What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. 10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.

In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.

When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Swadlincote is a town in Derbyshire, England, close to the borders with Leicestershire and Staffordshire. It is located approximately 5 miles southeast of Burton-upon-Trent, 5 miles northwest of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and 12.5 miles due south of Derby. It is an unparished area in the South Derbyshire district, of which it is the largest town and administrative centre.
Swadlincote consists of the settlements of Swadlincote itself plus the districts of Newhall and Midway, and the contiguous suburban villages of Church Gresley and Woodville. The village of Castle Gresley is situated less than 2 miles (3 km) to the southwest and the community of Albert Village lies 1.5 miles (2 km) to the south, just within Leicestershire.
Swadlincote's name is derived from the Old English Swartlings Cottas, Swartling being a man's name and cottas meaning cottages. Past forms of the name include Sivardingescote and Swartlincote. Swadlincote residents often shorten its name to Swad. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Swadlincote as a small manor. It was part of the parish of Gresley (latterly Church Gresley) until the 19th century.
Swadlincote has a moderate-sized town centre, typical of those in the Midlands, containing national chain stores including Boots and small local businesses. It had a branch of Somerfield before the Co-operative Group took over that chain in 2009. Swadlincote had a Woolworths until the chain ceased trading in 2009. Alworths took over Woolworths' former Swadlincote branch but this too subsequently closed. The opening of a large Morrisons store on Coppice Side has been blamed for the closure of a number of small independent shops in the town. Shops that lined West Street and High Street from 1901 disappeared by the early 21st century. Hepworth Retail Park is a fairly modern development which contains a restaurant, cinema and various shops.
Swadlincote is near the junction of the A514 (Derby to A444) and A511 (Burton-upon-Trent to Ashby-de-la-Zouch) roads. In 1804 the Ashby Canal was opened. Its northern terminus was at Moira, Leicestershire and it built tramways to carry coal and ceramics from Swadlincote and elsewhere to the canal for shipment. The Midland Railway opened its Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line through Gresley in 1845 and opened Gresley railway station to serve the area. The company later built a branch line through Swadlincote itself and neighbouring Woodville. In 1947 the passenger services were withdrawn from both lines, and British Railways closed Gresley railway station in 1964.
Swadlincote is served by the Arriva Midlands and Midland Classic bus companies. Swadlincote is also on National Cycle Network Route 63. Although currently under development, the route is signed from Civic Way through to Church Gresley via Maurice Lea Park with onward links to the heart of the National Forest. The main attractions within the boundaries of Swadlincote are the local parks such as Maurice Lea at Church Gresley and Eureka, the Green Bank Leisure Centre, the large dry ski slope and the '50s American Diner, the largest American diner in the United Kingdom, all within reach of the town centre. The town has one museum: Sharpe's Pottery Centre, a visitor centre that tells people of the town's pottery heritage. There is a café and the town's Tourist Information Centre. Gresley F.C., formerly Gresley Rovers, is a semi-professional football team based at Moat Street, Church Gresley.

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a town on the River Trent in East Staffordshire, England, close to the border with Derbyshire. The demonym for residents of the town is Burtonian.
Burton is known for brewing. The town originally grew up around Burton Abbey. Burton Bridge was also the site of two battles, in 1322 when Edward II defeated the rebel Earl of Lancaster and 1643 when royalists captured the town during the First English Civil War. William Lord Paget and his descendants were responsible for extending the manor house within the abbey grounds and facilitating the extension of the River Trent Navigation to Burton. Burton grew into a busy market town by the early modern period. The town is served by Burton-on-Trent railway station.
Burton is about 109 miles (175 km) north west of London, about 30 miles north east of Birmingham, the UK's second largest city and about 23 miles east of the county town Stafford. It is at the easternmost border of the county of Staffordshire with Derbyshire, its suburbs and the course of the River Trent forming part of the county boundary. Burton is closer to Derby (approx. 12 miles) than it is to Stafford. It is also near the south-eastern terminus of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Burton lies within the northern boundary of the National Forest.
The town's connection with the brewing industry is celebrated in The Burton Cooper a bronze sculpture, by James Walter Butler. It was commissioned in 1977 and depicts a local craftsman making a barrel. It originally stood opposite the market and - despite opposition from many townspeople - was moved to its present location inside the Cooper's Square Shopping Centre in 1994.
The National Brewery Centre (previously Coors Visitor Centre & the Museum of Brewing and before that the Bass Museum of Brewing), which celebrates the town's brewing heritage is its biggest tourist attraction. Claymills Pumping Station on the north side of Burton is a restored Victorian sewage pumping station, adjacent to the modern sewage works. Until 2006, one of Burton's most distinguishable landmarks was the Drakelow Power Station, just south of Burton on the opposite side of the River Trent. The cooling towers have since been demolished. Finney's post is part of an ornate mediaeval oak post, which once stood at the corner of the Market Place and High Street.
Burton now lies on both sides of the River Trent. Historically, there was just one bridge over the river, Burton Old bridge, and there was a small ferry that operated from time immemorial. This was eventually replaced by the Ferry Bridge. The town is served by Burton-on-Trent railway station, which is accessed from the bridge on Borough Road.

