What to Do in Nimes and Avignon? | France Travel Guide
Join us on our trip to France where we travel to the historic cities of Nîmes, Avignon, Arles, and Orange located in southern France, and hold some of the best preserved examples of ancient Roman architecture and history.
In Episode 11 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we feature highlights of our trip around the southern France region starting with a morning visit to the city of Nîmes where we explore the various Roman architecture and historic sites throughout the city including the Arena of Nîmes, Maison Carrée, and the Temple de Diane located in the beautiful Les Jardins de la Fontaine.
We stop for a few hours at the famous Pont du Gard, a UNESCO site and one of the best preserved examples of Roman architecture, specifically of an aqueduct bridge, in the world. The views here are so lovely!
We based ourselves in the city of Avignon, known for the historic Palais des Papes, a historical palace and fortress in southern France, which was once the seat of Western Christianity! From here we explored the city of Arles which contains several examples of Roman architecture collectively referred to as the Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles, all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Lastly, we visited the city of Orange which contains of the the best preserved examples of all Roman theatres. These cities are a short distance away from Avignon, so definitely recommend staying here for a few days.

L’entrée principale de l’église se situe sur la place Jeanne d’Arc, emplacement de l’ancien presbytère démoli pour créer cette place. Le porche est consacré au portrait de Saint Denys, son saint patron.
L’église a beaucoup servi et pas seulement pour le culte. Au XVI° siècle, le Conseil de la Communauté (ex Conseil Municipal) y tenait ses réunions. C’est également là que se réunissaient les chefs de famille pour leurs assemblées générales et pour les élections.

Aix-en-Provence is a university city with historic architecture and beautiful fountains at its heart. The streets are full of the energy of youth as well as the hustle and bustle of seemingly endless street market stalls. I really wasn't expecting so much energy when I visited Aix-en-Provence. It blew me away!

Vaugines est une commune française située dans le département de Vaucluse, en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
Niché aux contreforts du versant sud du Luberon, Vaugines a su garder son charme authentique et provençal à l'état pur qui réside dans ses pittoresques ruelles et escaliers voûtés, ses placettes, ses belles demeures.

L'église de Saint Barthélemy, les ruelles du vieux village incrustées de nombreux fossiles (Rue des Coquillages), les belles demeures La Commanderie (rue des Amazones) et la Capitainerie méritent une visite, sans oublier la Place de la Mairie et sa fontaine où l'on peut faire halte à la terrasse du bar ou de la pizzeria.
Vaugines est aussi le point de convergence de plusieurs sentiers de grande randonnée permettant aux marcheurs, cyclistes et cavaliers, de découvrir le Luberon, sa flore et sa faune.
La plus ancienne mention du village de Vaugines date de 1920, mais son territoire fut occupé dès l'antiquité. Au XIème siècle, l'abbaye de Psalmody fonda dans la vallis juvina appelée aussi vallisamata où coulent de nombreuses sources, un petit prieuré à l'emplacement de l'église romane actuelle. Au XVIème, puis au XVIIIème siècle l'agglomération regroupée autour de son château, aujourd'hui disparu, prend un nouvel essor et s'étend à l'ouest sous la falaise de poucelles.
