Places to see in ( Westbury - UK )

Places to see in ( Westbury - UK )

Westbury is a town and civil parish in the west of the English county of Wiltshire, most famous for the Westbury White Horse. The most likely origin of the West- in Westbury is simply that the town is near the western edge of the county of Wiltshire, the bounds of which have been much the same since the Anglo-Saxon period.

Westbury is located in the far west of Wiltshire, close to the border with Somerset. It lies at the northwestern edge of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) southeast of the city of Bath, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the county town of Trowbridge and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of the garrison town of Warminster. Other nearby towns and cities include Frome, Devizes, Salisbury and Bristol. Nearby villages include Bratton, Chapmanslade, Dilton Marsh, Hisomley, Edington, Upton Scudamore, North Bradley, Rudge, Standerwick, Hawkeridge, Heywood and Yarnbrook.

There are several suburbs including Frogmore, Bitham Park, the Meads and the Ham (all northside), Chalford, Leigh Park and Westbury Leigh (southside). Westbury Leigh is generally considered as a village separate to Westbury itself, though it has become contiguous with the town. Leigh Park is a district developed since the late-1990s that is contiguous with Westbury Leigh, and incorporates a large medical centre, a community hall and a Tesco Express store.

In the past, Westbury was sometimes known as Westbury-under-the-Plain to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. Westbury is nestled under the northwestern bluffs of Salisbury Plain, and it is there that the town's most famous feature can be seen: the Westbury White Horse. It is sometimes claimed locally that the White Horse was first cut into the chalk face as long ago as the year 878, to commemorate the victory of Alfred the Great over the Danes in the Battle of Eðandun (probably, but not certainly, at the nearby village of Edington). However, scholars believe this to be an invention of the late 18th century, and no evidence has yet been found for the existence of the horse before the 1720s. The form of the current White Horse dates from 1778, when it was restored. In the 1950s it was decided that the horse would be more easily maintained if it were set in concrete and painted white. The horse's original form may have been quite different from the horse seen today. One 18th-century engraving shows the horse facing to the right, but in its current form it faces to the left.

Westbury centres on its historic marketplace, with the churchyard of All Saints' Church (14th century) behind it. All Saints' has a heavy ring of bells, an Erasmus Bible, a 16th-century clock with no face constructed by a local blacksmith, and a marble bust of William Phipps by Robert Taylor. The west window of the church was donated by Abraham Laverton, who also built Prospect Square (1869) and the nearby Laverton Institute (1873), which he donated to a local charity, known today as the Laverton.

The A350 road passes through the town and a controversial Westbury Bypass was once proposed which would have reduced traffic in parts of the town but would have had a negative effect on the landscape on the east of the town. The eastern bypass scheme was eventually rejected after an Independent Planning Inquiry recommended against it in 2009. The town remains a bottleneck on the A350 route. The town is an important junction point on the railway network, as it lies at the point where the Reading to Taunton line, formng a link from London Paddington to Penzance, intersects the Wessex Main Line, linking Bristol and Bath Spa to Salisbury and Southampton. Westbury railway station is on the west of the town.

( Westbury - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Westbury . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Westbury - UK

Tewkesbury Cotswolds England 2018

COTSWOLDS ENGLAND July, 2018. Tewksbury is best known for the Tewksbury Abbey and the Battle of Tewksbury which took place in 1471. Many delightful shops to visit!

Stroud, England, UK - Driving Tour 4K

Stroud is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is the main town in Stroud District. The town's population was 13,500 in 2021.

Below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, at the meeting point of the Five Valleys, the town is noted for its steep streets. The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the town, and the Cotswold Way path passes by it to the west. It lies 10 miles (16 km) south of the city of Gloucester, 14 miles (23 km) south-southwest of Cheltenham, 13 miles (21 km) west-northwest of Cirencester and 26 miles (42 km) north-east of the city of Bristol. London is 91 miles (146 km) east-southeast of Stroud and the Welsh border at Whitebrook, Monmouthshire, is 19 miles (31 km) to the west. Not part of the town itself, the civil parishes of Rodborough and Cainscross form part of Stroud's urban area.