Burton-on-Trent Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located roughly halfway between Birmingham and Nottingham, in the county of Staffordshire, is the town of Burton-on-Trent.
Burton proudly boasts over a thousand years of experience in the brewing industry. This allegedly originated in a benedictine abbey, circa 1004 AD. The first record of brewing after the dissolution of the monasteries comes from 1708, when Benjamin Printon founded a small brewery. Many notable names followed, including Worthington's, Bass, Marston's, Ind Coope's and Boddingtons to name just a few.
In 1712 George Hayne created the Trent Navigation - basically a means of making the River Trent navigable by big boats. What this meant is that ale from Burton-on-Trent could be transported all the way to the River Humber (as the Trent is a tributary of the Humber), where it reached Hull before being exported overseas. This secured Burton's role as a powerhouse of beer production. In 1777 the Trent and Mersey Canal was completed, allowing access to further domestic trades routes.
The 19th century saw the arrival of the railway in 1839 with a line operated by Midland Railway. By 1880 there were over 30 breweries in Burton-on-Trent, with around one quarter of all beer sold in Britain produced here. By 1928 Burton's breweries had fallen to eight. By 1980 only Bass, Ind Coope's and Marston's remained. In 1922 Branston Pickle was first made in the suburban village of the same name, Branston, 2 miles southwest of Burton town centre.
Today the only remaining independent brewer in Burton-on-Trent is Burton Bridge Brewery. The imposing building we see at the end of the video is owned by Molson Coors Brewing Company, a North American merger who bought out Bass in 2002.
Finally it should be noted that some prominent outlets call the town Burton-upon-Trent, including Google and Wikipedia. Whereas others including Royal Mail and National Rail refer to it as Burton-on-Trent (I omitted the hyphens until now for SEO reasons). I've always assumed the latter, but if any Burtonians are reading this, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments on the two different names!

Sinai Park - The Sinai Park site, due to its elevated strategic position, has a history dating back to Roman times and before. The hilltop site enjoyed commanding views over the Trent Valley in both directions making it an ideal outpost being mid-way on a day’s march from Derby to Lichfield.
The Saxons also used the location as a stronghold and, in medieval times, the fortified manor of the de Schobenhale family, dominated the area. A large house preceded the existing one but the most evident feature from this period is the 14th Century moat, dated by one source to 1334, which pre-dates the house and has special importance. The de Schobenhales gave Sinai Park to the monks of Burton Abbey in 1004. At the time, this was one of the most significant monastic seats in England.
In 1334, Abbot William Bromley of Burton Abbey gave five days indulgence from the bloodletting at Schobenhale Park with increased allowance of bread and beer for convalescence and recuperation. The origin of ‘Sinai’ is thought to be ‘saignée’, the French word for bloodletting and nothing to do with the Biblical ‘Mount Sinai’ due to its elevation. On a 1410 map, it is however, marked as ‘Seyne Park’.....

Current Town Hall - The Burton Municipal Borough Council was formed in 1878 and initially used the old Town Hall which stood in the Market Place. This building was however, unserviceable and was demolished in 1883, leaving Council meetings to be conducted in the back room of the nearby Angel public house!
In 1891, Lord Burton offered the Saint Paul’s Institute and the Liberal Club buildings to the Borough as a much needed Town Hall. It is shown below with various stages of development around it.....

Drakelowe Hall - Drakelow is first recorded as Dracan Hlawe in a grant of land made by King Edward in 942 A.D. The place-name means “Dragon’s Mound”, indicating a burial place with a guardian spirit.
No trace of an early burial was found until January, 1962, when workmen with a mechanical digger were excavating gravel to make concrete for the construction of ‘C’ power station.
The site was in an orchard adjoining the former Warren Farmhouse and the “find” consisted of a small jar or bowl, globular in shape, with a base diameter of one and a half inches, and a height of two and a half inches. Made of well-fired grey-brown ware, it had a stamped decoration of horse shoes around the neck with incised chevrons and square stamps enclosing a cross on the body.
This small pot is a good example of a vessel containing a votive offering and is usually associated with a skeleton, but of the latter there was no trace.
The date of this vessel has been fixed at c550 A.D. and it is an interesting example of Friesian-Anglo-Saxon design. It is now in Derby Museum.
