Louisiana’s Famous Crawfish Festival | Breaux Bridge, LA

Louisiana is a state composed of many diverse cultures scattered across its geography. Approaching towards the south-central reaches of the Pelican State, one will eventually encounter the culture of the Cajuns, a group with a rich heritage going back hundreds of years in America. Ever since being exiled from Atlantic Canada (formerly known as Acadia) in the mid-1700's, the Cajun people found refuge and remained around the bayous and wetlands of coastal Louisiana (not yet part of the US), thriving as an independent series of communities and maintaining a French-derivative culture quite distinct from the rest of Anglo-influenced America. For the Cajuns, a traditional subsistence revolved around harvesting the creature they most often found throughout this landscape–crawfish. Not just was this crawfish a source of food, but it also became the key to allow these people to continue a humble lifestyle, in an otherwise harsh environment. Today we celebrate the lasting culture of Acadiana, as this region is also called, by attending the famed Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. Drawing tourists from all around the world, it wouldn't be the iconic festival it's known as without the vibrant traditional Zydeco music performances, spicy Lousiana food, classic carnival amusements for the kiddos, and of course, a crawfish eating competition that is sure to wildly excite a crowd. Are you ready to handle the spirit and energy of Louisiana's Cajun Country as we experience the greatest festival dedicated to a crustacean, today the centerpiece symbol for a people and state altogether?

An EPIC Louisiana Road Trip - Alligators, Crawfish and Swamp Tours in Southern USA

We travelled to the Southern USA to go on a fun-filled Louisiana road trip, hitting up Lake Charles, Lafayette and the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin. The plan was to find alligators, try a crawfish boil, check out a Cajun jam and explore the bayous, but we found so much more. The Southern hospitality of the United States is unreal and we were welcomed with open arms everywhere we went.

Kicking off the Louisiana road trip in Lake Charles we checked out the Pintail Wildlife Drive where we found dozens of alligators, drove to the Gulf of Mexico, explored downtown Lake Charles and went kayaking in the bayous with the legendary Sarge of Lake Area Adventures.

Next we sampled the rum at Bayou Rum Distillery before going to Henderson to go on an amazing Atchafalaya Basin swamp tour. We jumped on a boat with McGee's Swamp Tours, who we highly recommend!

Then it was onto Lafayette, with the beautiful Maison Mouton plantation accommodation and easy access to the Tabasco Factory and Jungle Gardens.

We wrapped our trip with a crawfish boil to try the famous local cuisine and danced the night away with a Cajun jam music session.

Our road trip in Louisiana was a wonderful introduction to this part of the USA. Thanks to Travel South USA, Vacaay and Louisiana Tourism for showing us around.
