The medieval village
Haut-de-Cagnes, a medieval village located at the top of the castle hill, is the historic part of the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
650 inhabitants have chosen to live in this district, classified as a historic site in 1948, which has managed to preserve the serenity of village life, outside the hectic pace of the Côte d'Azur.
Patina of centuries, stones steeped in history, shaded, narrow and flowery streets, unusual views of the Mediterranean and the Mercantour, everything contributes to retain the visitor in search of authenticity.
Unique site on the French Riviera
Haut-de-Cagnes has managed to both preserve the mystery of the strongholds of Provence and open up widely to visitors who roam it.
A maze of steep streets paved with pebbles, vaulted passageways, flower-decked stairs, eye-catching houses, unusual viewpoints, artists' studios, Haut-de-Cagnes reveals itself at every step...
The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul
The church, which had become too small to contain all its faithful, was restored and enlarged in the 16th and 18th centuries.
The work completed in 1762 doubled the proportions with the higher nave visible in the right part, a main entrance portal was also added. It is visible from the church square behind the building. At the time, the parish of Cagnes had 1,200 souls.
In the church, you can admire some religious paintings from the 18th century, including the canvas that adorns the high altar and represents the handing over of the keys to Saint-Pierre.
The paintings of the Stations of the Cross, produced by the painter Charles Barkev on the occasion of the 2000 Jubilee, offer the particularity of representing Cagnois from Haut-de-Cagnes who agreed to pose to illustrate the Passion of Christ.
When The Rounded Hill...
“Cagnes” is a name of Ligurian origin which means “inhabited place on a rounded hill”.
This rocky outcrop, which culminates at 91 meters above sea level, offered our ancestors an ideal surveillance and defense position, near a river and good land.
This place was first occupied by the Celto-Ligurians and then by the Gallo-Romans.
When Provence united with France in 1483, Cagnes became a border town on the only road leading to France from the States of Savoy.
From the 16th century, this border zone which entered into a cycle of great European wars was often looted and sacked.
The reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV bring back wars and multiple invasions of the border area.
During the French Revolution, in 1790, Cagnes still had only 1,388 inhabitants, most of them peasants who lived from the cultivation of vines, olive trees, hemp, citrus fruits and early vegetables.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when Renoir came to settle in our city, from 1903 to his death in 1919, Cagnes was the capital of the canton with around 3,000 inhabitants.
Attracted by the celebrity of the Impressionist master, many painters who loved the Mediterranean light came to settle in this picturesque town which is nicknamed The Montmartre of the Côte d'Azur, and which attracts celebrities from the world of arts and entertainment until the 1960s.

We began our trip in Zürich and from there went to Liechtenstein via Sargans. We then continued to St. Moritz to catch the Glacier Express to Zermatt. After hiking by the Matterhorn, we continued northward to Interlaken, Thun, and Bern, visiting the beautiful Jungfrau region and the villages of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Mürren. We got the chance to fly in a tiny airplane with a stranger over the alps and see the iconic Jungfraujoch from the sky! We then finished our trip in the gorgeous city of Lucerne, a perfect bookend to a beautiful trip????????

Cascade Source de Lison is an extraordinary waterfall near Nans-Sous-Sainte-Anne (west of Pontartlier) in the region of Franche Comte/Jura, France.
Cascade Source de Lison is easy to reach from Pontarlier, Besancon or Dole. Drive to Nans-Sous-Sainte-Anne and take the D103 to “Source de Lison”, you will see the signs. A little further there is a sign “Source de Lison”. Go right here onto road D477. The road ends at a gift shop, parking and information center. The parking is FREE.
From the parking, it is a 200-meter walk to cascade Source de Lison and the caves and the beginning of the river Lison.
Although the waterfall of Source de Lison is only 10 meters high, it is very spectacular to be seen. The origin of the river lies in a cave and Cascade Source de Lison falls almost directly out of the cave.
Cascade des Tufs, also called Cascade Baume Les Messieurs, is a gorgeous waterfall near Baume les Messieurs in the region Franche Comte/Jura, France.
From Lons le Saunier take the D417 to Champagnole, after 12 kilometers take the exit to the left to Baume Les Messieurs. Make a left and follow the signs “Grottes”. At the end of the road, you will see a restaurant, you can park your car there for FREE. From here it is a short walk to Cascade des Tufs.
The site is easily accessible and is a great destination to visit with your family. Cascade des Tufs is a very beautiful waterfall where the water of the river Dard gushes over with moss-covered big rocks, forming an exceptional shape with many colors.
The source of Cascade des Tufs lies a few meters up at Petite source de la Cuisance. A hole in the mountain wall of cirque du Fer a Cheval consisting out of chalkstone also called Tuf. This is where the name Cascade des Tufs comes from.
You can visit Cascade des Tufs at every time during the year. It is beautiful during every season. In autumn the colors, in winter the amount of water, in spring the green colors and in summer you have a clear view on the moss.
