Lake Chala, a hidden Volcanic Gem, Taveta, Kenya

Lake Chala
Lake Chala in Taveta is a deep four-square kilometre crater lake straddling the border of Kenya and Tanzania. This beautiful Crater Lake is located in North Taveta. It is a caldera lake, therefore it is very deep, accounting for its beautiful turquoise blue-green appearance.

A passer-by may not know that it exists because it’s completely hidden from view, making it all the more mysterious and exciting to visit. The lake is fed by ground-water from Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The lake has a unique ecosystem with some endemic species like Lake Chala tilapia, a critically endangered species, found only in this lake. Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus Niloticus), were introduced in the lake in the early 1900’s.

long time ago, in the ancient land of Taveta, on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, there lived two clans. The story goes that one day a mysterious woman appeared and asked for a place to sleep. But the first clan she approached were in the middle of celebrating a bumper harvest and were having their annual sorghum beer drinking festival. So, the clan said to her “go away, you dirty miserable woman”.Sad and disappointed by this treatment, the woman went to the village of the Mnene clan and made the same request. The Mnene clan welcomed her with delicious food, and gave her a warm place to sleep. The following day, the mysterious woman woke up happy but warned the Mnene clan about the curse and calamity she was going to bring upon the clan who had chased her away. She told them about a similar incident that happened at a place called Simbi Nyaima where a lady called Anyango cursed the villagers for mistreating her.

Later, Simbi village sank after a deluge of rain and formed what is now called Lake Simbi Nyaima in Kendu Bay.The mysterious woman then disappeared. That night, the ground in Taveta started to shake, and fear gripped the villagers as they did not understand what was going on. The tremors got stronger and stronger, houses collapsed, animals began to run helter-skelter, dogs howled with fear.

Suddenly there was a loud bang! A huge plume of black smoke shot up from the ground and covered the sky! The ground began to sink. The villagers cried out for help but to no avail. The ground sunk and became an enormous crater. Water welled up and the villagers disappeared. The curse of the mysterious woman was fulfilled. And this is the legend of how Lake Chala came into being.Legend has it that at night, the villagers who sunk into the lake can be heard beating drums and crying out to be rescued! It is also believed that the whirlpools that form on Lake Chala during the day are the unsettled spirits of the villagers who sunk into the lake. And, their descendants are warned never to swim in the lake. Whenever they do they drown!

Tanzania is a blessed destination with 16 national parks which are amazingly unique. Every national park differs from the other for various features. While there are the national parks with mountains as their major attractions, others are just amazing for the amount of wild animals they contain.

Have you ever seen or heard about the wildlife sanctuary bordering the sea?? Wow that is Saadani National park where when lucky you can find elephants, lions, buffaloes and leopards basking around the beach J

In today’s post about Tanzania national Parks I will give you a flavour on the Tanzania national Parks that has mountains among their attractions. And these are about four of our stunning sixteen Tanzania national parks. These are of course Kilimanjaro National park, Arusha National Park, Mahale Mountains national parks, Udzungwa mountains National Park.

Let me take you to one after another, should I?? I bet yes, I will start with the park with the highest free standing mountain on the planet and that is Kilimanjaro Mountain

Kilimanjaro mountain national park

Kilimanjaro mountain (The roof of Africa) is located about 300 kilometres south of the equator just near the city of Moshi. Kilimanjaro Mountain has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from being the highest free standing mountain in the planet, it is also the highest mountain in Africa. In Kilimanjaro national park you can do;

Climbing,
Wildlife Watching. In trekking you can see baboons, bush pigs, mongooses, elephants and a number of other animals. But keep in mind that you might need to hire an armed park ranger to reach some interior habitats due to the fact that you will be in the potential danger of meeting leopards, buffalos and other large animals
Visiting the Chala Crater Lake
With the top peak being 5,970 ft, Kilimanjaro Mountain has several routes to use while climbing such as Marangu route, Machae route, Rongai route, Umbwe route, Shira route, and Lemosho route and mweka route

Tanzania National Parks | Tanzania Travel company

@ClubFred explores Lake #Chala on the slopes of #Kilimancharo in Tansania

Club Fred takes a weekend excurson to Lake Chala (suaheli: Dschalla) one of Tansaina´s caldera lakes. Due to its importance as a possible sweet water resource the bordes of Kenya and Tanzania cross this lake on the eastern edge of Mount Kilimanjaro not far from teh border town of Taveta and 55 kms out of Moshi.the road is busy and in the last strech a dirt road, so calculate at least 2 hours driving time. Being a natural preserve of Tansania, you have to pay 10$ at entrance gate and another 8$ at the lodge situated on the rim of the crater for using the steep and slipery track trough the jungle down to the shore. Bring your swim suites - the bath is worth the trip....

Lake Chala Campsite - Campsite at crater lake Chala

Lake Chala Campsite - Campsite at crater lake Chala. Read more at
Lake Chala is a crater lake in a caldera on the borders of Tanzania and Kenya on the eastern edge of Mount Kilimanjaro, not far from the town of Moshi and 8 km north of Taveta. Depending on the time of year, it ranges in colour from deep blue to turquoise and green, it is surrounded by a 100 metres high crater rim. The lake is fed by groundwater flows, which come from Mount Kilimanjaro, fed and drained under ground with a rate of about 10 million m³ / year. Even the Chala loses volume. It´s level had dropped in the last 6 years, by 2.4 metres, at the start of 2011 the water level has risen again by over 1 metre. The lake is home to the endemic Lake Chala tilapia which is now considered Critically Endangered on the IUCN red list of threatened species.
Crocodiles were introduced to Lake Chala in the early 1900s, and in 2002, a woman was killed by a rare Dwarf crocodile while swimming in the lake. Since then the local fishermen, tired of having their nets ripped to pieces, started an eradication programme by shooting and poisoning. It is doubtful if any crocodiles remain in the lake today. This stunning volcanic area is rapidly growing in tourism and it is now possible to stay at Lake Chala at the new camp on the Tanzanian side.
