited towns in the Cotswolds. Like other villages in the Cotswolds, this market town was a rich wool trading center in the Middle Ages and benefited from local rich wool merchants.

Moreton-in-Marsh is small market town situated on the Fosse Way. It has a long and wide High Street to accommodate trades and markets during the middle age and lies on common land bordering the Fosse Way, to the northwest of the original Saxon settlement. It grew up until the thirteenth century as a market town and there is still a busy Tuesday market with about 200 stalls attracting residents and visitors. The town has welcomed travellers for at least 1700 years and was used as a coaching station until the arrival of the Oxford to Worcester railway in 1853. There are several pubs, inns, hotels, tea shops, restaurants and holiday cottages.

I hope that this series of videos showcased that the Cotswolds is indeed an area of outstanding natural beauty with lots of picturesque and historic towns. The area is well-worth visiting when in England.

CHIPPING CAMPDEN, CHARMING VILLAGE IN THE COTSWOLDS (4K)

Chipping Campden is one of several quaint villages in the Cotswolds in England. It started out as a market town (Chipping means market) in the 12th century and was built up by revenue from the wool industry. Many of the buildings you see are several hundred years old: We visit High Street which features many of the main buildings, including Town Hall, Market Hall, the Malt House, and the Grevel House, where we speak to Sam, a local who gives us some insights into Chipping Campden. We also see St. Catherine's Church and St. James' Church and cemetery, whose churchyard has graves going back to the late 17th century. There's a lot of rich history and architecture in Chipping Campden, and I'm really glad we got to stay there.
