Transcript:
Occitanie is a region in South-West France. Its capital is Toulouse, the fourth biggest city in France, behind Paris, Marseille and Lyon.
The symbol of Occitanie is the Occitan Cross, the banner of arms of the Counts of Toulouse. You can see it everywhere in the region, but the biggest of these is in the Place du Capitole, in front of Le Capitole, the city hall and its most iconic building. You can visit the Capitole for free. Originally built in 1190, the current building dates from 1750 and the entire building is built from the area’s signature pink bricks. These bricks can be seen all over the city and is the reason why Toulouse is known as La Ville Rose, or The Pink City.
A city has existed on this spot since The Iron Age. Gauls, Romans and then the Franks inhabited its ever-changing streets and it became the capital of Aquitaine. Its position, on the French side of the Pyrenees, was pivotal in protecting France from the Spanish and also its Moorish occupiers.
In fact, had the French lost the Battle of Toulouse in 721 and the Battle of Poitiers in 732, then the History of Europe might have been very different indeed. The Umayyad Caliphate had occupied Spain in 711 and had been pushing North ever since, but their defeat in these two battles halted their progress and kept the Muslim civilisation on the Western side of the Pyrenees permanently. Since then, Toulouse flourished as an important Christian city, with scores of ambitious churches and monasteries built amongst its medieval streets.
Nearby is the beautiful town of Albi. The home of famed painter Toulouse Lautrec, the medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sitting on the River Tarn, its vast cathedral looms high above the town. Reportedly the largest brick building in the entire world, the cathedral was built as a statement of Catholic dominance after the destruction of the Cathars and their religion, which had been dominant in the region until they were ousted in the thirteenth century.
Next we head to Cahors, another medieval town, this time sitting inside a U-bend of the Lot River. The Valantre Bridge is one of several known as Devil’s Bridges, meaning that when it was built, people were so amazing by its technical achievement, they believed it could not possibly have been conceived or built by human’s. Subsequently, people thought it was built by the Devil himself. Which it was, obviously. The city itself also had a fairly devilish reputation as it famously allowed bankers to charge interest on its loans, which used to be known as the sin of usury by the church. Which is why Cahors is mentioned in Dante’s Inferno alongside Sodom as an example of cities of absolute sin.
Which we didn’t we headed to Foix, near to the border with Andora. A town centred around a rather impressive castle atop a rocky hill, it has been inhabited since the Romans built a fort there. Charlemagne founded the town itself and the castle was inhabited by Counts of Foix for centuries, until one them, Henry Navarre, was crowned Henry IV of France. And Henry IV is, like, a BIG deal in France because he ended the War between Catholics and Protestants by signing the Edict of Nantes. He was assassinated by a fanatical Catholic for doing so… But his legacy remained, nonetheless.
Our final stop is the glorious fortified city of Carcassonne. Yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel is a vast and sprawling medieval walled city that sat on the border between France and Aragon. Evolving from a small castle to the stone behemoth it is today, it has two concentric fortified walls and then a castle inside that. There are 53 towers in Carcassonne. One of which was the Inquisition Tower, where the Catholic Inquisition tortured anyone who didn’t ascribe to their beliefs. Which was a particularly relevant here, because Carcassonne was originally a stronghold of the Cathars. Make sure you head out onto the walls themselves to get the best views over the city and the landscape surrounding it.

Cahors, a historic and picturesque town in France

Quercy, in the Occitane region, is an ancient town and the historic capital of Quercy. It is located in a bend of the river Lot. The old town is full of buildings from the Middle Ages and the Rennaissance. The most famous monument is the Pont valentré (Balentré Bridge) built in the 14th century. In the middel of the old town is the cathedral of St Ethienne in romanesque and gothic style

Cahors Southwest France

Cahors is located about 1 1/2 hours north of Toulouse France by train. It is wedged inside a small peninsula in a loop in the River Lot. The 14thC Pont Valentre, a UNESCO heritage site and fortified bridge is the major attraction for visitors. However, there is so much more to see. Stroll the medieval streets and visit the many artisan shops. See the famous cap of Christ at Saint-Etienne Cathedral or just enjoy your surroundings while sipping on the Internationally famous Cahors wine with some appetizers using the local cheeses, foie gras and truffles.

