In this episode we go to Scilla, a fisherman village which is famous also for the Odyssey. In the Odyssey, Odysseus passes through a treacherous, narrow strait: on one side is Scylla, a murderous, multi-headed monster on the jagged rocks.
If you are looking for a beautiful and charming town to visit in Italy, then Scilla is a great option. With its stunning scenery, historical attractions, and delicious food, Scilla is sure to please.
The best time to visit Scilla is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild, but if you enjoy the beach summer is the best season.
The town is easily accessible by car or train.

Partiamo dalle coste, uno dei maggiori tesori della Calabria. La regione vanta alcune delle spiagge più belle del paese, come Tropea, una città costiera con una vista panoramica mozzafiato sul mare, e Capo Vaticano, una penisola che offre una vista spettacolare sulla costa tirrenica. Inoltre, la Calabria è famosa per le sue spiagge di sabbia bianca e acque cristalline, come ad esempio la spiaggia di Caminia, una delle più belle della regione. Tra le città costiere più belle troviamo appunto Tropea. È famosa per le sue spiagge di sabbia bianca e le acque cristalline del Mar Tirreno. Tra i luoghi di interesse ci sono la Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Isola, il Castello Normanno e la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. La città è anche nota per la sua cucina tradizionale, tra cui la famosa cipolla di Tropea.
Roccella Ionica è un comune italiano della provincia di Reggio Calabria, situato lungo la costa jonica della Calabria. Ha una popolazione di circa 7.000 abitanti ed è famosa per le sue spiagge e le sue acque cristalline. Inoltre, nel centro storico del paese si trovano diversi monumenti di interesse storico, come il Castello Carafa e la Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Pietà.
Ma la Calabria non è solo mare: oltre a questo non dimentichiamo l'Aspromonte che è una catena montuosa ed è situata nella parte più meridionale degli Appennini e si estende per circa 50 km. La cima più alta è il Monte Alto che raggiunge un'altezza di 1.956 metri sul livello del mare. L'Aspromonte è una zona molto importante dal punto di vista naturalistico e paesaggistico, caratterizzata da boschi, fiumi, laghi e spiagge. Inoltre, la zona è nota anche per la cultura e la storia, con numerosi siti archeologici e testimonianze dell'antica civiltà greca. Uno dei paesini caratteristici dell'Aspromonte è Gerace che si trova sulla cima di una collina a circa 500 mslm.
Gerace è famosa per il suo centro storico medievale ben conservato, con numerose chiese, palazzi e monumenti di grande valore storico e artistico. Tra questi, la Cattedrale di Gerace, dedicata a San Giovanni Battista, è uno dei principali luoghi di interesse della città.
Altri luoghi di interesse a Gerace includono il Castello Normanno, costruito nel XI secolo, e la Chiesa di San Francesco, un edificio religioso francescano risalente al XIV secolo.
Passiamo adesso a parlare della città di Reggio Calabria situata sulla costa dello Stretto di Messina di fronte alla Sicilia. Con una popolazione di circa 180.000 abitanti, è la città più grande della Calabria e uno dei principali centri economici della regione.
La città ha una lunga storia, che risale al periodo greco antico, quando era conosciuta come Rhegion.
Reggio Calabria è nota per i suoi splendidi panorami sullo Stretto di Messina e sulle montagne circostanti, nonché per il suo ricco patrimonio culturale. La città ospita il Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, che contiene una vasta collezione di reperti archeologici greci e romani, tra cui i celebri Bronzi di Riace, due statue di bronzo di guerrieri greci del V secolo a.C.
La città è anche famosa per la sua cucina che offre piatti tipici della tradizione calabrese come la 'nduja, un salume piccante a base di carne di maiale e peperoncino, e la pasta con le melanzane.
Reggio Calabria è inoltre un importante centro commerciale e turistico, con un porto che collega la città con la Sicilia e altre destinazioni nel Mediterraneo.

Plati - Beautiful Village, Beautiful People - Tracking the T's, On the Road in Italy- EP7
Upon my retirement Terri and I decided to travel as much as possible while we were still able to do so. The Covid pandemic had other plans but we were fortunate to have been able to move about freely for several years beforehand. While there remains a limitless list of places to go and things to see throughout the world, we concentrated our travel to many of Italy's cities and small villages as well as the historical sites throughout most of its regions both north and south and in between. When asked to pick a favorite location it is truly difficult to choose one over any other. Every region of the country has beauty and interesting chracteristics in its own right and the food and wine of course speaks for itself no matter where you happen to be. But as the offspring of parents who were both raised in Calabria, I cannot help but have a special place in my heart for the landscape, the history, the food and above all, the warmth and hospitality of the people who call this region of southern Italy home. Although my father was born and raised in Calabria, my mother as the youngest child of seven ironically returned to the homeland of her parents when her mother tragically perished in a home fire in upstate New York. It was here in Plati that she and her siblings grew up, a small Mediteranean village at the foot of the extremely rugged, yet beautiful Aspromonte mountain range in southern Italy between the Tyrannian and Ionian seas.
In and around the engagement of a new world war in Europe, my American born mother returned to the states and specifically to Pennsylvania with several of her siblings. It was here that she would later be connected to her future husband and my father through an older sister of his who had earlier emigrated to America - from Plati, the same small Italian village not only a world away but one from which my mother as an American born citizen just happened to be raised herself!
Another transatlantic voyage later witnessed my mother return to the adopted home of her childhood in Plati to marry my father which several of the clips captured on film many years ago help document in this video. Our personal experience in discovering the homeland of my parents and ancestors was made possible by several of my cousins who accompanied us in our travel and who introduced us to residents and neighbors of Plati that opened up their hearts and homes to us on each and every occasion we have visited. These are the most beautiful, gracious and welcoming people in the world to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude and now consider a part of our FAMILY!!
