Driving in Puerto Rico - Road Trip on Highway 1 Series - Cayey
Part 2 of the Highway 1 Series focuses on the Cayey municipality from Cidra to the Curva Del Árbol in Salinas. La Curva del Árbol is a landmark where anyone can stop and take a look at nature and appreciate spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and the Municipality of Guayama.
Highway 1 is also filled with cyclists usually on Sundays. Please exercise caution if you are in this area.

Cayey Revealed: History, Peaks, Nature & Food in Puerto Rico
Today we visit the great city of Cayey, on the east central region of Puerto Rico. We’ll visit “La Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción”, a Roman Catholic Parish Church built in 1815, the old Cayey City Hall Building, the Ramón Frade Square and Band Shell, the monument to the Puerto Rican Peasant (that’s el monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño), the beautiful Tetas de Cayey, a pair of mountain Peaks located on “La Sierra de Cayey, the world-famous Guavate Restaurant Area and El Charco Azul, a wonderful swimming hole that’s actually blue like its name suggests.

A las 8:00 a.m. del miércoles 20 de septiembre el ojo del huracán María se posó sobre Caguas, con vientos cercanos a las 155 millas por hora. El municipio de Cayey, que colinda con Caguas, tenía un equipo de trabajo guarecido en el Estadio Pedro Montañez, donde habían instalado su Centro de Operación de Emergencias (COE), esperando que las inclemencias del tiempo permitieran salir a ayudar a personas afectadas por la tormenta.
La noche anterior, el alcalde Rolando Ortiz y varios empleados habían tenido que salir a auxiliar a personas que, contrario a las advertencias emitidas, habían decidido quedarse en sus casas a pesar de vivir en lugares de peligro en los barrios Polvorín, Sumido y Guavate.

Rincon Criollo is a chinchorro located in the Ruta Panorámica (#1). A chinchorro is a restaurant type of location that is well known for having: cheap prices, cold beers, local food and music, among other things.

We took a long drive over to Cayey and saw the famous lechoneras of Guavate, Puerto Rico. All along this road (184) there are a wide variety of restaurants who specialize in cooked pork on a spit as well as a lot of comida criolla.
