Chenonceau 1:08
Chenonceau is the most-visited château of the Loire Valley, France, and is the only one built across a river.
Chenanceau is most famous for its setting across the river. It’s as if the building formed a sort of island or ship moored in the rapidly running Cher River, which joins with the Loire River a few miles away. Our series about the châteaux of the Loire is also bringing you to Amboise, Chambord, Cheverny, Azay and Blois and a few other places, with our home base in the city of Tours.
Amboise 5:00
Amboise, in the Loire Valley, France, has two châteaux and a charming old town with souvenir shops and some excellent restaurants in a pedestrian.
Visit both the big castle and Clos Lucé, most famous as the final home of Leonardo da Vinci. You actually get to walk through Leonardo’s bedroom and his study, you can see the desk that he sat at – it’s really quite inspiring. Leonardo was already over 60 years old when he left Italy in 1516 to relocate to the château where he was supported in fine style by the king of France.
Amboise is famous for the grand château that was once the home of the French royal court. Francis the First was succeeded by his son Henry II who was succeeded by his son Francis the second, and he brought his young bride Mary Stuart, the Queen of the Scots, to the château.
Chambord 8:54
Chambord is the finest of all the châteaux in the Loire, France, and the largest.
The château to end all châteaux, a masterpiece, perhaps the greatest architectural triumph the French Renaissance ever created.
This is a dream place to visit, 156 meters long, 117 wide and 56 meters tall with 426 rooms, 77 staircases, 282 fireplaces, more than 800 sculpted columns and with massive towers at each corner. It's second in size only to the Château of Versailles, making this one of the great national monuments of the country.
The first thing you'll see inside is one of the main architectural highlights, a spectacular double spiral staircase – it's the centerpiece of the château. It forms a double helix with two intertwined flights of steps ascending three floors, without ever meeting.
Cheverny 14:15
Château Cheverny is another top tourist attraction of the Loire, renowned for magnificent interiors and its dog kennels.
In the past the château was a homelike and peaceful abode for many centuries, protected from the world beyond.
Amazingly, the château owners are descendants of the same family who originally built it in the early 17th century.
One hundred dogs live at Cheverny, so be sure to have a look at them. They can be seen all day during your visit.
Azay-le-Rideau 16:12
We’re at the Château of Azay-le-Rideau, which is one of the beautiful châteaux of the Loire Valley. There are half a dozen major castles that you want to be sure to get a look at, and certainly Azay is one of those. The setting is spectacular – the gardens around it are beautiful and there's a moat formed by a small river that surrounds most of the château, so when you visit here you want to be sure not only to see the interior but to walk around, all around the outside.
Chinon 18:29
Driving through the main shopping lane of the historic town of Chinon, in the Loire, France, gives us a quick preview of the lanes in which we'll soon be taking a little walk. It's primarily a pedestrian zone but our tour van has permission to bring us in here and then drop us off – very convenient for us
Blois 22:11
The French city of Blois in the Loire Valley has one of the largest and most interesting of the châteaux of the Loire Valley, built up in a variety of architectural styles over its 700 year period. It was home to many of the kings and queens of France. And there is also a very friendly pedestrian center to the town.
Because so many powerful kings lived here and were associated with the château, it was built up over the centuries in a variety of architectural styles. This one building exhibits the medieval and the Renaissance and then the French classic style later of François Mansart.

You’ll find the city of Tours is a very good home base for staying a few days, and from here you can easily explore the Loire Valley, and visit the many illustrious Château that are in the region. Most of the major attractions are within 30 to 40 minutes away from Tours – it's very convenient either by train or by private Tours company.

