About Montserrat: Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about 16 km (10 mi) long and 11 km (7 mi) wide, with roughly 40 km (25 mi) of coastline. It is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrats Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the islands population was forced to flee, primarily to the United Kingdom, leaving fewer than 1,200 people on the island in 1997 (rising to nearly 5,000 by 2016). The volcanic activity continues, mostly affecting the vicinity of Plymouth... In 2015, it was announced that planning would begin on a new town and port at Little Bay on the northwest coast of the island. While additional plans proceeded, the centre of government and businesses was moved to Brades. After a number of delays, including Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in early 2020, in June 2022, ground was broken on the Little Bay Port Development Project, a £28 million project funded by the UK and the Caribbean Development Bank. MONTSERRAT ~ Statue Rock ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

Montserrat is one incredibly beautiful mountainous Caribbean island, part of the Lesser Antilles chain and a British Overseas Territory. Sadly Its Soufrière Hills volcano first erupted in the 1990s, causing devastation to the southern part of the island which is now an exclusion zone. The north part of the island is largely unaffected, and has unique black sand beaches, coral reefs, breath taking cliffs, shoreline caves and a new city.

Visitors are politely told that Montserrat is not a volcano; it has a volcano and assured that the north part of the Island remains entirely safe, with the Soufrière Hills volcano is under round-the-clock monitoring by a MVO “Montserrat volcano observatory”. As is often the way in the aftermath of disaster, the close-knit community has forged stronger bonds than ever. Crime is a rarity, front doors and vehicles are unlocked, with the PEOPLE making the island magical. For first-time visitors to the Caribbean island of Montserrat, some of the local vocabulary evokes Geology 101. Words like “pyroclastic flow,” “seismic” and “dome collapse” pop up often in conversations with native islanders and longtime residents.

There is much to do in Montserrat other that visiting volcano devastation exclusion zones, there is epic nature hiking trails, black sand beaches, even a nice hike that will take you to the only white sand beach on the island. Drop an email to Sunny Lea, he is a wealth of local knowledge and is an amazing tour guide.

Some Facts About Montserrat:

1. Montserrat is a volcanic island in the South-Eastern Caribbean.
2. Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano, which had been dormant for centuries, became active in July 1995, erupted, and buried the capital city of Plymouth, which is considered a modern-day Pompeii. The most recent eruption of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano was on June 25, 1997.
3. After the eruptions, the majority of the island’s population fled the island, mostly for the United Kingdom.
4. The population in Montserrat, at present, is approximately 5000 people.

Calvin Air Helicopter tour of Montserrat volcano by Luxury Locations Real Estate Antigua.

Nadia and Sam Dyson take a trip with Calvin Air on a tour from Antigua over to Montserrat to see the active volcano by helicopter. This is one of the best things to do in Antigua and active volcanos are a rarity to see, the destruction that can be seen at first hand is epic and it is well worth the trip from Antigua to Montserrat to see the volcano. The trip is around 45 minutes with Calvin Air Helicopters which leaves from Darkwood beach area. Mark Fleming is a great host and pilot which makes a wonderful trip.

Upon takeoff we head over Darkwood beach and down the west coast of Antigua before making the 30 mile trip to Montserrat.

On the way over we look for whales and Mark tells us a little of the history of the island and the volcano.

The island of Montserrat is approximately ten miles long by seven miles wide, similar in size to Antigua.

We approach Montserrat form the north east over Spanish point heading for the Sourfre hills volcano, the highest point on the island.

From this point you begin to see the destruction caused by the volcano with huge swathe of the hillside stripped bare in contrast to the green hills to the north of the island

Before 1995 the island was a popular holiday destination and was home to the legendary AIR studio owned by George Martin the producer of the Beetles.

Opened in 1979 the Air Studio in Montserrat played host to recording sessions by a who’s who of rock and pop. More than 70 albums were recorded, with starts such as Dire Straits, The Police, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, Ultravox, Lou Reed, Black Sabbath and Eric Clapton all having recorded albums at the Montserrat Studio.

The Soufrière Hills volcano is the island's highest point; in 1995 it was 3002 ft high, it has now grown due to the creation of a lava dome, with its current height being 400 ft higher than in 1995.

On 18 July 1995, the dormant volcano in the southern part of the island, became active. A month after the first visible activity was noticed, the first major eruption took place in August 1995 which covered the nearby town of Plymouth (the capital of the island) in a thick layer volcanic ash.

