Die historische Hafenstadt Cherbourg ist heute ein Ortsteil und die Kernstadt von Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. Sie war bis 2000 eine selbständige Gemeinde im Département Manche in der Region Normandie im Norden Frankreichs. Die Hafenstadt hat einen Seehafen mit einer Flottenbasis der französischen Marine und einem nennenswerten Yachthafen. Die an der Nordküste der Halbinsel Cotentin direkt am Ärmelkanal gelegene Stadt ist Sitz einer Unterpräfektur. Im Jahr 2000 fusionierte die Stadt Cherbourg mit der Nachbargemeinde Octeville und trug seither den Doppelnamen Cherbourg-Octeville. Mit dem Jahresbeginn 2016 kam es zur weiteren Fusion von Cherbourg-Octeville mit Équeurdreville-Hainneville, La Glacerie, Querqueville und Tourlaville, und so heißt die gesamte Gemeinde heute Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
Cherbourg ist einer der facettenreichsten Häfen der Normandie. Die spannende Geschichte der zweitgrößten Reede der Welt oder das Tiefsee-Museum Cité de la Mer mit dem größten begehbaren U-Boot der Welt sind wie gemacht für den Urlaub mit Kindern oder auch mit Hund in der Normandie. Cherbourg liegt an der Spitze der wilden Halbinsel Cotentin, wobei der Golfstrom für ein mildes Klima sorgt.
Sehenswürdigkeiten:
Der Hafen: Hier legen prächtige Segelschiffe und die größten Kreuzfahrtschiffe unserer Meere an. Der Hafen ist Ausgangspunkt vieler maritimer Veranstaltungen, wie zum Beispiel die Einhandregatta des Figaro vor der Atlantikküste Frankreichs.
Das Cité de la Mer, großes Tiefsee-Museum: Es liegt direkt am Hafen, in dem ehemaligen Auswanderer-Hafenbahnhof im Art déco-Stil. Neben den spannenden Auswanderergeschichten besichtigen Sie hier das größte U-Boot der Welt mit deutschsprachigen Audioguides. Die 2019 neu eröffnete Ausstellung „Ozean der Zukunft“ zeigt die Wunder unserer Meere und wie wir sie schützen können. Im Cité de la Mer bestaunen Sie und Ihre Kinder außerdem das mit 11 Metern tiefste Aquarium Europas. Wussten Sie, dass die Titanic in Cherbourg anlegte, bevor sie ihre schicksalhafte Reise nach New York unternahm? In der Titanic-Ausstellung des Tiefseemuseums erfahren Sie mehr dazu.
