Top 10 Places in Wales to Visit | United Kingdom

Top 10 Places in Wales to Visit.

The smallest of mainland Britain's component countries, Wales offers many wonderful reasons to visit. The south includes cosmopolitan Cardiff, famous for its magnificent castle and a good base from which to begin exploring the rest of the country.

With its splendid shopping arcades and many well-reserved historic buildings, it's a city with plenty of places to visit and things to do. Wales shares a great deal of history with the rest of Great Britain, but the rugged beauty of its landscapes and the open nature of its inhabitants make it a distinctly unique travel destination.

For first-time visitors, the most obvious difference between Wales and the other lands in the United Kingdom is the tongue-twisting Welsh language. While everyone speaks English, part of the fun of visiting Wales is learning a few phrases of one of the oldest languages in Europe.

Number 10. Aberystwyth
Known by the locals as “Aber,” Aberystwyth is an historic university town situated on the west coast of Wales. With 7,000 students attending school in Aberystwyth each year, it’s no surprise that the town is also a popular holiday destination for young people as evidenced by the city’s more than 50 pubs. The seafront features charming Victorian architecture with a wide promenade where visitors can sit and soak up the sun.

Number 9. Caernarfon
Located in northern Wales, the city of Caernarfon is best known for its 13th-century castle, which is considered one of the best preserved fortresses in all of Wales. Although the castle was built as a royal palace as well as a military stronghold for Edward I, the inner buildings and apartments have all but disappeared.

Number 8. St. David's Cathedral
Located in the City of St. David’s in Pembrokeshire county, St. David’s Cathedral is a beautiful example of religious architecture in the Middle Ages. Construction for the existing cathedral was begun in the 1180s using purple-colored sandstone.

Number 7. Brecon Beacons National Park
Named after the pair of nearly 900-meter hills situated in the heart of the park, Brecon Beacons features a landscape of rolling hills, rocky river valleys, grasslands and water meadows. The park is dotted with archeological remnants of Wales’ long history too, including Neolithic cairns, Bronze Age standing stones, Iron Age forts and crumbling Norman castles.

Number 6. Cardiff
Located in the southeast corner of Wales, Cardiff became the country’s capital in 1955 and launched a number of projects to improve the ancient port city shortly thereafter. The 11th-century castle gives visitors a great introduction to Welsh history, and a climb to the top of the keep offers stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside.

Number 5. Conwy
An ancient town with a rich history, Conwy is located in North Wales on the Conwy Estuary near the forests of Snowdonia. The dark-stoned fortress of Conwy Castle dominates the cityscape. Built in the 1280s by Edward I, the castle’s mammoth curtain walls and eight round towers remain intact and imposing.

Number 4. Pembrokeshire Coast
Home to the only coastal national park in Wales, Pembrokeshire county encompasses the country’s southwestern peninsula and offshore islands. Visited by more than four million people each year, the national park is best known for the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which winds for 300 km along cliff tops overlooking the craggy shoreline. The area is famed for its wildlife too. Seals bask on the rocks below and hundreds of species of birds soar overhead.

Number 3. Llandudno
Nestled between the limestone headlands of Great Orme and Little Orme in North Wales, Llandudno is the country’s largest seaside resort and arguably its most charming. Built during the 1950s by the wealthy Mostyn family, Llandudno has all the attributes that wealthy Victorians looked for in a summer resort, including a promenade stretched along the town’s northern beach with a 700-meter pier jutting into the bay at the end.

Number 2. Snowdonia
The mountains of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales are one of the most popular places to visit in Wales. Few of Snowdonia’s peaks top 900 meters, but their steeply wooded slopes lend them a heightened sense of drama. They also provide a stunning backdrop to the park’s estuaries, lakes, rivers, slate mines and villages.

Number 1. Anglesey
Separated from mainland Wales by the mile-wide Menai Strait - spanned by the Menai Suspension Bridge the Isle of Anglesey is home to a number of quaint, small fishing villages sprinkled along its more than 100 miles of attractive coastline. best attractions in wales

Best Places to Visit in South Wales | UK Adventure Guide

South Wales is home to incredible places to visit, from stunning waterfalls to awesome hikes. In this adventure guide I share with you the best places to visit in South Wales.

