Paris Vacation Travel Guide | The Best Of Paris, France

PARIS! City of lights, city of love, and one of the most visited cities in the world.

Paris is a city with a proud and very ancient history. Originally founded in the third century BC, on an island in the middle of the Seine, it was the capital city of a tribe known as the Parisii, who gave it their name. In Roman times, the city expanded beyond the islands in the Seine and became known as Lutetia. During the decline of the Roman Empire, northern France was overrun by a Germanic tribe called the Franks, whose new kingdom - part of the Holy Roman Empire - became known as West Francia, with its capital at Paris. In the early Middle Ages, West Francia became France, and Paris grew in importance as a European city. By the 12th century, when the Notre Dame cathedral was built on the largest of the islands in the Seine, Paris was the capital of one of the most powerful kingdoms in Europe, and its importance as an international city has never waned.

Many of the great buildings of Paris, such as the Louvre and the Panthéon, date from the 17th and 18th centuries when royal power in France was at its peak. Yet the shape of modern Paris was largely determined in the mid 19th century, when a radical city-planner, Baron Haussmann, was given the job of opening up the old city with its narrow twisting streets. Haussmann designed a city crisscrossed by broad tree-lined boulevards, flanked by spacious apartment buildings – which is essentially the Paris we know today.

The Eiffel Tower was added for the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
Though the city walls are long gone, central Paris is now known as Paris intra-muros, or Paris within the walls, which is the area with almost all the main tourist attractions. Where there once stood city walls, there is now the boulevard périphérique or inner ring road, clearly visible on the map. Beyond that, the modern city of Paris extends in all directions. On this and other pages, discover the About-France.com visitor guide to Paris, providing you with all you need to know when planning a trip to this magnificent city.

Monuments and attractions
The city's top cultural attraction in 2019 was the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur (11 million visitors), followed by the Louvre (9.6 million visitors); the Eiffel Tower (6.1 million visitors); the Centre Pompidou (3.5 million visitors); and the Musée d'Orsay (3.3 million visitors).

The centre of Paris contains the most visited monuments in the city, including the Notre Dame Cathedral (now closed for restoration) and the Louvre as well as the Sainte-Chapelle; Les Invalides, where the tomb of Napoleon is located, and the Eiffel Tower are located on the Left Bank south-west of the centre. The Panthéon and the Catacombs of Paris are also located on the Left Bank of the Seine. The banks of the Seine from the Pont de Sully to the Pont d'Iéna have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991

Other landmarks are laid out east to west along the historical axis of Paris, which runs from the Louvre through the Tuileries Garden, the Luxor Column in the Place de la Concorde, and the Arc de Triomphe, to the Grande Arche of La Défense.

Several other much-visited landmarks are located in the suburbs of the city; the Basilica of St Denis, in Seine-Saint-Denis, is the birthplace of the Gothic style of architecture and the royal necropolis of French kings and queens. The Paris region hosts three other UNESCO Heritage sites: the Palace of Versailles in the west, the Palace of Fontainebleau in the south, and the medieval fairs site of Provins in the east. In the Paris region, Disneyland Paris, in Marne-la-Vallée, 32 kilometres (20 miles) east of the centre of Paris, received 9.66 million visitors in 2017.

Avenue des Champs Élysées, Paris! (2019)

10 things to do in Paris (NO EIFFEL TOWER. NO SACRE COEUR. NO NOTRE DAME)

Without the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur and Notre Dame, what is there to do in Paris? Including a few less touristy locations, here are 10 things to do in Paris in 2019.

1 - Place de la Concorde.
The largest square in Paris, and most likely a location you'll pass through regularly during your visit.

2 - Arc de Triomphe.
The views from the top are my favourite of the whole city. A dedicated video for the Arc de Triomphe:

3 - Disney
Although I love Paris, it was nice to step back from the hustle and bustle, and enjoy a bit of magic. A playlist with a tour around Disney, the riverboat ride I mention in this video, plus both disney parades:

4 - Louvre museum
The Louvre museum is huge. You really need several visits in order to enjoy it properly, especially if you're interested in history and art in general. If you have specific interests don't forget to download the map. I'll add the link to the end of this list. Dedicated video exploring the Louvre

5 - St. Jacque's Tower / St. James's Tower
This is a nice, small area tucked away in plain sight. Surrounded by trees and a small garden it makes a great place for a quick picnic and to rest your feel during a busy day of sight seeing.

6 - Choco story Paris
This was a nice little 'something different' to do. Although we are tourists, and other people there were tourists, it doesn't strike me as a traditional touristy thing to do. It was nice and quiet during our visit.

7 - Musee d'Orsay
The musee d'Orsay was joint first of my favourite museums in Paris. Its the perfect size. The building is beautiful and acts as an exhibit in its self. A dedicated video to this beautiful museum:

8 - Seine River Cruise
Although I enjoyed the cruise, its certainly something you want to plan for a warmer day. Enjoy the full tour here:

9 - Musee l'Orangerie
The other 'joint first' favourite museum in Paris due to its size, and dedication to impressionist art, my personal preference. If you can spare just one hour you won't regret dedicating it to the l'Orangerie museum. Take a closer look in this video:

10 - Enjoy a walk around this beautiful city with no end destination in mind. You'll be amazed at all the fantastic little pockets of interest you find, as well as all the great cafes, bars, restaurants and clulbs.

As stated in the video here is the map for the Louvre museum:

If you're struggling to decide which museum to visit, why not check out this video where I compare the Louvre, d'Orsay, and l'Orangerie:

I also have many other Paris based videos on my channel so in case you'd like to check it out here is the link:
