S1 – Ep 360 – Winburg – Incredible History with a Profound Sense of Connection!

Our visit to Winburg was an incredible experience filled with a blend of historical charm. Arriving in the town, we bought a delightful meal before the sun dipped below the horizon, preventing us from exploring the town fully. Our lodging, nestled on a farm a short distance beyond the town's borders, was a true gem that held echoes of a rich heritage. The farm's allure was steeped in history. The next morning, we embarked on a journey to uncover some of the treasures of the town. The awe-inspiring churches and the elegant old stone buildings stood as testaments to Winburg's architectural legacy. Driving through the wide streets, we caught sight of endearing houses that seemed to have sprung from a storybook. Our adventure led us to the remarkable Voortrekker Monument with a great story. A majestic structure that, even though its gates were closed, left an indelible impression on us. The grandeur of the Rietfontein Dam left us breathless. Exploring the time-honoured graveyard unveiled a glimpse into the past, with one of the oldest graves we've encountered during our travels thus far. The captivating history of Winburg wove a tapestry of intrigue, enriching our visit with a profound sense of connection to the past. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #winburg

S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

Like Heilbron and Kroonstad in the ORC, it was located in the maize-growing belt of the highveld, but on the north bank of the Vaal River, in the Transvaal, sloping down to the river. It was already in existence when the first civilian inspection took place on 19 February 1901 but it probably started about September 1900 (Dr. Kendal Franks dated it from December 1900). G.W. Goodwin, then chief superintendent of the Transvaal camps, reported in February 1901 that the people were of a ‘superior class’ and appeared in good health, happy and contented. If this was the case, it may have been due to the first superintendent, Captain Bentinck, a remarkably capable man. But the people themselves, many of them employees and tenants of Sammy Marks’s Vereeniging Estates Company, had benefited from the burgeoning markets of the goldfields and were probably relatively affluent. Dr. Kendal Franks, who visited the camp in September 1901, thought them ‘a superior class of burgher, better educated and more advanced in the manners and arts of civilization’. Their tents were often well furnished, some with carpets, and the inmates were active, sewing, making jam tarts and the like. One benefit from the association with the Vereeniging Estates Company was the lavish supply of coal so the inmates were never short of fuel. Like the wiser superintendents, Bentinck had immediately adopted the ration scale which included meat and food was always fairly plentiful and good.-Reference:Website:-

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!

Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

MôRESON RANCH, VREDE

Weekend breakaway to the free state plains, visiting the Lion park, Môreson Ranch, just outside the quiet town of Vrede in October 2020. Worth the visit, but maybe only once.
Definitely stay in the bigger unit with bar and pool table.

Thornveld Runway Visit

I flew from Base in Cato Ridge, Kwa-Zulu Natal, S.A. to a nearby neighboring airfield Orange Farm, the home of Durban Skydive Centre, for us to do some vlogging video for The Bateleurs - Volunteers Flying for the Environment.
We wanted a 'bushy' African backdrop and Orange Farm was great for us to bank a basket of video material for later vlogging intros/outros.

S1 – Ep 359 – Theunissen – Captivating Sights and a Mix of Emotions!

Our visit to Theunissen in the Free State was filled with captivating sights and a mix of emotions. As we ventured into the town, we were immediately greeted by the awe-inspiring presence of a magnificent steam locomotive. Its imposing form stood as a testament to the town's rich history. One notable highlight was the train station, even though its active days seemed to be behind it. It was heartening to witness the presence of diligent security guards, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the town's heritage and infrastructure. Moving forward, our exploration led us to the Voortrekker Memorial, an important landmark situated in front of the Town Hall. This significant piece of history was being carefully safeguarded by dedicated security personnel as well. The sense of reverence and appreciation for the past was palpable, and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to wander through this meaningful space. As we continued our journey through Theunissen, the local school caught our eye. Its expansive grounds and impressive facilities were indicative of a community that prioritises education and values its youth. As our visit drew to a close, we encountered the town's sports fields, a stark contrast to the vibrant memories they likely held. These fields, which once echoed with the laughter and cameraderie of games, now remained untouched, a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of time. Our time in Theunissen was a blend of admiration for its historical significance, a tinge of sadness for its neglected spaces, and an appreciation for the enduring spirit of its people. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #theunissen

Women's Monument to (25,000!) Anglo-Boer War Concentration Camp Victims (Bloemfontein, South Africa)

(Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa)

The first concentration camps were in ~1900 and almost exclusively White-on-White. Did you know that? Neither did I.

In Bloemfontein South Africa, just 20-30 years after their defeat/surrender in the Anglo-Boer War, the (mostly Dutch-derived, the first boat-full of them having arrived in 1652, ~250 years prior!) Afrikaner Boer (meaning farmer) people still living there set up this Women's Monument to remember the (mostly) women and kids who died of starvation, thirst and/or sickness in British-run concentration camps. (I s$%t you not!)

See the Boer fighters were organized into essentially-guerrilla commando militias. And they kept kicking the butts of the British who out-numbered and out-resourced them 10-to-1.

But while they were away out butt-kicking someplace, the wives were back on the farms taking care of things. So the British said screw this, and just burned/dynamited the farms, killed the livestock, and took the wives and kids hostage in these concentration camps.

This unplugged the Boer fighters provisions-wise, but that wasn't really the whole plan.

Taking the wives and kids hostage in this way, and passive-aggressively allowing them to die-off in bureaucratic fashion (Oh dang, we ran out of food for the prisoners again. --sound familiar?) not just humiliated the men emotionally and spiritually (worse than unbelievers, right?), but of course gave them dang good reasons to give up and surrender, and quickly, which they did.

You might just have to agree that genocide worked. But try not to think about it.

No wait. I mean: YES PLEASE DO try to think about it!

(And what if they'd thought of this when fighting General Washington and his people in the Revolutionary War, hmm?)