South Wales is home to tons of incredible castles and my two favirotes that I think are worth a visit is Carreg Cennen and White Castle. If you like wild swimming then the best places to visit in South Wales would be the two Blue Lagoons, one in Pantygasseg, Canyon and the other . Both are stunning wild swimming spots and one of them you can even cliff dive.

The South of Wales is also home to lots of awesome waterfalls and in this guide I share with you my favorites. First being the Four Waterfalls Walk and the other two being Sgwd Gwladys and Henrhyd Falls.

Finally on the best places to visit in South Wales I included my favourite hiking spot found in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Llyn y Fan Fach is a lesser known South Wales hike with amazing views and a lake perfect for wild swimming!

These are my picks for the best places to visit in South Wales. I hope enjoy this Wales Travel guide and make sure to let me know if you would like to see more South Wales guides!

12 Best Towns to Live in Wales

What are the best towns in Wales? We do not get to hear a lot about cities and towns in Wales, not as much as we do about those in England and Scotland. However, whenever the towns to live in the UK are ranked, Welsh towns find their way in. That inevitably reveals the best places to live in Wales. Sorting through the ranking, we are able to isolate the 12 best towns to live in Wales. Please bear in mind that our ranking relies to a large extent, but not entirely, on the most recent ranking of towns in Britain in the marketing report by the property finder company, Garrington’s. Factors considered are employment, green spaces, physical environment, quality of living, and architecture or heritage.

12. Narberth, Pembrokeshire
Just two years ago, Narberth was among the 8 Welsh villages and towns named the best places to live in the UK. It actually tops that ranking. Two years later, things are only getting better. A reputable online mortgage broker gives the town's average property price as 164,950 pounds. You can’t rush through your shopping in this beautiful small town. There are a lot of good and uncommon things to be bought and at reasonable prices there. On the high streets of this town are antique shops, vintage and craft outlets, award-winning cafes, delicatessens featuring local produce, restaurants and pubs among others. It also has a museum and romantic castle ruins. It has very good schools and great transport links.

11. Usk, Monmouthshire
Usk, a town and community in Monmouthshire, stands out in Wales. This town located 16 kilometers northeast of Newport is on the River Usk and is spanned by an arched stone bridge toward the western entrance to the town. This is a town with well-designed homes and bursting with community spirit.
We perfectly agree with the Sunday Times’ expert judges ranking Usk among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. Truly, on a more important note, a look at the air quality, school standards, broadband speed, and transport in this town will necessitate its inclusion here. It also ranks so well for green spaces, community culture, and the health of the attractive high street.
10. Glanaman, Carmarthenshire
Glanaman is another town with an overall high rank among the best towns to live in Wales. Out of 1372 places ranked in the United Kingdom, it ranks 71st. In the same ranking, we find it in the second position for natural beauty. For the quality of life rank, it holds the 200th position while its architectural beauty places it in the 796th position. As for green rank, it finds a place in number 555.
This town has a strong historical link to the ancient coal mining industry. Sited in the valley of the River Amman, Glanaman’s average family home cost is less than 350,000 pounds.
9. Blaenavon, Torfaen
Blaenavon, a town in Torfaen, is another Welsh town steeped in history. It was at one point the world giant among the important producers of iron, coal, and steel.
On the quality of life, it was the 69th best place to live in the UK while for natural beauty, it’s in the enviable third position. It’s also in the impressive 7th position for architectural beauty. The average family home costs less than 350,000 pounds. It would have ranked higher on this list but for its poor ranking for green space.
8. Brecon, Powys
Brecon in Powys, another market town, is also among the loveliest towns to live in Wales. The town is reputable for its annual scintillating jazz festival and its gorgeous cathedral is situated just within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