Plymouth and the whole of the southern part of the island was evacuated and more than half of the population abandoned the island to live elsewhere in the world. Leaving less than 1200 on the island in 1997. When there was a huge volcanic eruption which killed 19 people, buried most of Plymouth and destroyed the airport in a pyroclastic flow.

An exclusion zone, encompassing the southern half of the island was imposed because of the size of the existing volcanic dome and the resulting potential for pyroclastic activity. Visitors are generally not permitted to enter into the exclusion zone.

Now Relatively quiet since early 2010, the volcano continues to be closely monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory.[8][9]

Montserrat is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants

A pyroclastic flow [1] is a fast-moving current of hot gas dust and rock (collectively known as tephra) that flows along the ground away from a volcano at average speeds of (62 mph) but is capable of reaching speeds up to (430 mph).[2] The gases and tephra can reach temperatures of about 1,000 °C (1,830 °F).

After circling the south of Montserrat volcano we head back to Antigua to take short helicopter tour of the south west coast of Antigua and Cades reef.

A wonderful day with Calvin Air and Mark Fleming

Road Trip Montserrat Part 5 - Brades/Cudjoe Head

The Road Trip: Montserrat video series shows Montserrat returning to some semblance of normality in the aftermath of the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano. The eruptions have subsided over the past several years but the volcano is still in an active state. Restrictions have been relaxed on access into some parts of the evacuated zone including the destroyed capital, Plymouth. Reconstruction in the northern 'safe zone' is an ongoing process.

Montserrat's Northern end is quite green and lush. There are some beautiful back roads such as this with some great views as they wend through the thick vegetation of the mountainside. On Montserrat, A Unique Festival blends African and Irish Heritage

On this episode of Destination Diaspora, we take you to Montserrat!

Montserrat is known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because of its lush green landscape and the fact that many of its early settlers were from Ireland. It’s the only place outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s day as a national holiday.

On Montserrat, Saint Patrick’s day became a national holiday in 1985 but not to celebrate St. Patrick, who is patron saint of Ireland. And the 10-day festival which takes is not just about parties and fetes although speaking from experience they are really good.

Montserrat’s St. Patrick’s festival actually commemorates the enslaved Africans known as the freedom fighters who lost their lives after their planned Saint Patrick’s ay slave rebellion set for March 17th, 1768 was discovered. Although unsuccessful, it was the beginning of movements for the abolition of slavery on the island.

So the St. Patrick’s festival is really about honoring the memory of those freedom fighters.
Black people, people of African descent and the role they played in helping to bring an end of slavery. On Montserrat, the holiday weaves together two heritages, acknowledging the early Irish influence while honoring the enslaved Africans who rebelled against it.

LOST CITY OF PLYMOUTH ~ MONTSERRAT ~ Volcano Exclusion Zone ~ UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

Take a step inside the forbidden exclusion zone V of the old capital city of Plymouth, Montserrat, a modern Pompeii. Destroyed by several volcano eruptions over the past 20 years.

We obtained the correct special clearances/permits from the MVO “Montserrat Volcano Observatory”, the local Police and had an approved guide to enter the V exclusion zone. All sites visited, ground filming and arial filming was done in accordance to all local laws. This footage was shot within regulation of Montserrat use UAV/ drone flying rules flying procedures within regards to locations and flight hight limits.

Montserrat (/mɒntsəˈræt/) is a Caribbean island—specifically in the Leeward Islands, which is part of the chain known as the Lesser Antilles, in the British West Indies. It is a British Overseas Territory. Montserrat measures approximately 16 km (10 mi) long and 11 km (7 mi) wide, with approximately 40 km (25 mi) of coastline. Montserrat is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants.
On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrat's Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the island's population was forced to flee, primarily to the United Kingdom. The volcanic activity continues, mostly affecting the vicinity of Plymouth, including its docking facilities, and the eastern side of the island around the former W. H. Bramble Airport, the remnants of which were buried by flows from volcanic activity on 11 February 2010.
An exclusion zone that extends from the south coast of the island north to parts of the Belham Valley was imposed because of the size of the existing volcanic dome and the resulting potential for pyroclastic activity. Visitors are generally not permitted entry into the exclusion zone, but an impressive view of the destruction of Plymouth can be seen from the top of Garibaldi Hill in Isles Bay. Relatively quiet since early 2010, the volcano continues to be closely monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. It is the most studied volcano in the world and Montserrat is regarded as a 'Modern Day Pompeii' in the Caribbean.
A new town and port is being developed at Little Bay, which is on the northwest coast of the island. While this construction proceeds, the centre of government and businesses rests at Brades.
