map of Nottingham England

Nottingham (/ˈnɒtɪŋəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten) NOT-ing-əm, locally /ˈnɒtnʊm/) is a city and unitary authority area in Nottinghamshire, East Midlands, England. It is 128 miles (206 km) north of London, 44 miles (71 km) south of Sheffield, 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Birmingham. Nottingham has links to the legend of Robin Hood and to the lace-making, bicycle, and tobacco industries. Nottingham is also the county town of Nottinghamshire and the settlement was granted its city charter in 1897, as part of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Nottingham is a tourist destination; in 2018, the city received the second-highest number of overnight visitors in the Midlands and the highest number in the East Midlands.

In 2020, Nottingham had an estimated population of 330,000. The wider conurbation, which includes many of the city's suburbs, has a population of 768,638. It is the largest urban area in the East Midlands and the second-largest in the Midlands. Its Functional Urban Area, the largest in the East Midlands, has a population of 919,484. The population of the Nottingham/Derby metropolitan area is estimated to be 1,610,000.[4] The metropolitan economy of Nottingham is the seventh-largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $50.9 billion (2014).[11] Aside from Birmingham, it is the only city in the Midlands to be ranked as a sufficiency-level world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.

Nottingham is a major sporting centre and, in October 2015, was named 'Home of English Sport'. The National Ice Centre, Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre, and Trent Bridge international cricket ground are all based in or around the city, which is also the home of two professional football teams: Notts County, formerly the world's oldest professional league club, and Nottingham Forest, famously two-time winners of the UEFA European Cup under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor in 1979 and 1980. The city has professional rugby, ice hockey, and cricket teams, also hosting the Aegon Nottingham Open, an international tennis tournament on the ATP and WTA tours. This accolade came just over a year after Nottingham was named as the UK's first City of Football.

Nottingham's public transport system won awards prior to 2015, including the largest publicly owned bus network in England. The city is served by Nottingham railway station and the modern Nottingham Express Transit tram system. In December 2015, Nottingham was named a 'City of Literature' by UNESCO, joining Dublin, Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Prague as one of only a handful in the world. The title reflects Nottingham's literary heritage, with Lord Byron, D. H. Lawrence, and Alan Sillitoe having links to the city, as well as a contemporary literary community, a publishing industry, and a poetry scene. The city is served by three universities—the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, and the Nottingham campus of the University of Law—hosting the highest concentration of higher education providers in the East Midlands. Ecology
Within the city, native wildlife includes red fox, peregrine falcon and common kingfisher.[35] Notable nature reserves around the city include Attenborough Nature Reserve SSSI, Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Holme Pit SSSI, Fairham Brook Local Wildlife Site and Wollaton Park. Due to its position as a central city with strong transport links, Nottingham has become home to invasive animal and plant species including rose-ringed parakeet, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam. #nottinghammap #nottingham

Blidworth colliery to Clipstone Junction Railway Cycle

Starting off on the former site of Blidworth Colliery, we head on along the long closed railway towrds Rufford Colliery. Once passed here, we jump onto the former Midland line that served Rufford Colliery and eventually met up with the Mansfield to Southwell line. Before leaving this line, we pass under the long closed Mansfield Railway that ran between Clipstone Junction and Mansfield.
Passing under the 2 access lines into Clipstone Colliery, we then run alongside the line all the way to Clipstone Junctions, where we meet up with the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway.

Clowne & Creswell Derbyshire Lost Railway History - Part 2

Clowne & Creswell Derbyshire Lost Railway History

We're back on my own doorstep at Clowne & Creswell in Derbyshire to have another look around some of the disused railways in the area.

We take a closer look in more detail at the former Midland Railway Clowne Branch (now Clowne Greenway), the old Clowne & Barlborough station. Also to see is the Clowne South station and Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway (LD&ECR) disused railway towards Creswell.

We can find lost and buried former railway infrastructure such as telegraph poles, insulator, old point and signalling work and station platforms buried in the woods.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.

