Thillai Natarajah Temple, Chidambaram or Chidambaram temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the town of Chidambaram, East-Central Tamil Nadu, South India. The temple is known as the foremost of all temples (Kovil) to Saivites and has influenced worship, architecture, sculpture and performance art for over two millennium. The Sangam classics list chief architect Viduvelvidugu Perumtaccan as directing an early renovation of the shrine.
In Kanda Puranam, the epic authored by Kachiyappa Sivachariar of Kanchipuram, the Chidambaram shrine is venerated as one of the three foremost Shiva abodes in the world, alongside Koneswaram temple of Trincomalee and Mount Kailash,Etc
Chidambaram is one of the five Pancha Bootha Sthalams, the holiest Shiva temples each representing one of the five classical elements; Chidambaram represents akasha (aether). Chidambaram is glorified in Tirumular's Tirumandhiram and was visited by Patañjali and Pulikaal Munivar.[8] It is the primary shrine of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar saints Tirunavukkarasar, Thirugnana Sambandar and Sundarar. Hailed in the Tiruvacakam series by Manikkavacakar, these very volumes of the Tirumurai literature canon were themselves found in secret chambers of the temple. The Periya Puranam, a biography of these Nayanar saints by Sekkizhar commissioned by emperor Kulothunga Chola II, was written in the shrine's Thousand Pillared Hall. In Kanda Puranam, the epic authored by Kachiyappa Sivachariar of Kanchipuram, the Chidambaram shrine is venerated as one of the three foremost Shiva abodes in the world, alongside Koneswaram temple of Trincomalee and Mount Kailash.

Cuddalore is a famous Shiva temple here. Sri Paataleeswarar is the presiding Deity with Brahannayaki Amman. This is an ancient and beautiful temple. Five kilometres from the main busstand is the town Thiruvahindrapuram where the famous Vaishnavite temple of Sri Devanathan is situated. Hayagrivar Sannadhi located in small Hillock nearby this temple is well-known. Thiruvahindrapuram is one of the famous 108 Vaishnavite temples in India. There is also a temple for Veera Anjaneyar very near the bus stand.
You can buy good variety of Clay dolls for Navarathri from nearby place Vandipalayam (about 2 km). Also, there is a town called Panruti, 21 km from here, which is famous for its Palaa Pazham (Jack fruit), Cashew nuts, and ground nuts. On the way from Cuddalore to Panruti you can find a place called Thiruvathigai where a famous Shiva temple is located. There is a famous farm in Palur near Panruti where you can get all kinds of plants. Agriculture research is also being carried out in Palur farm. Panruti dolls are also famous. The name Arcot is derived from the Tamil word “Aaru kadu” which means six forests, the abode of six Rishis. This District was called Thondai Nadu in olden days. It has a specialty “Saandror Udaithu”, which means that great and elite personalities lived in this land. The history of the past shows that the Cuddalore district held a proud position during the rule of Cholas, Pallavas and Pandyas. Cuddalore traded with the Roman Empire approximately 2000 years ago. Archaeological evidence of these ancient trade relationships can be found in the Cuddalore Government Museum in Manjakuppam. This District is the birthplace of Vallalar Ramalingaswami Adigal, Chief Shaivist Appar Saint and ragavendra Swamigal. The famous temple of Lord Nataraja is situated in this district and is regarded as one of the speciality of this district.
The Dutch were the first to conquer Cuddalore, followed by Portugal, France and later Britain. The British bought Fort Saint David in Cuddalore near Devanampattinam from the Gingee Rulers. In 1674, the district came under the control of the British. Cuddalore was the Capital of the English possession on the Coromandal Coast from 1748 to 1752.
Cuddalore district is at the tail end of the Cauvery delta region. Parts of the district get water from the irrigation canals that bring water from Mettur dam. Ground water from Neyveli mines also provides irrigation coverage to crops. According to a rough estimate, 60% of the farms are dependent solely on rainfall and the rest have access to irrigation/ground water pumps. In Cuddalore district, 592 tanks, 270 canals and one major reservoir serve as the main source for irrigation. Wellington reservoir is the major reservoir in Thittagudi Taluk and Veeranam tank is the major irrigation source in Chidambaram and Kattumannar Koil Taluks. In Cuddalore taluk, Perumal Lake is the major surface irrigation source. Generally, for Agriculture purpose maximum amount of available water resource are utilized though minor irrigation schemes. The surface flow in the rivers can be observed only during monsoon periods. The deficient monsoon rainfall has affected the flow of surface water into reservoirs, anaicuts, lakes etc. Hence under these circumstances the agriculturists have to totally depend upon an alternative source

Chidambaram is a town and municipality in Cuddalore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of the Chidambaram taluk.
The town is known for the Thillai Nataraja Temple, and the annual chariot festival held in the months of December–January (In the Tamil month of Marghazhi known as Margazhi Urchavam) and June to July (In the Tamil month of Aani known as Aani Thirumanjanam)
