Let's go visit a 17th century fort and a canal, in Chambly, Quebec. On this video we will visit, two Canadian national historic sites about 30km south east of Montréal on the Richelieu River a fort and a canal. This bridge we are crossing now, is an important factor for the canal. we'll visit it later in the video. This small-town is where the descendants of European immigrants settled in the 17th century. It attracts visitors to see the Fort and the Canal during the summer the fort was built to the style of classic French fortification, using local stone. It was built here to protect new France generally, Montréal from hostile invasions. It is free to visit the surrounding park, if you would like to visit inside the fort it is about $8 per person. You will get to see re-enactments of military drills in costume. This is the second main attraction in Chambly. These days it is mainly used for leisure crafts. In its early days before the WWI, it was used as a major commercial route between USA and Canada. Now we are on the main jetty; it was renovated and rebuilt in 2020 with more space for relaxing and take-in the views of the river. let's head back up to see the locks operation. This lock has an interesting feature I’ll get to that in just a moment. I’ve done another video on lock-operation so, I will not show how it works; the link for that is in the description. The water is being filled to lift the boat to the higher level and the boat is ready to cross to the other side. Remember that bridge we were on at the beginning of this video?
Here is where that comes to play. The interesting feature I mentioned on these locks is the road traffic needs to be stopped for the boat to pass and the bridge moves to the side to make room for boats on the canal. Once the boat passes safely to the other side the bridge is re-fastened to the road when the bridge is back in place and the road is back open all this waiting traffic can get to their destinations.

The Chambly Canal is a National Historic Site of Canada in the Province of Québec, running along the Richelieu River past Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Carignan, and Chambly.
Building commenced in 1831 and the canal opened in 1843. It served as a major commercial route during a time of heightened trade between the United States and Canada. Trade dwindled after World War I, and as of the 1970s, traffic has been replaced by recreational vessels.

It is part of a waterway that connects the Saint Lawrence River with the Hudson River in the United States. Lake Champlain and the Champlain Canal form the U.S. portion of the Lakes to Locks Passage.

Google Maps

The Canal has 10 bridges—8 of which are hand operated—and nine hydraulic locks.
Draft: 6.5 ft (1.98 m)
Clearance: 29 ft (8.84 m)
Canal Length: 12 km (7.5 mi)
Dimensions of smallest lock: 110 ft × 21 ft (33.53 m × 6.40 m)
Passage time: 3 to 5 hours

Fort Chambly National Historic Site | One of 8 Historic Canadian Forts That Still Exist Today

This imposing stone structure has been guarding part of one the largest navigable waterways in North America for more than two centuries. It was first constructed in 1711 to defend the colony and three wooden forts preceded the stone fortification. For many years this fort was the main footing of the defensive chain of fortifications along the Richelieu River, which was the easiest route into New France.

Today we are heading to a historic city in Canada, the Québec City. Québec City is located approximately a 3-hour drive north east of Montréal. It is the provincial capital of Québec.
Founded in 1608, the city sits atop a hill on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River. Historically the city was fortified to protect the country from invasions. With its rampart preserved Québec is the only remaining fortified city in North America, north of Mexico. This is one of the gates to the citadel. The most significant landmark of this city is the Fairmont le Château Frontenac luxury hotel. Built in 1893, it has been an icon of the Canadian history and a National Historic Site of Canada. In the district of old Québec with its European flare, charming boutiques on the narrow streets, makes you feel like you are in fairytale. The historic town square still serves the public at Place Royale. Keep your eye out for unusual installations around town like these upside-down cars, or this guy hanging upside down on a fire escape. The best way to enjoy the historic district of old Québec, is by walking there are many stairways and passages connecting upper and lower parts of the city. There is also a funicular that connects to the Dufferin Terrace below the Château Frontenac for only $3 per ride. Not too far from the city only 15km down the river is a beautiful waterfall. To get a different view there are panoramic stairs and also, a funicular that costs $15 roundtrip. You can even walk across the suspension bridge above the waterfall. Also, just another short drive further down the river is the historic shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré at the main entrance this beautiful door is handmade in copper. It is the oldest pilgrimage site in North America. Among the artistic masterpieces of stain-glass windows and mosaics is an exact copy of Michelangelo's La Pietà.

Montreal in Canada has a population of 4,027,100, landmarks, travel, tourism, hotels

Montreal in Canada has a population of 4,027,100, landmarks, travel, tourism
Greater Montreal is the most populous metropolitan area in Quebec, and the second most populous in Canada after Greater Toronto. In 2015, Statistics Canada identified Montreal's Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) as 4,258.31 square kilometres (1,644.14 sq mi) with a population of 4,027,100.[3]
A smaller area of 3,838 square kilometres (1,482 sq mi) is governed by the Montreal Metropolitan Community (MMC) (French: Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, CMM). This level of government is headed by a president (currently Montreal mayor Valérie Plante).
The inner ring is composed of densely populated municipalities located in close proximity to Downtown Montreal. It includes the entire Island of Montreal, Laval, and the Urban Agglomeration of Longueuil.
The outer ring is composed of low-density municipalities located on the fringe of Metropolitan Montreal. Most of these cities and towns are semi-rural. Specifically, the term off-island suburbs refers to those suburbs that are located on the North Shore of the Mille-Îles River, those on the South Shore that were never included in the megacity of Longueuil, and those on the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Peninsula. Communities in that area are also informally referred to as the 450, after the telephone area code that has served the region since 1998.
Due to their proximity to Montreal's downtown core, some suburbs on the South Shore (Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert, and Boucherville) are usually not included in the off-island suburbs even though they are on the mainland.Baie-d'Urfé

Fort Chambly : historic fort in La Vallée-du-Richelieu Regional County Municipality, Quebec. It is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.[1] Fort Chambly was formerly known as Fort St. Louis. It was part of a series of five fortifications built along the Richelieu River that were built to protect travellers on the river from the Iroquois. The region is informally known as la Vallée-des-Forts.

Drone Footage (DJI Mini 2) - Chambly, Quebec, Canada

Chambly is an off-island suburb of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located in the Montérégie region, inland from the South Shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

Chambly is home to the massive Fort Chambly, built with local stone between 1709 and 1711 in the style of Vauban's classic French fortifications. It was built at the mouth of a large basin, on the site of successive wooden forts dating back to 1665. Fort Chambly was the largest in a series of fortifications on the shores of what was known as the Iroquois River (later known as the Chambly River, finally becoming the Richelieu River in the nineteenth century).

Chambly is also known for the Chambly Canal, a National Historic Site run by Parks Canada. It was built in 1843 to bypass several kilometers of successive Richelieu River rapids between the towns of Chambly, QC, and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Part of a series of waterways connecting the Saint Lawrence River and New York City, Chambly Canal was built to facilitate commercial traffic between Canada and the United States.

Trade dwindled after World War I, and as of the 1970s, traffic has been replaced by recreational vessels. Today the canal is enjoyed by tourists and more than 7,000 pleasure boats in the summer, and ice skaters in the winter.

St-Joseph of Chambly Church, at 164 rue Martel, was built between 1880 and 1881.

Walking Tour Historic District Old Quebec City Canada ???????? 2022 Umbrella Alley Place Royale Citadel

Québec City is the provincial capital of Québec.