10. Chenonceau
The Château de Chenonceau is a French château near the small village of Chenonceaux, in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. The château was built on the site of an old mill on the River Cher, sometime before its first mention in writing in the 11th century. It was designed by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme.
9. Loire a Velo
A brand new network of cycle-paths and cycle routes on minor roads now makes cycling along the River Loire even more enjoyable -- and safer -- than it was before.
8. Chartres cathedral
Chartres Cathedral is a medieval Roman Rite Catholic cathedral located in Chartres, about 80 kilometres southwest of Paris. It is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The current cathedral, mostly constructed between 1194 and 1250, is the last of at least five which have occupied the site since the town became a bishopric in the 4th century.
7. Food markets
Every town has its lively, traditional weekly market where you can stock up on picnic provisions and local specialities.
6. Canoe and kayak trips
The best way to get to know the River Loire is by boat, and you can rent canoes and kayaks all over the region.
5. Montsoreau and Candes-St-Martin
Candes-Saint-Martin is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. It overlooks the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers from a steep hill on the left bank of the Loire, and marks the boundary between the modern departments of Indre-et-Loire to the east, and Maine-et-Loire to the West.
4. Villandry gardens
The lands where an ancient fortress once stood were known as Colombier until the 17th century. Acquired in the early 16th century by Jean Le Breton, France's Controller-General for War under King Francis I, a new château was constructed around the original 14th-century keep where King Philip II of France once met Richard I of England to discuss peace. It is also known for its beautiful gardens.
3. Au Cabernet d'Anjou
This former Loire mariners' bar enjoys a sun-flooded terrace overlooking one of the prettiest stretches of the river.
2. Chateaudun
Looming over the river on its clifftop height, little-visited Chateaudun is an eerily Gothic chateau. Châteaudun is located about 45 km northwest of Orléans, and about 50 km south-southwest of Chartres, on the river Loir, a tributary of the Sarthe.
1. Chateau de Blois
The Royal Château de Blois is located in the Loir-et-Cher département in the Loire Valley, in France, in the center of the city of Blois. The residence of several French kings, it is also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to drive the English from Orléans. Built in the middle of the town that it effectively controlled, the château of Blois comprises several buildings constructed from the 13th to the 17th century around the main courtyard.

Château de Courtanvaux - Vallée du Loir | Châteaux in the Loire Valley | Places to Visit in France
Many know the Loire Valley. There are many castles in the Loire Valley, picturesque villages, good food and wines. But there is also a Vallée du Loir (without -e). This unknown arm of the famous river Loire looks even better, but is cheaper, less crowded and less touristy. The Vallée du Loir has unprecedentedly beautiful castles, offers fine wines (Vin de Jasnières) and has historic country houses. The unspool nature of the French countryside is reflected along the Loir banks. Château de Courtanvaux is one of the most beautiful castles in the Vallée du Loir and has a rich history.
The first buildings of Château de Courtanvaux date from the 14th century, when the lords of Bessé built a medieval mansion designed to reassure the people and to serve as asylum in the event of a conflict. However, this had only a limited strategic importance.
It was in the 15th century that Château de Courtanvaux obtained its status as a castle. Many works were carried out between 1450 and 1490 and the Château de Courtanvaux in the Vallée du Loir was enlarged with a chapel, a dovecote and a main castle.
Between 1500 and 1661, Château de Courtanvaux was owned by the Souvré family. They give the castle a Renaissance touch during this period. Château de Courtanvaux was always transferred by inheritance or marriage. Three families succeeded each other in the following periods. Some members of these families have illustrated the rich history of France.
For example, a wedding made François-Michel le Tellier one of the residents of this castle. François-Michel le Tellier was minister of war under King Louis XIV of France.
After the death of the last owner, the municipal of Bessé-sur-Braye bought Château de Courtanvaux in 1976.
The rich historical past of France was partly formed in Chateau de Courtanvaux in the Vallée du Loir. A visit to Château de Courtanvaux is therefore a visit to the history of France.

The Château of Villandry is one of the most famous castles of the Loire Valley. Villandry is home to the most beautiful gardens of the Loire Valley. Seven different sections, a French garden, an English garden, 125,000 plants, 52 kilometers of boxwood… all the statistics are over the top. But beyond the numbers, the gardens of Villandry are absolutely stunning. And the château of Villandry itself dates back from the Renaissance and hosts great collection of Spanish paintings from the 17th century.

