Arles to Lyon via Avignon, Viviers, Tournon & Chalon-Sur-Saône.
In June I travelled through the Provence region of the south of France on a river cruise. We started in Arles and travelled to Lyon via Avignon, Viviers, Tournon and Chalon-Sur-Saone.
Each day we took an excursion which was included on our cruise, this video takes you through each place that we visited and will give you an insight into the trip. DRIVING FRANCE • Givry to Châlon-sur-Saône 4K
Driving from Givry to Châlon-sur-Saône.
Situé en Bourgogne, dans le département de Saône-et-Loire, à environ dix kilomètres au nord-ouest de Chalon-sur-Saône, ce chef-lieu de canton compte trois hameaux viticoles : Cortiambles, Poncey et Russilly.
Ce village viticole est bordé au sud-est par la forêt communale, à l'ouest par le vignoble de la côte chalonnaise et les chaumes. Le vignoble est implanté sur des versants au sous-sol calcaire, sur des sols argilo-calcaires, et exposé au sud/sud-est.
Le climat est tempéré à légère tendance continentale, avec des étés chauds et hivers froidsRP 1, et une amplitude thermique assez importante entre ces deux saisons. Les précipitations sont assez hétérogènes sur l'année, le mois de mai étant le plus arrosé. Le vent qui souffle une partie de l'année est la bise. Les gelées tardives sont peu fréquentes sur le village en général. Il y a bien quelques lieux-dits où les risques de gelées sont plus importants (on parle de zones gélives). De violents orages peuvent s'abattre sur la commune, parfois mais peu souvent, avec de la grêle.
Givry est une commune rurale, car elle fait partie des communes peu ou très peu denses, au sens de la grille communale de densité de l'InseeNote 1,3,4,5. Elle appartient à l'unité urbaine de Givry, une agglomération intra-départementale regroupant 2 communes6 et 5 038 habitants en 2017, dont elle est ville-centre.
Par ailleurs la commune fait partie de l'aire d'attraction de Chalon-sur-Saône, dont elle est une commune de la couronneNote 2. Cette aire, qui regroupe 109 communes, est catégorisée dans les aires de 50 000 à moins de 200 000 habitants
L'occupation des sols de la commune, telle qu'elle ressort de la base de données européenne d’occupation biophysique des sols Corine Land Cover (CLC), est marquée par l'importance des forêts et milieux semi-naturels (50,5 % en 2018), une proportion sensiblement équivalente à celle de 1990 (50 %). La répartition détaillée en 2018 est la suivante : forêts (44,9 %), terres arables (16,7 %), zones urbanisées (10,3 %), cultures permanentes (10,3 %), zones agricoles hétérogènes (9,6 %), milieux à végétation arbustive et/ou herbacée (5,6 %), prairies (1,8 %), mines, décharges et chantiers (0,7 %).
L'IGN met par ailleurs à disposition un outil en ligne permettant de comparer l’évolution dans le temps de l’occupation des sols de la commune (ou de territoires à des échelles différentes). Plusieurs époques sont accessibles sous forme de cartes ou photos aériennes : la carte de Cassini (xviiie siècle), la carte d'état-major (1820-1866) et la période actuelle (1950 à aujourd'hui).
La fondation de la ville remonte à l'époque gallo-romaine. La vigne arrive à l'époque des conquêtes romaines. Des restes d'amphores ont été trouvés dans le vignoble et le village. L'empereur romain Domitien ordonne en 92 l'arrachage partiel des vignes dans le Midi et en Bourgogne, afin d’éviter la concurrenceRP 2. Probus annule cet édit en 280RP 3. À partir du vie siècle, les vins de cette commune jouissent d'une haute réputation
La chapelle de Notre-Dame, fondée à la fin du xiiie siècle par Jacques Doyen, est dotée, dès cette époque, d'un luminaire pour lequel Guillemette de Cortiambles, veuve en 1297 de Josserand, chevalier en 1268, marié en 1277 (père Pentecôte de Cortiambles en 1254), donne six deniers pour une torche à l'élévation (1299). Étienne Doyen vend une vigne à Givry en 1238 à Jeanne, veuve de Mayhulot, homme de l'évêque. Les enfants de Laurent Doyen vendent à l'évêque de Chalon, en 1322, deux ouvrées de vigne à Cortiambles.
Les fortifications de la ville datent du Moyen Âge (xiiie siècle)RP 5.
Le bourg de Givry était peuplé de 1 200 à 1 500 personnes dans les années 1340. La peste noire tue 615 personnes au moins dans l'été et le début de l'automne...

In this episode we join the AmaWaterways AmaCello for our river cruise through Burgundy and Provence in Chalon-Sur-Saone. We board the ship, give you a cabin tour of French Balcony Cabin 229, show you the food onboard AmaWaterways and set off on our excursions to the Hospices de Beaune and visit a Chateau in Rully for a very special Burgundy wine tasting.

Southern France 2023 Episode 17: Chalon-Sur-Saône
Our river cruise ended in Chalon-Sur-Saône where I again enjoyed a bike ride around the town and environs.
The Church of Saint Pierre was built between 1698 - 1713 in the Italianate Baroque style with a Neo-Byzantine exterior from the 1800s. Anne-Marie Jahouvey, a nun who took her vows here in 1807, went on to help liberate slaves in the South American colony of French Guiana. In the morning, a farmer’s market was taking place in the square outside the church.
The charming streets of Chalon-Sur-Saone have a number of handsome houses, some with decorated facades, while others are historic half-timbered structures.
In front of the cathedral is a square surrounded by Renaissance timber-framed houses, while a modern fountain adds a bit of whimsy.
Saint Vincent Cathedral reflects a wide range of architecture, from its Neo-Gothic facade and two 19th c. towers to interior elements that date back to the 1000s. The columns in the nave have carved Romanesque capitals, while the stained glass dates to the 16th century. Some of the chapels are decorated with medieval and Renaissance art, including one fresco from the 1400s. In the sanctuary is a tapestry woven in Brussels in 1510. The cloister, guarded by a cat, is the only remaining canons-cloister in Burgundy, its exterior walls dating to circa 1000.
The Nicéphore Niepce Museum is dedicated to a hometown hero, the inventor of photography. Exhibits include the world’s first cameras, a collection of early photographs, and a display of cameras through the ages.
Among the remaining images, you can see our ship, the Ama Cello, docked alongside the river. Right next to the ship was the city’s war memorial where we were privileged to see a special ceremony, complete with a marching band.

Cruising French canal Saone from Chalon- Lyon
Sailing French canal.
After some wonderful days in Chalon, where we got to see most of the city, we sailed further down the Saone.
It was an absolutely fantastic road and we enjoyed the summer to the fullest. We passed a disused lock, which had been converted into a marina. Next stop on our trip was in Macon. We were located in a nice harbor, but somewhat far from the city.
But that does not stop a bunch of long-distance sailors from seeing the city. So I think we probably walked about 10km that day.
After Macon, we should start looking a little more to the first suburbs of Lyon.