12 Best Places to Live in Wales

What are the best places to live in Wales? We have taken our time to access all, yes we mean it, all cities, towns, and villages in Wales for moments like this. Out of them all, we have come up with the 12 best places to live in Wales in this video. The places mentioned here have certain unique characteristics that stand them out among all the other places in the region. If you carefully consider the most credible rankings about Wales, you would find these places among the most loved towns in Wales. You will find most of them even on our own list of the best towns to live in Wales. We encourage you to see those videos to complement whatever you are going to see here.
12. Blaenavon, Torfaen
A good place to search for accommodation is Blaenavon, a town and community in Torfaen County. The home of award-winning mystery writer Dorothy Simpson, several famous rugby players, and Olympic athletes is high on a hillside on the Afon Lwyd source. It’s one of the Welsh best places to live. Thanks to the efforts being made by many thriving community groups who have served to improve the town. One of them is Future Blaenavon, whose efforts have led to the creation of a community garden down the town. In 2000, parts of Blaenavon were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place occupying 33 square kilometers has several attractions, events and dance performances.
11. Brecon, Powys
We are sure those who know Wales too well would be disappointed if Brecon, just like Kidwelly, Abergavenny, Cardigan, Barmouth, and Tenby, is missing on this list. This town in and community in Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales alongside its peers has featured in many good rankings and its omission here can’t be explained. For instance, they have been listed among the best towns to live in Wales, the best small towns to live in Wales, the most loved towns in Wales, and even the best small towns to live in Britain. Whatever has given it such good reckonings must find a slot for it among the best places to live in Wales.
10. St Davids
St Davids is likely the only city found here. Also known as St Davids and the Cathedral Close or St David's, the community is the smallest geographical area granted city status in the UK by population and by urban area. The city, lying on the River Alun, is the final resting place of Saint David, Wales's patron saint. It was obviously named after him. The link to this patron is a powerful reason why things are going well for this one of the small cities.
9. Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
Just like Brecon and other places mentioned earlier, Abergavenny, a market town and community in Monmouthshire, well deserves its slot here. What we can’t be sure of is whether you would want the town in this 9th position. Okay, you’re free to let us know if it deserves a higher ranking. In any case, we all can agree that the town approximately 10 kilometers from the border with England has beautiful scenery, locally delicious food, and appealing ecotourism.
8. Llandudno, Conwy
Llandudno is another seaside resort, town, and community. Located in Conwy County Borough, it’s on the Creuddyn peninsula protruding into the Irish Sea. This is a town of battlements, boats, and birds with an atmospheric seaside town having charm and rebellion in buckets and spades.

Brecon Beacon's National Park, South Wales, Visit Britain - Unravel Travel TV

Brecon Beacon's National Park in South Wales covers five hundred and nineteen square miles and is of course centered on the Brecon Beacon range of hills. The park was established in 1957 and it straddles some of the finest landscapes in the British Isles; with wild hills, lakes and water falls to explore. But to many visitors it's the park's remoteness which is its greatest charm, it's a real taste of the great outdoors. Recently the western half of the park has been designated a Geopark -- a place renowned for its geology. There are only half a dozen of these Geoparks in the whole of United Kingdom. Mining here was once an economic mainstay. Iron and coal were taken from these hills to help fire the industrial revolution. A feature of the Geopark are its waterfalls, but not all are above ground. This one which falls for forty feet is actually five hundred feet beneath the surface in a complex of caves at Dan-yr-Ogof. One of the caves is called 'Cathedral Cave' a truly massive cavern. These caves formed through the erosion of limestone by water over centuries. At one stage this systems of caves was totally filled by water. Once the water level fell and the cave was filled with air formations like stalactites and stalagmites began forming within the caves. The caves are an important feature of the geo park and are a must see on a trip to the Brecon Beacons. The life size model dinosaurs on the surrounding hillsides add an extra dimension to a visit here. The models help to explain in dinosaurs terms how geological time evolves and how that in turn shaped the landscape we see today. They seem right at home in the rugged beauty of this unique National Park of the Brecon Beacons.
