We are in the department of the Atlantic Pyrenees in the Canton of San Juan De Luz, we have left Hendaye and the border with Spain behind and we are going along the coastal route towards Ciboure and Saint Jean De Luz, beautiful French Basque towns that will finish us taking a pleasant drive to Bidart, the last town to reach Biarritz, which we will visit in our next video, do not miss it!

Cruise Bordeaux aboard Hotel Barge Rosa | European Waterways
The Bordeaux region, with its special ‘terroir’, has been producing wine for around 2,000 years and some of the château estates have gained worldwide recognition for their superb and long-lived vintages. Bordeaux, with 247,000 acres, is a wine-producing area three times the size of Burgundy. Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world, as well as the most legendary. More than half the fine wines of the world come from France and about half of these are from Bordeaux.
Although the reputation is built mostly on red wines, especially those from the Médoc, St-Èmilion and Pomerol districts, the region produces the entire gamut of wines, including dry and sweet whites, and rosés.
Bordeaux is a region of such tremendous diversity in geography, soil, weather, and winemaking tradition that it produces a myriad of wines, each with a unique character. The range of Bordeaux wines is reflected in its 57 appellations, 61 grand cru classés, more than 9,000 wine-producing châteaux, and 13,000 wine growers.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. Euro Road Trip 2018. Day 12 - Towards the Atlantic coast
Day 12 of the trip and we leave the farmhouse on the outskirts of Mouchan heading first towards the nearby town of Condom. Today's route will take us in a predominantly northeasterly direction and for the most part will roughly follow the waterways that lead to the Bay of Biscay. The plan for the overall trip was always to avoid some of the major roads and to take in as much of the countryside and landscape within each country that we practically could.
Following that principle, this morning we pass through a number of towns and villages on our way to our intended lunch break in Bordeaux. Mézin, Barbaste and Casteljaloux are just some of the locations we pass through early on. We follow the D655 road to Antagnac and then take a mid-morning break in Grignols where there happens to be a market taking place for us to wander round. Back on the road we take to the D10, the road that will be the backbone of the rest of our morning route. We pass through Auron and towards Langon where we cross the Garonne river for the first time. The D10 runs alongside the river and takes us initially through Saint-Maixant and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont before we arrive at Cadillac and the Château ducal de Cadillac. It's at this point that, for the 2nd day running, we catch a glimpse of a French Air force jet in the rear camera. Langoiran sees us get the best view of the river so far as the roads get busier the closer we get to Bordeaux.
Once in Bordeaux, we cross the Garonne river again as we head into the center to our lunch break destination close to the German U-boat pens of World War 2. There is a museum at the pens but our schedule didn't justify visiting for the short time we had available to spend here. The significance of visiting the pens is in how they tie in with the rest of today's planned route. The Garonne river that we've been crossing is the route the German U-boats used to take to dock at their base here. Most people would think of the U-boats as docking in a harbour at the seafront, but in this instance they would actually take a 50km+ journey inland from where the mouth of the Gironde estuary forms in the Bay of Biscay and eventually splits into 2 rivers, the Garonne that leads to the pens in Bordeaux being one of them. It's probably no surprise then to learn that this is the largest estuary in western Europe. Our remaining route for the day takes us perpendicular to the estuary and our hotel for the night in Royan overlooks the mouth of the estuary where the U-boats came inland.
After lunch we cross the Garonne for a third and final time and follow it's path for a while through some of the industrial, mainly water based, suburbs of Bordeaux before peeling off towards Saint-Vincent-de-Paul where we cross the Dordogne river, the other river that stems from the Gironde estuary. The afternoon will see us heading through wine country passing vineyard after vineyard. In Étauliers we passed a pâtisserie and the temptation was just too great so we turned around and indulged ourselves! This then became our mid-afternoon rest stop by default replacing the planned stop in Mortagne Le Port, though we still stuck to the very scenic route that took us the way we originally planned it. The planned route also meant that we spent the last 10km or so running right alongside the Gironde estuary as we made our way into Royan.
Our hotel in Royan was right on the seafront so we enjoyed a little time on the beach before heading off to find a restaurant and taking a gentle stroll back to recuperate ready for the next day of the trip.
