France: The town of Briare

Briare is a commune in the Loiret department in north-central France.
The town is situated at the extremity of the Briare Canal, which unites the river Loire and its lateral canal with the Loing and so with the Seine. The lateral canal of the Loire crosses the Loire near Briare by the Briare aqueduct which is 662 m long.
The Saint-Etienne church, built between 1890 and 1895 in the romano-Byzantine style, is characterized by the remarkable mosaic decorations of Eugène Grasset.

The Briare aquaduct will be subject of one of my next videos.

A cruise on the Loire Canal

The Canal Latéral à la Loire is 121 miles long and flows from the town of Digoin to the small town of Briare. It starts in the Bourgogne region all the way to the Canal de Briare in the region called Centre-Val de Loire. The fascinating canal bridge of Briare with its imposing metal frame, spanning the Loire river, was created by Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the famous Eiffel Tower.

Hotel barge Deborah is one of CroisiEurope’s newest barges and offers smart and distinctive furnishings throughout her main deck and cabins. She has eleven twin bedded cabins, each having outside views, integral air conditioning, TV, radio and a safe, and a private en-suite shower-room. One of the cabins is on the main deck, avoiding stairs, and is equipped for a guest of limited mobility.
Hotel barge Deborah cruises an exceptionally calm and peaceful itinerary on the Canal de Briare between the Loire Valley and the Sancerre wine region.

randonnée ( le pont du-canal -de- Briare)

Le Pont du Canal-de -Briare
x

The Canal du Midi is a 240 kilometres long canal in Southern France.
Originally named the Canal royal en Languedoc and renamed by French revolutionaries to Canal du Midi in 1789, the canal was at the time considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century.
The canal connects the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and along with the 193 kilometres long Canal de Garonne forms the Canal des Deux Mers, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
The canal runs from the city of Toulouse down to the Étang de Thau near the Mediterranean.
Strictly speaking, Canal du Midi refers to the portion initially constructed from Toulouse to the Mediterranean - the Deux-Mers canal project aimed to link together several sections of navigable waterways to join the Mediterranean and the Atlantic:
first the Canal du Midi, then the Garonne which was more or less navigable between Toulouse and Bordeaux, then the Garonne Lateral Canal built later, and finally the Gironde estuary after Bordeaux.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert authorized the start of work by royal edict in October, 1666, with the aim of developing the wheat trade, under the supervision of Pierre-Paul Riquet, and construction lasted from 1666 to 1681, during the reign of Louis XIV.
The Canal du Midi is one of the oldest canals of Europe still in operation (the prototype being the Briare Canal).
The canal is a long ribbon of water stretching through the landscape and attracts many animal species.
Several species of fish such as bream breed in the canal, and others reproduce in its feeding rivers and spend part of their life in the canal.
The canal is also a very vegetated place. In the beginning Pierre-Paul Riquet planted trees to stabilize the banks of the canal especially where it overlooked the surrounding lands.
In the 18th century the trees planted along the canal become a source of income.
So mulberries were planted for rearing silkworms.
Then, with the end of the silk culture in 1772, the mulberry trees were replaced by the poplar from Italy which was the most productive wood.
The Canal du Midi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The Ultra Deluxe 8 Passenger Hotel Barge Renaissance - Luxury Barge Cruises in France

Luxury hotel barge Renaissance has been designed to carry her guests in ultimate luxury along the Canal de Briare, France’s oldest canal, completed in 1642 and steeped in history on a cruise route that features elegant châteaux, small countryside villages and the famed wine-growing region of Sancerre.

She is a very spacious hotel barge and the beautifully appointed saloon with its wooden beams, classic dining furniture and artwork, invokes the atmosphere of a classic French manor house. The comfortable leather sofas and hand-built bar where you can enjoy your pre-dinner aperitif, add to the feeling of onboard opulence.

The ‘Renaissance mood’ extends to the four very generously sized twin- or double-bedded bedroom suites, (approx. average 250sq ft including en suite), each one fully air-conditioned and complemented by a large en suite shower room.

Outside, the large forward deck includes a covered roof extension with a circular table for alfresco dining, comfortable hardwood sun loungers and a heated spa pool.

With her refined onboard ambience, Renaissance is the perfect vessel on which to cruise a historic canal and experience the splendour of landmarks en route, including Gustav’s Eiffels’s aqueduct across the mighty River Loire.

CRUISE HIGHLIGHTS

- Tour of the privately-owned Château de La Bussière, including a cooking demonstration using seasonal produce from the gardens
- 7-lock flight at Rogny-Les-Sept-Ecluses, a national historic monument

WHAT IS HOTEL BARGING?

Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.

This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.

Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!

European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.

The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.

Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Deluxe Barge Meanderer in Upper Loire, France
