10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

10 Crap Towns in England

What are the crap towns in England? The name England evokes pride, and living in England on its own, in the UK for that matter, is something to be proud of. However, it is not all English towns that you can and should be proud of. Some places are considered ‘crap towns’ in England. Please note that this position doesn’t originate from us. It is from observation of those living in those towns in England and those who have visited. And those who are living in these towns agree that theirs are among the worst towns to live in England. Yet, we can’t find any ground to refute their position based on our private findings. In this video, you will see the towns that folks refer to as the 10 ‘crap towns’ in England.
10. Blackburn
We open this discussion in a large industrial town of Blackburn located in Lancashire. It’s north of the West Pennine Moors and on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley. Blackburn is just 8 miles east of Preston and also 20 miles northwest of Manchester. The mere consideration of its location alone could give some people an idea of the reason for its being labeled as one of the ‘crap towns’ in England.
Beyond that, however, pieces of ratings Blackburn is been given in this recent past are bad. Not long ago, the author of a popular report named it one of the most segregated towns in Britain. We dare add that the tough riot is one of the results of idleness, wants, and general dissatisfaction with life reflected in how people throng turn to street begging. You’ll see youngsters bunking off school and harassing passersby for money to be used in buying a cheeseburger.
9. Oldham
Not many people will expect this old town of Oldham which is also the administrative and authority center of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham to be described as a ‘crap town.’ But what does the reality on the ground portray about this large town in Greater Manchester? It shows that the town which is about 5 miles southeast of Rochdale and 6 miles northeast of Manchester is actually one of the worst towns to live in the UK. Don’t let us relate want we ourselves have found.
Some feel that the town lacks all culture and sophistication that can be emulated.
8. Castleford
“A trip to Castleford is a real eye-opener . . . and you need to keep your eyes open because if you dare to close them, they’d have your wallet faster than you could say” said a voter who voted Castleford one of the ‘crap town’ in the UK. Coming back home in England, a town with this recognition is certainly one of the crap towns in England. This town in the City of Wakefield within the county of West Yorkshire has always got bad reviews whenever it is to be discussed.
This low standard in this town may be due in part to its being a town of kith and kin. Sentimental attachments to relationships are likely to come in the way of standardization and adherence to the due process. This Wakefield’s largest town was also rued thus “you have to wonder whether the essence of chavdom stems from bad breeding, or in the case of Castleford, possible interbreeding.”
7. Blackpool
It might take a while before Blackpool get itself off a list like this. It is a consensus member in the rank of the ‘crap towns’ in the UK. We have also seen it mentioned in several lists of the worst towns to live in England and the UK. Blackpool is also on and off of lists of the most depressing towns to live in the UK. Why then is it still boasting of being the entertainment capital of the North it claims to be when a stratum of the society actually sees it as one of the most boring places to live in the UK?
A reviewer said of this town: “While in Blackpool all you smell is weed, McDonald's, KFC - you may think it's a jolly seaside resort with candy floss and donkeys but it's a scum-bucket for the transients who come here to draw benefits in a holiday resort instead of in an inner city.” Is that not what you would expect of a place described as a ‘crap town’ in England?

GREAT BRITAIN Shilton & Taynton, Oxfordshire (9 Oct 2022)

In September and October 2022 we visited England and Wales. Join us on our trips, day by day.
Shilton is a village and civil parish about 2.4 km northwest of Carterton, Oxfordshire. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 626.
Shilton village is on Shill Brook: a stream that rises southwest of Burford, flows through Shilton and Alvescot to Black Bourton, where it becomes Black Bourton Brook, which joins the River Thames downstream from Radcot. Shilton was historically part of the manor of Great Faringdon, and most of Shilton parish was an exclave of Berkshire until the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844 transferred it to Oxfordshire.

Taynton is a village and civil parish about 2.4 km northwest of Burford in West Oxfordshire. The village is on Coombe Brook, a tributary of the River Windrush. The parish is bounded in the south by the River Windrush, in the north partly by Coombe Brook and its tributary Hazelden Brook, in the west by the county boundary with Gloucestershire and in the east by field boundaries. The 2001 Census recorded the parish's population as 108.

Wantage Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 15 miles southwest of Oxford, is the town of Wantage. Historically it was part of Berkshire until 1974.

The first recorded reference to the town goes back to the 8th century, where it was written as 'Wandesiege', allegedly deriving from Old English for 'decreasing river'.

In 849 AD Alfred the Great was born in Wantage. In 871 he became King of Wessex, and by 886 he was dubbed King of the Anglo-Saxons. His rule proved pivotal as he was able to limit the progress of the Viking invasions by establishing 'burhs' i.e. fortified settlements. Two of his children would continue in this regard, as his son Edward the Elder succeeded as King of the Anglo-Saxons in 899, while his daughter Æthelflæd became Queen of Mercia from 911. It was in the early 10th century that the Viking threat was largely subdued during the respective rule of these two siblings following the establishment of more burhs, particularly around the frontier of Mercia and the Danelaw, although it would return later. Alfred also revolutionised education by ensuring that it was conducted in English, thus not limiting it to Latin-speakers.