Stroud acts as a centre for surrounding villages and market towns including Amberley, Bisley, Bussage, Chalford, Dursley, Eastcombe, Eastington, King's Stanley, Leonard Stanley, Minchinhampton, Nailsworth, Oakridge, Painswick, Randwick, Selsley, Sheepscombe, Slad, Stonehouse, Brimscombe & Thrupp, Whiteshill and Woodchester.[better source needed]

In March 2021 The Sunday Times named Stroud the best place to live in the UK, citing the town's abundance of green spaces, independent spirit, and school quality.

Severn Way: Elmore, Gloucestershire

Saturday 3rd November 2018

After a LONG hiatus, I returned to my walk along the Severn Way, moving further north towards Tewkesbury. This was starts by the canal at Saul Junction, follows the Way up towards Quedgely and then returns to the start along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal path.

I don't often talk directly to the camera my video but I recently bought a wind muffler (link below) and I think this worked quite well... All feedback is welcome. I also find that the mic on my camera picks up A LOT of noise from the lens but I think I've managed to hide and disguise that well, here.

My next walk along the Severn Way will pass through Gloucester, with at least one more outing to follow that.

Cotswold Way - Day 6 of 8 Dursley to Hawkesbury England's most scenic & interesting multi-day hike

Cotswold Way Day 6 Dursley to Hawkesbury Upton

Due to the inclement weather arriving later in the day, and breakfast not being included in the price, we decided to make an early start. We had visited Sainsbury's the night before, so had breakfast in our rooms before departing at 7.45am. We had checked with the landlord the night before and he explained how to leave via the fire escape, we did look very suspicious though!! The path goes through the town turning right past The Old Spot Inn, up a steep road, through the wood, before emerging onto the Dursley golf course at 8.15am, then we turned right down a path. There is an alternative route straight across the golf course which would save a couple of miles, but we chose the more scenic route round Stinchcombe Hill. Continuing we came to a shelter with views to both Severn Crossings, the Malverns, Brecon Beacons and beyond, we reached another topograph and a stone bench at the top of Stinchcombe Hill 219m.

Continuing through woods, and across a large field, heading towards a tower on the hill. We arrived in the small village of North Nibley at 10.15am/5 miles, and headed past the open-air church service to the very welcoming North Nibley Café/Village Shop. We stopped for coffee and cake and bought some lovely cards. Continuing uphill once more, through the woods to the Tynedale Tower. This was built in 1866 and is 33m high, built to commemorate William Tynedale, a local resident who translated the Bible from Latin into English. He was later accused of heresy and burned at the stake in France in 1536. It is sometimes open to the public to climb up, sadly though not on this occasion. We continued along the scarp edge, passing through Brackenbury iron age fort. On the way down to Wotton, we passed a copse of trees which were planted in 1815 to commemorate the victory at Waterloo, and have been renewed twice, once in 1887 to commemorate the jubilee of Queen Victoria, then again in 1952.

We entered the village of Wotton-under-Edge (the farm in the wood) and bought some lunch. There are plenty of shops, pubs and places to stay and plenty of very interesting historic buildings and information boards. We were shown round the almshouses which were built in 1642, by some friendly locals. We continued, the path passing through the cemetery and we could see black clouds rolling in once more. We put on our waterproofs, as the wind blew and rain poured down. Fortunately, we found a thick area of forest to shelter in whilst we ate lunch (2pm). Continuing, the path was just a stream down through the woods, but at least our feet in walking boots were dry. It eventually stopped raining, the path crossing pleasantly undulating countryside. We passed another tower 36m high, this one built in 1846 to remember General Lord Robert Somerset who fought in the battle of Waterloo, before we turned left along the main road to Hawkesbury.

We were very happy to arrive at the Fox Inn, very wet. Dinner in the pub restaurant was delicious, with large portions provided, I had the carvery. Heavy rain was forecast to last all night, and for the next day, making the paths even muddier!
