Chillicothe, is a quaint and historical city on the Scioto River in Ross County, Ohio. It was the First and Third Capital of the Territory. A major player in the Capital Shuffle, it lost to Zanesville for 2 years, got it back, then lost it for good to Columbus. Tucked into Northern Missouri’s lush, rolling hills sits a slice of times gone by. The wonderful main street in downtown Chillicothe is great to walk around. The beautiful turn-of-the-century buildings are lovingly restored and maintained. Known as the Home of Sliced Bread, Chillicothe has managed to maintain its small town heritage and storied locations while offering modern amenities and a budding food scene.
Not to be missed are the 25 murals on the sides and fronts of many buildings. Many of these murals take up an entire wall!
Yes, Chillicothe is the Home of Sliced Bread! Invented by Iowa inventor, Otto Rohwedder, the bread slicer was put into practice in 1928 in beautiful downtown Chillicothe. A product of the Chillicothe Baking Company, it was sliced on a machine called the Rohwedder Bread Slicer. The massive unit, approximately five feet long and three feet high, was a bread slicing machine. And, nowhere in the world were bakers selling sliced loaves of bread. But, a Chillicothe baker, who was on the verge of bankruptcy, took a chance on the invention and on July 7, 1928, put the first loaves of sliced bread ever made on the shelves of Chillicothe grocery stores. From that moment on, sliced bread became a part of history–a history that began right here, in Chillicothe.

Driving through Chillicothe, Missouri for the first time. A short drive around the old town square courthouse. Its a nice old small town with beautiful old buildings. It is the county seat of Livingston County Missouri.
After arriving home from my trip and reading some information about Chillicothe, I found that it is the home of sliced bread! Otto Rohwedder sold the first sliced bread in small town Chillicothe in the year 1928! My first time driving around the Home of Sliced Bread!
