Chartres, a city in north-central France southwest of Paris, is famed for its massive Cathédrale Notre-Dame.
The Gothic cathedral, completed in 1220, features 2 towering spires, flying buttresses, Romanesque sculptures, pavement labyrinth, and elaborate rose windows. The interior's blue-tinted stained glass is distinctive, and the nearby Centre International du Vitrail has workshops and exhibits on stained-glass art.

Places to see in ( Chartres - France ) Eglise St Aignan
The Saint-Aignan church is named after the Bishop of Orleans at 400 , when amounted already a pre-Romanesque church, later replaced by other buildings that suffered fire in xii th century and in 1262 . Saint-Aignan was the parish of the Counts of Blois and Chartres.
The tradition because of the high church of the v th century by Aignan Orleans , which nothing remains, the burial place of the saint. Tucked between the castle today disappeared from the counts of Chartres and the wall rebuilt in the ix th century , it became the Late Middle Ages the first parish church of the city and the oldest remains.
It was rebuilt in the xiv th century in Gothic style , as evidenced by the main gate, only vestige of that era. The modesty of it is related to the narrowness of the network of alleys of then. The terrace that opens to the south covers the old cemetery. The bedside is then extended on the top of the rampart, which has no more use.
The crypt, well lit by windows that open onto St. Peter street below, when the end of the xv th century but the present building dates from the early xvi th century . At the last flamboyant exercises (profiles of the pillars, decorations of tympanums) are imposed the columns in the antique typical of the Renaissance . The small portal of the north aisle bears the date of 1541 . The architect may be the same as that of the Sainte - Foy church , partially destroyed during the Revolution . His vault project for the nave , whose columns were to bear thewarheads , was canceled.
The turret left dated xvi th and xvii th centuries . It is connected to the main building by a buttress arch bearing a staircase that dates from the project of 1541. The abutments planned for the other bow-props remain on the exterior facades unemployed. The gallery of the second floor is not elevated until 1625 , under Louis XIII . We are satisfied with a wooden shingle to cover the nave and a triforium for the aisles .
Nationalized during the Revolution , the church is generously converted into a military hospital . It escapes the insults of the Terror by being made prison and is resold against some assignats to a contractor, who uses it as a fodder store, which saves it from a slaughter. The Restoration makes it to worship in 1822 . In 1869 , interior painting, polychrome frescoes in the romantic style, was entrusted to a collaborator of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc , Émile Boeswillwald .

Chartres Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, is a Gothic Catholic cathedral of the Latin Church located in Chartres, France, about 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Paris.
The current cathedral, mostly constructed between 1194 and 1220, is the last of at least five which have occupied the site since the town became a bishopric in the 4th century.
It is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which calls it the high point of French Gothic art and a masterpiece.
As with any medieval bishopric, Chartres Cathedral was the most important building in the town – the centre of its economy, its most famous landmark and the focal point of many activities that in modern towns are provided for by specialised civic buildings.
In the Middle Ages, the cathedral functioned as a kind of marketplace, with different commercial activities centred on the different portals, particularly during the regular fairs.
Textiles were sold around the north transept, while meat, vegetable and fuel sellers congregated around the south porch.
Money-changers had their benches, or banques, near the west portals and also in the nave itself.
Wine sellers plied their trade in the nave, although occasional 13th-century ordinances survive which record their being temporarily banished to the crypt to minimise disturbances.
Workers of various professions gathered in particular locations around the cathedral awaiting offers of work.
The cathedral has been well preserved.
The majority of the original stained glass windows survive intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century.
The building's exterior is dominated by heavy flying buttresses which allowed the architects to increase the window size significantly, while the west end is dominated by two contrasting spires – a 105-metre (349 ft) plain pyramid completed around 1160 and a 113-metre (377 ft) early 16th-century Flamboyant spire on top of an older tower.
Equally notable are the three great façades, each adorned with hundreds of sculpted figures illustrating key theological themes and narratives.
Since at least the 12th century the cathedral has been an important destination for travellers – and remains so to the present, attracting large numbers of Christian pilgrims, many of whom come to venerate its famous relic, the Sancta Camisa, said to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary at Christ's birth, as well as large numbers of secular tourists who come to admire the cathedral's architecture and historical merit.

Chartres France 2022 - Walking Tour 4K
Chartres, a city in north-central France southwest of Paris, is famed for its massive Cathédrale Notre-Dame. The Gothic cathedral, completed in 1220, features 2 towering spires, flying buttresses, Romanesque sculptures, pavement labyrinth and elaborate rose windows. The interior's blue-tinted stained glass is distinctive, and the nearby Centre International du Vitrail has workshops and exhibits on stained-glass art.

A Walk Around The Town of Chartres, France
Chartres is a commune and capital of the Eure-et-Loir department in France. It is located about 90 km (56 mi) southwest of Paris. Chartres is famous world-wide for its cathedral. Mostly constructed between 1193 and 1250, this Gothic cathedral is in an exceptional state of preservation. The majority of the original stained glass windows survive intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century. Much of the old town, including the library associated with the School of Chartres, was destroyed by bombs in 1944.
In the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War, Chartres was seized by the Germans on 2 October 1870, and continued during the rest of the war to be an important centre of operations.
In World War II, the city suffered heavy damage by bombing and during the battle of Chartres in August 1944, but its cathedral was spared by an American Army officer who challenged the order to destroy it. On 16 August 1944, Colonel Welborn Barton Griffith, Jr. questioned the necessity of destroying the cathedral and volunteered to go behind enemy lines to find out whether the Germans were using it as an observation post. With his driver, Griffith proceeded to the cathedral and, after searching it all the way up its bell tower, confirmed to Headquarters that it was empty of Germans. The order to destroy the cathedral was withdrawn.
Colonel Griffith was killed in action later on that day in the town of Lèves, 3.5 kilometres (2.2 miles) north of Chartres. For his heroic action both at Chartres and Lèves, Colonel Griffith received, posthumously, several decorations awarded by the President of the United States and the U.S. Military, and also from the French government.
Chartres is built on a hill on the left bank of the Eure River. Its renowned medieval cathedral is at the top of the hill, and its two spires are visible from miles away across the flat surrounding lands. To the southeast stretches the fertile plain of Beauce, the granary of France, of which the town is the commercial centre.