Cheverny in the Loire Valley: The chateau that inspired Tintin's castle
The château of Cheverny is the most homogeneous and best preserved chateau of the Loire Valley. It was built in 10 years and was never restructured. It also didn't suffer much damage during the French revolution and all the sculptures and furniture are original to the castle.
The château of Cheverny also inspired cartoonist Hergé when designing the château de Moulinsart (Marlinspike Hall in English) where the adventures of Tintin take place.
Another thing to see at the chateau of Cheverny is the feeding of the dogs. Cheverny is a hunting lodge and they have a pack of more than 100 hounds. The feeding of the hounds every morning is an incredible spectacle to watch.

We adore France and its many unique facets: its people, culture, landscapes, wine, food, art, and history. We also love being surrounded by châteaux, both public and private, which we can explore together! After 20 years here, we have learned many things about living in France, renovating châteaux, and appreciating the extraordinary riches surrounding us. We originally decided to make these videos as a way to share our lives with our loved ones worldwide during the pandemic lockdowns. However, we soon realised that many others are at home alone, and it is our privilege to open our home to you, our new friends. The Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, is one of the most recognisable châteaux in the world because of its very distinctive French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures.
The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King Francis I of France.
Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the châteaux of Blois and Amboise.
The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with some doubt, to Domenico da Cortona; Leonardo da Vinci may also have been involved.
Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty-eight years of its construction (1519–1547), during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu.
With the château nearing completion, Francis showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old archrival, Emperor Charles V, at Chambord.
Châteaux in the 16th-century departed from castle architecture; while they were off-shoots of castles, with features commonly associated with them, they did not have serious defences.
Extensive gardens and water features, such as a moat, were common amongst châteaux from this period.
Chambord is no exception to this pattern.
The layout is reminiscent of a typical castle with a keep, corner towers, and defended by a moat.
Built in Renaissance style, the internal layout is an early example of the French and Italian style of grouping rooms into self-contained suites, a departure from the medieval style of corridor rooms.
The massive château is composed of a central keep with four immense bastion towers at the corners.
The keep also forms part of the front wall of a larger compound with two more large towers.
Bases for a possible further two towers are found at the rear, but these were never developed, and remain the same height as the wall.
The château features 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases.
Four rectangular vaulted hallways on each floor form a cross-shape.
In 1792, in the wake of the French Revolution, some of the furnishings were sold and timber removed.
For a time the building was left abandoned, though in the 19th century some attempts were made at restoration.
During the Second World War, art works from the collections of the Louvre and the Château de Compiègne were moved to the Château de Chambord.
The château is now open to the public, receiving 700,000 visitors in 2007.

Chateaus of France's Loire Valley
The Loire Valley in central France is filled with beautiful chateaus. Two of the most beautiful and most visited are the chateau Chenonceau and Chambord near Amboise. Chenonceau is called the Ladies Chateau because of the women who have lived there. Chambord is the largest chateau in the valley with 426 rooms but it has only been lived in for about seven weeks.

Its name comes from the Marquis de Bussière of the Maussabré family who lived there for four centuries, up until 1936.
Maussabré was the name of an ancestor, a knight who was mutilated during the crusades and whose companions then called le mal sabré (badly hacked with a sabre) which later became Maussabré.
The castle was first mentioned in 1234, probable date of its construction, in the archives of the city of Tours. Refurbished during the Renaissance, its decorative elements reveal the magnificence of the period, as shown, for instance, in the exceptional bands containing the medallions.
The slate roof is in perfect condition and has been regularly checked and repaired in true traditional manner. It also contains handsome architectural elements, typical of the Renaissance. The castle still has many traces of the 13th century.
One can imagine the battles against the Saracens in the two defense towers, the machicolations and the rampart walks, with en-corbelled brattices and murder holes.