In 1246 a market charter was granted to Wantage by Henry III. At the heart of the town, and just west of the market place, is the Church of St Peter and St Paul. This dates from the late 13th century, with 15th century additions.

In 1875 the Wantage Tramway opened. This transported passengers and goods between the town and Wantage Road station, which was located in the neighbouring village of Grove, about two miles to the north. The tramway closed to passengers in 1925, and to goods in 1945. Wantage Road station closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts - a controversial scheme to encourage road travel by closing over 2,000 railway stations in Great Britain. Today, public transport to Wantage consists of direct buses from Oxford, Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon and various local towns and villages.

Historically, Wantage was part of the county of Berkshire up until 1974 when, under local government reorganisation, it became part of Oxfordshire and the seat of the Vale of White Horse District Council.

Famous people from Wantage, aside from Alfred the Great, include jockey Lester Piggott.

Burford Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 17 miles west, and slightly north, of Oxford, is the town of Burford.

Geographically, Burford is situated at the edge of the Cotswold Hills, adjacent to the River Windrush. It is sometimes referred to as the Gateway to the Cotswolds. The town's name is derived from Old English 'burh' and 'ford', meaning 'fortification at the river crossing'.

During the late 11th century, Burford was acquired by Norman nobleman Robert Fitzhamon, who granted it a market charter. On account of the nearby Cotswold Hills, sheep farming yielded a thriving wool industry. Aside from agriculture, the town was historically home to various professions including milling, weaving, tanning and saddle-making.

In circa 1175, work began on the construction of St John the Baptist Church (seen around the 15-minute mark). Additions were made up to the 15th century culminating with the spire. The church is Grade I listed. Another notable work of architecture is the Tolsey (seen at the 3-and-a-half minute mark), which was completed in 1520. This was used by the Guild of Merchants to collect payment for local markets and fairs, as well as a meeting point for wool merchants. Since 1960 it has served as a local history museum.

In 1627 Christopher Kempster was born in Burford. Kempster became Christopher Wren's master mason during the time of the construction of the current St Paul's Cathedral. Among his other works are the Tom Tower in Oxford, also alongside Wren, and Abingdon County Hall.

Owing to its position on a historical crossroads, Burford was a staging post for stagecoach passengers in the era prior to the railways. As such, it had a thriving coaching inn trade, providing rest for horses and passengers. The last stagecoach passed through in 1850 and the emerging railways missed out Burford entirely. Consequently, much of the town's architecture predates the Victorian era, with over 250 listed buildings. Today, public transport consists of direct buses to and from Witney, Carterton and various other nearby settlements.

A day out in Burford, Cotswolds.

Join us as we visit Burford’s famous High Street that sweeps downhill towards the River Windrush, its three-arched medieval bridge and its impressive church, both sides of the street flanked by an unbroken line of ancient houses and shops.

Little has changed over the centuries, Burford is popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping, especially antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. Here you can stay in a hotel frequented by King Charles and Nell Gwynn, dine where Nelson dined or visit England’s oldest pharmacy, a chemists since 1734.

Half way down the hill, the 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful, local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past.

Beyond Paradise: Where is Martha’s cafe filmed? Port Eliot Estate, St Germans, Cornwall

In this video we search for the filming locations of Martha's cafe, the country house in Episode 3, 'The Solo Mare' and the tree where Humphrey's parachute is tangled in Episode 1.

We visit Port Eliot Estate in St Germans, Cornwall to discover if Martha's cafe is filmed there, There is a cafe in the stable yard but is it used for the Ten Mile Kitchen cafe in Beyond Paradise?

The stables are in the grounds of the Port Eliot Estate in St Germans, which is a small village about 8 miles West of Saltash in Cornwall. The Port Eliot Estate has been the seat of the Earl of St Germans since 1571 and is still owned by the Eliot family. Did the house provide the backdrop for episode 3?.

In this video we discover the location of the tree that Humphrey was dangling from in the opening scenes of Episode 1, but It's not Port Eliot!

LANGFORD: Newark and Sherwood Parish #38 of 84

NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #38: LANGFORD

Langford is located four miles north-east of Newark and two miles East of The River Trent. It’s based on A1133 which in turn branches off of the A46 between Newark and Lincoln

Langford has an interesting history for such a small place. This was at one time, the epicentre of the local wool trade thanks to John Barton, the wealthy wool merchant discussed in these parts before

It’s got two halls – Langford Hall and Langford Old Hall, both of equal importance. Village wise, it’s always been small, although as we journey around, we’ll learn exactly why.

It’s also changed considerably within the last 500 years, and there’s an unusual reason why. In Saxon times, most of the parish was moorland.

It wasn’t until the Middle Ages the land was developed, partly by the Knights Templar, before they were suppressed in 1303. It was then dominated by sheep farming for centuries

These days its tiny population have diversified into other trades. For example, Langford is where you’ll find Newark Fine Furniture – and we’ll talk about them as we walk around.

To finish with, we have a special trip to one of the most well known local landmarks, although I’d wager that not many people know it falls within Langford parish.

Trust me, you’ll want to watch this one until the very end. Let’s go!