Cahors, France: UNESCO Pont de Valentre Bridge

The medieval six-span Pont Valentre is said to be the most photographed sight in France outside of Paris! Built in the Fourteenth Century as part of the towns defenses, pilgrims on the Way of St. James had to cross Pont Valentre to continue the path and still do.

It is difficult to imagine a more dramatic sight than this bridge spanning the Lot River against a brilliant, sunshiny day. I know I did my share of photographing.

Explore the Beautiful French Pilgrimage Walk GR65 - Part 3: Figeac to Cahors @highbanks.pilgrim

The 3rd of 4 videos that describe a walk from Le Puy en Velay to the Spanish border at St. Jean Pied de Port. The mood of my first video was set by the wild and lonely Aubrac plateau. In my second video the mood changed as I walked through the beautifully preserved villages of the Lot River valley and on to Conques and Figeac. In this, my third video, the mood changes again as I leave Figeac to walk the vertiginous cliffs of the Cele River valley. The route eventually rejoins the Lot river and passes through another one of France’s designated ‘Les plus beaux villages en France’, the cliff-hanging St. Cirq-Lapopie, before continuing on to Cahors with its famous medieval bridge. The map that I use at the end of the video is from the Confraternity of St. James in the UK from whom I have written permission.
The route from Le Puy is one of France’s oldest medieval pilgrimage routes to Spain and links up with the famous el Camino, which crosses Northwest Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Thousands of pilgrims walked the route at great personal risk throughout the Middle Ages and the churches and hostels they visited are still there. The route was rediscovered and re-developed by volunteers several decades ago and is now one of France’s best loved long distance hiking paths. Hundreds of modern day pilgrims walk it each year and stay in the route’s network of pilgrim hostels or Gites. See my video for more information on the pilgrim’s passport or credential.
Ambitious walkers can finish this route, which is about 740 km, and pick up the el Camino at St. Jean Pied de Port or Roncesvalles in Spain, to continue to Santiago.

Explore the Beautiful French Pilgrimage Walk GR65 - Part 4 Cahors to St Jean @highbanks.pilgrim

The last of 4 videos that concludes my beautiful GR65 walk from Le Puy en Velay to Spain. It covers the portion from Cahors to St Jean Pied-de-Port at the foot of the pass over the Pyrenees. This part of the route passes through a series of beautiful hill top towns and ends with the mountains coming into view. Once again, several of France’s designated ‘Les plus beaux villages en France” are on this part of the walk, of which Lectoure and Auvillar are breathtaking! The map I use at the beginning is from the Confraternity of St. James in the Uk, from which I have written permission.
This series of 4 videos covers my pre-Covid walk along the Chemin de St Jacques via Podiensis, which is one of France’s oldest and best-loved medieval pilgrimage routes. The route is approximately 740 km through unspoiled rural France dotted with beautiful villages and ancient abbey churches. I completed almost 600 km of the route, jumping by bus from beyond Condom to the beginning of Basque Country where I walked the last 50 km into St. Jean. Ambitious walkers can continue their pilgrimage over the mountains and across northwest Spain to Santiago de Compostela, a journey from Le Puy of more than 1500 km.

CAHORS A walking tour around the city / Un paseo por la ciudad

Descripción

From Denmark to France - Summer In Cahors

Cahors

Découverte de Cahors.

Dramatic 2,000 Year Old Cahors, France

Cahors has an ultra-dramatic location, contained on three sides within a U-shaped bend in the River Lot. It is the chief city of the Lot and was founded 2,000 years ago by the Romans.

Today Cahors is perhaps best known as a famous wine center. Wander around the narrow streets in the old section with medieval houses, Baroque doorways, and Secret Gardens then sit down in a cafe or along the Lot River to watch the world go by.