However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

Nottingham England City Walk 2020

Nottingham is a city in the Midlands, UK. In Saxon times the site was named Snotingahame - village of Snotingas people. Later, the letter S dropped and spelling was Notingahame that evolved in modern Nottingham.
Nottingham is a lovely place to visit. Here are many points of interest linked to legendary, medieval, modern heroes: folklore hero Robin Hood, poet Lord Byron, football managers Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, and many many others.
Nottingham Castle attracts the tourist attention. It was built on the hill in 1068 by Normans. Now it is closed because of extensive renovation inside the castle site.
If you go from the castle gates down the street you get to the oldest Inn in the England - Old Trip to Jerusalem - dated back to 1189 AD.
Nottingham is not just all you see before your eyes. It is hidden city as well. More than 500 caves are situated under Nottingham streets, cafes, shops.... Many of caves are dated back to medieval times, approximately Norman times. However, many believe that caves might be here even before Norman times. Part of caves you can see from Peveril Drive street. But if you want to feel cave life, you can visit City of Caves - the museum dedicated to underground life.
Also, Nottingham is famous by its football clubs and legendary players and managers worked with teams. Notthingham Forest formed in 1865 and Notts County formed in 1862.
Enjoy your visit to Nottingham!

The Ghosts of Nottingham Castle

Nottingham castle has its share of ghosts, so we ventured back for some Halloween fun!

The castle's most famous ghost has to be that of Roger Mortimer, the Earl of March, who was captured at the castle by Edward III, dragged as a prisoner through the network of tunnels, and eventually hung as a commoner. First sightings and rumours of Mortimer's ghost appeared around 1921, attracting so many tourists that police officers were placed at the entrance to Mortimer's Hole...

The ghostly voice of Queen Isabella, the She-Wolf of France, was also heard calling out in the tunnels...Fair son, have pity on gentle Mortimer...

Perhaps the most anguishing cries heard are those of the 28 children, sons of Welsh noblemen, hung by King John on the castle ramparts. The children had been kept as hostages at Nottingham castle, but when King John was out hunting in Sherwood Forest and received the news that Llewelyn the Great was attacking the English border, John ordered the immediate execution of the children...

Mortimer's Hole is now re-open to the public after four years of restoration, cave tours can be booked here -
It really is amazing!!

4K Scenic Drive - A57 Snake Pass Westbound - Ladybower to Glossop - Peak District

Filmed in 4K. Pure Driving - No Commentary.

No rushing, just cruising.

Relax and enjoy a drive across the dramatic and beautiful A57 Snake Pass, one of England's most scenic roads through the glorious Peak District.

Joining the journey from the Ladybower Reservoir, near Sheffield, we cruise on very quiet roads across the moors to Glossop. It's a beautiful day, and the roads are nearly empty.

The journey was filmed in April 2022, and includes the three sections of roadworks around landslips that occurred during Storm Eunice in February 2022.

There's no commentary, just ambient sounds from the journey. There are occasional captions to help you know the location as we progress, together with some interesting facts along the way.

If you enjoy this film, please like and subscribe.

Film previously uploaded. This new version has dark text for the captions, making it easier to read.

Small, Simple, STYLISH Caravan - Xplore Activ 304 from Kimberley

The Kimberley Caravans Elddis Xplore Activ 304 is my NEW caravan, and in this video I give you a full tour. The Xplore 304 is one of the best caravans for beginners - it's small, simply, easy to tow, yet very stylish.

The video is divided into the following chapters:

00:00 - Introduction - introducing the Xplore Activ Range
01:48 - Exterior of the Xplore Activ 304
07:38 - Towing - why it's so easy to tow
10:21 - Interior tour of the Xplore Activ 304
22:22 - Breakages, failures, faults, and niggles
24:56 - How it could be better (for me)
26:30 - Final thoughts on the Xplore Activ 304

To check out the Kimberley Caravans Xplore Activ Range and all their other caravans and motorhomes, please see:

Please check out my video to the regular Elddis Xplore 304, a 2021 model, here:

If you missed the previous video all about collecting the caravan and the 'wet' handover from Kimberley Caravans, please check it out here:

If you fancy one of those lovely journals from the McNeills on wheels, check out their channel at: and their shop at caravangiftsuk.com

In this video I give you a tour of the exterior, the interior, and I explain why it's very easy to tow, making it idea for those who are apprehensive about towing. It's one of the best caravans for first time buyers as well as people like myself who are downsizing. Although it's a four berth family caravan, it's ideal for solo travellers like me and couples as well, thanks to its flexible living space.

Despite boasting all home comforts such as heating and a shower, it's a great lightweight caravan (1043kg) so you don't need a huge car to tow it. I tow with a Kia EV6 and I find it's an ideal caravan for EVs, thanks to its light weight and narrow width.

In the following video I will talk about the Whale heating and hot water, and also about the effect that downsizing to a smaller caravan has had on the range of the EV when towing.
