Catalina Island Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares her Catalina Island Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

Day trip to Catalina Island, California
Santa Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, lies southwest of Los Angeles. It's known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. The resort town of Two Harbors lies to the north. To the south, in the city of Avalon, palm trees and cabanas line Descanso Beach. Avalon’s circular, art deco Catalina Casino is a cultural center with a movie theater, ballroom and museum.
Catalina was originally settled by the Tongva, who called the island Pimuu'nga or Pimu and referred to themselves as Pimugnans or Pimuvit. The first Europeans to arrive on Catalina claimed it for the Spanish Empire. Over the years, territorial claims to the island transferred to Mexico and then to the United States. During this time, the island was sporadically used for smuggling, otter hunting, and gold-digging, before successfully being developed into a tourist destination by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. beginning in the 1920s. Since the 1970s, most of the island has been administered by the Catalina Island Conservancy.
Its total population in the 2010 census was 4,096 people, 90 percent of whom live in the island's only incorporated city, Avalon. The second center of population is the unincorporated village of Two Harbors at the island's isthmus. Development also occurs at the smaller settlements of Rancho Escondido and Middle Ranch. The remaining population is scattered over the island between the two population centers.

Located southwest of Los Angeles, Catalina Island is a beautiful weekend destination, home to sandy beaches, scenic trails, great scuba diving, golf and other activities. Explore the scenic town of Two Harbors, visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden, stop by the Nature Center at Avalon Canyon, and learn about the history of the area at the Catalina Island Museum.
Here are some of the best things to do on Catalina Island.
Number 10. Starlight Beach.
Starlight Beach is a rocky beach cove located on the west end of Catalina Island surrounded by rocky cliffs. It has a trail leading to the beach and is strictly a day-use beach without the possibility for overnight camping.
Number 9. Avalon Theater.
The Catalina Casino's Avalon Theatre, located beneath the Casino Ballroom in Avalon, is a classic movie palace featuring first-run movies since 1929. With ancient Roman tiled mural panels and other Art Deco murals painted by renowned artist John Gabriel Beckman, it is exquisitely decorated in an 'atmospheric' style.
Number 8. Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden.
Located in the Avalon Canyon, the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden honor the memory of, chewing gum magnate, William Wrigley Jr., who lived from 1861 to 1932. Located in Avalon Canyon, the gardens and memorial is a gateway to the Garden to Sky Trail, one of Catalina Island's most popular hikes.
Number 7. Nature Center at Avalon Canyon.
In order to protect and restore the island's natural fauna and flora, the Catalina Island Conservancy established the Avalon Canyon Nature Center, as one of two nature centers. Its exhibits and displays focus on the Island's natural history and conservation efforts and are located at 1202 Avalon Canyon Road.
Number 6. Trans Catalina Trail.
Located on Santa Catalina Island at the western end, the Trans-Catalina Trail stretches for 37.2 miles between Avalon and Starlight Beach. Once hikers have finished the hike, they will have to return to Two Harbors to catch a boat back to the mainland, which adds another nine miles, making the total mileage a bit over 46 miles.
Number 5. Catalina Island Museum.
The Catalina Island Museum was established in 1953 to preserve, interpret, and collect Santa Catalina's rich history. With a variety of engaging and visually appealing exhibits and displays, Catalina Island Museum showcases thousands of years of history in Avalon's historic Casino Building.
Number 4. Two Harbors.
On the isthmus of Catalina Island, Two Harbors is a rustic seaside village named after its two harbors, Isthmus Cove and Catalina Harbor. Two Harbors is located 20 miles from Avalon, separated by a half-mile-wide strip of land. From San Pedro, high-speed ferries provide access to the mainland.
Number 3. Green Pleasure Pier.
There are many stories and memories associated with the Green Pleasure Pier, one of Catalina Island's oldest and most popular piers. Stretching out 400 feet into the ocean, the pier is full of Island history. Originally built to ease fishing congestion and incoming boats, Green Pleasure Pier is now a hub of excitement and activities for locals and tourists alike.
Number 2. The Lobster Trap.
This seafood restaurant in Avalon, California, serves fresh fish on Catalina Island and is consistently voted one of the best places to eat in Avalon by locals and visitors alike. With a variety of options to satisfy nearly any palate, The Lobster Trap is one of Catalina Island's best bars, serving some of the freshest seafood on the island.
Number 1. Bluewater Avalon.
From the historic SS Catalina Ferry dock site, Bluewater Avalon boasts stunning harbor views and beach views. In addition to great waterfront views, the restaurant offers great seafood. From Bluewater Avalon's spacious outdoor patio or indoor dining room, visitors can enjoy the tranquil bay views. This classic New England seafood establishment takes on a Catalina Island flare.

Sitting 30 miles off the coast of Southern California’s mainland and from Los Angeles, is Catalina Island, one of the state’s most underrated place that is easily accessible with a one-hour ferry ride. My friends visiting from Northern California and I decided to spend a weekend getaway to this hidden gem island. We rented a golf cart to ride around the tiny island; walked around Downtown Avalon, the main town in the island; went on a food adventure as we tried out different restaurants in the town; and spent a lot of time relaxing and laying out at Descanso Beach. How to get to some of the best spots on Catalina Island
The main area of Avalon is very walkable, however, if you want to tour around to see the most in a short amount of time you'll need a golf cart.
This drive at your own pace adventure will take you along the coastline and over the hills of Avalon where you can stop at scenic outlooks with breathtaking views and photo ops of Avalon Bay.
Here's everything you need to know about renting a golf cart in Catalina Island:

I recommend a two-hour golf cart rental from Catalina Island Golf Cart.
Golf carts are available for one to two hours only.
A reservation is recommended to guarantee you a golf cart. A must during the high season and when there is a cruise stopping on the island that day.
Drivers must be 25 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license.

Take a virtual trip to Catalina Island, one of California's Channel Islands, starting with the ferry ride from Long Beach.
Walk with us through the town of Avalon, past the old casino, then go kayaking to a private beach. Afterwards we'll jump in the water and snorkel at one of California's premiere diving sites (Casino Point Dive Park) where you'll see the beautiful underwater life that is unique to this part of the world, including our state fish, the bright-orange Garibaldi.
