Isle of Man TRAVEL GUIDE. Best Places to Visit in Isle of Man | TOP 20 part 1

Hi friends. This video about Isle of Man. See more on same playlist.

The Isle of Man (Manx: Mannin [ˈmanɪnʲ], also Manx: Ellan Vannin [ˈɛlʲan ˈvanɪnʲ]), also known as Mann /mæn/, is a self-governing British Crown dependency situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. The head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, holds the title of Lord of Mann and is represented by a lieutenant governor. The United Kingdom has responsibility for the island's defence.

Humans have lived on the island since before 6500 BC. Gaelic cultural influence began in the 5th century AD, and the Manx language, a branch of the Goidelic languages, emerged. In 627 King Edwin of Northumbria conquered the Isle of Man along with most of Mercia. In the 9th century Norsemen established the thalassocratic Kingdom of the Isles, which included the Isle of Man. Magnus III, King of Norway from 1093 to 1103, reigned also as King of Mann and the Isles between 1099 and 1103.[4]

In 1266 the island became part of Scotland under the Treaty of Perth, after being ruled by Norway. After a period of alternating rule by the kings of Scotland and England, the island came under the feudal lordship of the English Crown in 1399. The lordship revested into the British Crown in 1765, but the island never became part of the 18th-century kingdom of Great Britain, nor of its successors, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the present-day United Kingdom. It has always retained its internal self-government.

In 1881 the Isle of Man parliament, Tynwald, became the first national legislative body in the world to give women the right to vote in a general election, although this excluded married women.[5][6] In 2016 UNESCO awarded the Isle of Man biosphere reserve status.[7]

Insurance and online gambling each generate 17% of the GNP, followed by information and communications technology and banking with 9% each.[8] Internationally, the Isle of Man is known for the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle races[9] and for the Manx cat, a breed of cat with short or no tails.[10] The inhabitants (Manx) are considered a Celtic nation.[11]

0:32 Peel Castle
A Viking stronghold, Peel Castle stands on St Patrick's Isle, linked to the town of Peel by a causeway. The rugged coastline and the ruins of the castle outer walls make this an interesting stop.

02:00 Niarbyl Bay
Down a long winding lane, past the cafe and steep hill, you arrive at Niarbyl Bay.
Secluded and quaint, you suddenly feel like a fisherman from years gone by.

03:14 The Calf of Man
Calf of Man is a 2.50-square-kilometre island, off the southwest coast. It is separated from the Isle of Man by a narrow stretch of water called the Calf Sound.
There is a cafe and some rugged walking trails too keep you occupied, and on some days you can see the seals basking on the rocks

04:28 Cregneash
A small charming village with a tourist museum, seen on map above.
Home to a flock of the rare four-horned Loaghtan sheep, much of the village is made up of a living museum with the small white cottages forming the exhibits. Inside the victorian farming and fishing equipment is displayed and demonstrated.

05:31 Isle of Man Steam Railway
Starting in Douglas and steaming east to Port Erin via Castletown this narrow gauge railway is a must do attraction. The scenery is stunning and is a superb way to spend an hour or so chugging along the countryside.

07:47 CastleTown
CastleTown is the former Capital of Manx, and is home to Rushen Castle. The narrow streets and fishing cottages make this a delightful place to walk around.
It also holds the annual world tinbath championships.

09:41 Ballaglass Glen
lovely glen to walk through, a nice wooded area with the river flowing through the middle of it with some fantastic waterfalls, and there’s a fairy house hidden along the river too. Plenty of quirks for kids too like the wizard statue along one of the paths.

11:25 Douglas
11:45 Laxey Wheel and Mine
Built in 1854 to pump water from the attached mine, Lady Isabella as she is known is the largest surviving wheel of its kind in the world.

14:07 Manx Electric Railway
Running from Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey this has to be the most picturesque heritage railway (tramway) I have ever been on.
Starting in Laxey and part of the Manx Electric Railway, the
14:29 Snaefell Mountain Railway
offers daily services to the summit.
15:03 Laxey Beach
17:45 Laxey to Ramsey Manx Railway
18:31 Ramsey Harbour
Town on the MANX Electric railway route.

Construction is thought to have taken place during the 10th-century reigns of rulers of the Isle of Man – the Kings of Mann and the Isles. An old oak beam was found in the castle in the mid-19th century that contained the date 947. The last such King of Man, Magnús Óláfsson, is recorded in the Chronicle of Mann to have died at the castle in 1265. The original Castle Rushen consisted of a central square stone tower, or keep. The site was fortified to guard the entrance to the Silver Burn. The castle was developed by successive rulers of Man between the 13th and 16th centuries. The limestone walls dominated much of the surrounding landscape, serving as a point of dominance for various rulers of the Isle of Man. By 1313, the original keep was reinforced with towers to the west and south. In the 14th century, an east tower, gatehouses, and curtain wall were added.

Changing hands between the Scots and English
After its initial construction and use by the Norse-Gaelic rulers of the Isle of Man, the castle changed hands repeatedly between the Scots and the English. The Isle of Man was transferred to Scotland the year after Magnús Óláfsson's death as part of the Treaty of Perth, ending the 1263–1266 Scottish–Norwegian War. On 18 May 1313, with the help of his friend, Angus Og Macdonald, Lord of the isles and his fleet, the Scottish king Robert the Bruce invaded the Isle of Man at Ramsey. The island was captured in five days, the only resistance occurring at Castle Rushen, which was defended by Dungal MacDouall, who had once been Lord of Galloway and betrayed Robert Bruce's brothers, Alexander and Thomas, to Edward I who promptly had them executed as traitors. After a three-week siege, Robert captured the castle on 12 June 1313, gaining the Isle of Man as an outpost securing the approaches to western Scotland and the Hebrides.
After several more changes of hands the English and their supporters eventually prevailed. The English king Edward I Longshanks claimed that the island had belonged to the Kings of England for generations and he was merely reasserting their rightful claim to the Isle of Man.
From 1405 to 1738 the Isle of Man was controlled by the Stanley family, beginning with Sir John Stanley, who was given the title of King of Mann by Henry IV of England in 1405. The title King of Mann was replaced in 1521 by the title Lord of Mann, held today by the reigning British monarch.

Castle Rushen in the English Civil War
During the English Civil War of 1642–1651 James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, the Lord of Mann from 1627 to 1651, sided with the Royalist cause. Known as The Great Stanley (Manx: Yn Stanlagh Mooar), James established a secondary Royalist court at Castle Rushen before leaving to fight the Parliamentarians in England. In August 1651 James sailed with two frigates, bringing 300 Royalists from the Isle of Man to meet Charles II in Lancashire.[15] Having fought several battles during the Civil War's third phase, Lord Derby was captured at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651 and executed at Bolton on 15 October 1651. When James left the Isle of Man he left his wife, Countess Charlotte – the renowned successful defender of Lathom House in 1644 – in command of the Isle of Man. The French-born Charlotte Stanley held Castle Rushen until a rebellion led by Manx nationalist Illiam Dhône (English: William Christian) and the mutiny of her own garrison forced her to surrender to invading Parliamentarian forces led by Colonel Robert Duckenfield by the end of October 1651.
