The medieval village
Haut-de-Cagnes, a medieval village located at the top of the castle hill, is the historic part of the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.

650 inhabitants have chosen to live in this district, classified as a historic site in 1948, which has managed to preserve the serenity of village life, outside the hectic pace of the Côte d'Azur.

Patina of centuries, stones steeped in history, shaded, narrow and flowery streets, unusual views of the Mediterranean and the Mercantour, everything contributes to retain the visitor in search of authenticity.

Unique site on the French Riviera
Haut-de-Cagnes has managed to both preserve the mystery of the strongholds of Provence and open up widely to visitors who roam it.

A maze of steep streets paved with pebbles, vaulted passageways, flower-decked stairs, eye-catching houses, unusual viewpoints, artists' studios, Haut-de-Cagnes reveals itself at every step...

The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul
The church, which had become too small to contain all its faithful, was restored and enlarged in the 16th and 18th centuries.
The work completed in 1762 doubled the proportions with the higher nave visible in the right part, a main entrance portal was also added. It is visible from the church square behind the building. At the time, the parish of Cagnes had 1,200 souls.

In the church, you can admire some religious paintings from the 18th century, including the canvas that adorns the high altar and represents the handing over of the keys to Saint-Pierre.
The paintings of the Stations of the Cross, produced by the painter Charles Barkev on the occasion of the 2000 Jubilee, offer the particularity of representing Cagnois from Haut-de-Cagnes who agreed to pose to illustrate the Passion of Christ.

When The Rounded Hill...
“Cagnes” is a name of Ligurian origin which means “inhabited place on a rounded hill”.

This rocky outcrop, which culminates at 91 meters above sea level, offered our ancestors an ideal surveillance and defense position, near a river and good land.

This place was first occupied by the Celto-Ligurians and then by the Gallo-Romans.

When Provence united with France in 1483, Cagnes became a border town on the only road leading to France from the States of Savoy.

From the 16th century, this border zone which entered into a cycle of great European wars was often looted and sacked.

The reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV bring back wars and multiple invasions of the border area.

During the French Revolution, in 1790, Cagnes still had only 1,388 inhabitants, most of them peasants who lived from the cultivation of vines, olive trees, hemp, citrus fruits and early vegetables.

At the beginning of the 20th century, when Renoir came to settle in our city, from 1903 to his death in 1919, Cagnes was the capital of the canton with around 3,000 inhabitants.
Attracted by the celebrity of the Impressionist master, many painters who loved the Mediterranean light came to settle in this picturesque town which is nicknamed The Montmartre of the Côte d'Azur, and which attracts celebrities from the world of arts and entertainment until the 1960s.

Among the most famous, stayed or lived in Haut-de-Cagnes, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Chaim Soutine, Foujita, Yves Klein, Georges Simenon (at 98, Montée de la Bourgade), Mouloudji (singer poet and composer), Suzy Solidor (singer and cabaret director), Georges Ulmer and Brigitte Bardot…

CAGNES SUR MER | Exploring the French Riviera

CAGNES SUR MER, FRANCE: Exploring the South of France & visiting the small French Riviera town of Cagnes Sur Mer close to Nice. Join me on a walk around the old town.
???????? More videos from this trip →

Having seen the hilltop castle from the window of a passing bus I decided to jump off and explore further. I walked uphill for around 25 minutes and discovered the small, beautiful old town of Cagnes Sur Mer. I really enjoyed my walk to the top as I was able to pass through small alleyways and tiny side streets lined with flowers, historic houses and the odd water fountain - it was also incredibly quiet with very few other people around.

At the top of the hill was a small plaza called Place Du Château that felt like the centre of town. Restaurants, bars and a castle overlooked the surrounding countryside and hills and the sound of children playing nearby filled the air. As day turned to evening the party music started and the atmosphere changed to one of celebration and dancing - a live band played in the plaza and all the locals seemingly came out to join in.

My visit to Cagnes Sur Mer was unplanned but sometimes they’re the best experiences - no expectations and learning about the wonderful French Riviera the old fashioned way!

Cros de Cagnes in Cagnes-sur-Mer, French Riviera

Cagnes-sur-Mer coastline covers 3,5 kilometres of long pebbled beach. It is these pebbles that give the Mediterranean Sea its deep shade of blue. The water temperature is so mild, that it is possible to bathe in the sea all year round ! The six new private beaches offer the additional high-quality services : restaurants, sun-bed rental, parasols...

The Cros-de-Cagnes is, first of all, a recreational seaside resort offering relaxation, beach activities, water sports (to practice all year round) and a wide range of welcoming local shops and restaurants.

Originally an artisan fishing village, Cros-de-Cagnes evolved into a modern seaside resort dedicated to sea-lovers. Even though today water-based recreation is its primary attraction, the fishing tradition is still alive.

The modernity mixes up with tradition around the picturesque fishing port, the yellow ochre couloured chapel, the pointu boats, along the streets named after flowers and St Pierre's square with its boules players.

The road along the seashore has been completely renovated and the new Promenade de la Plage has been a total success - a place to discover and enjoy.

Despite the evolution of the « village like state of mind », the Cros-de-Cagnes kept its traditions and famous fishing port. The village is now characterised by its juxtaposition of modernity and traditions. The Ancient port is being kept as it has always been but the nautical activities practicable all year long, beaches restaurants and commercial activities bring dynamism and modernity to this historical place.
