Bukit Mertajam is growing on me. The hotel was a mistake but my morning walk through this little interesting town on the mainland of Penang here in Malaysia is definitely nice and full of surprises. I can tell that there are no tourists here, even under normal circumstances. Now, with the Covid-19 pandemic, we are definitely the only tourists, at least the only Matt Salles. Join me for a walk through downtown and the very lively market in the morning. Ah yes, and let's have some breakfast.

Bukit Mertajam derived its name from the Mertajam Hill, which means pointed hill in Malay. This was said to be a native reference to the geography of the area, where the Mertajam Hill forms the highest outcrop.
Bukit Mertajam had been part of the Hindu-Buddhist Bujang Valley civilization, which ruled over what is now Kedah up to the 6th century AD. A megalith at Cherok Tok Kun, discovered in 1845, contains Pali inscriptions which alluded to the presence of a Hindu-Buddhist polity in the region between the 5th and 6th centuries.
Whilst founded in the 19th century as an agricultural area, Bukit Mertajam also evolved into a transportation hub, following the completion of a railway line towards Perai at the end of the century. To this day, its railway station remains a major Malayan Railway station within Seberang Perai.

The Mengkuang Dam, the biggest dam in Penang, has a storage capacity of 23,639 million litres of water.
Mengkuang Dam not only provide water for the state and surrounding areas, it is also a splendid recreational spot featuring landscaped gardens, and sitting benches along the perimeter of the dam. It also has facilities for both recreational and watersports like jogging tracks and walking trails. The dam area is often used by the locals for their morning and late afternoon jogging, and upon arrangement with the authority in charge of the dam, one can also enjoy kayaking here.
Close by is the 37ha Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest, forming a majestic backdrop for the dam. Uphill trails in the area attract mountain bikers for the rewarding views from atop, including the majestic view of Mengkuang Dam.
Mengkuang Dam is also one of the venues for the annual Penang International Dragon Boat Festival. A lively afffair, the festival is a fiesta of colour and noise, in which traditionally-built boats race through the waters of this dam, the boats are cheered on by enthusiastic spectators. The race begins with a slow beating of the drums by the helmsmen. The beat increases steadily, going faster and faster, and then rising to a crescendo as the boats cross the finish line. The ornate and beautifully painted 'dragons' on the boats' prows add to the gaiety of the festival.
