Places to see in ( Bourges - France )
Bourges is a city in central France known for its half-timbered houses. The grand, Gothic-style Bourges Cathedral features 13th-century stained-glass windows. Close by, the ornate Jacques Coeur Palace was the home of a 15th-century nobleman. Exhibits at the Musée du Berry include an Egyptian mummy, agricultural tools and Etruscan bronzes. Displays on evolution are among the highlights at the Natural History Museum.
Bourges is accessible by train from Paris Austerlitz in about 1 hour 45 minutes, or on the A71 motorway from Paris via Orleans. The cathedral of Saint Etienne, a UNESCO heritage site, dates from about 1200-1255. It's an exceptionally fine and most original work of French Gothic architecture, with double aisles and an immensely high nave. It has preserved almost all the original stained glass of its ambulatory, and some of the high windows of the choir. There are also some lovely later windows in the side chapels. The crypt and towers can be visited for an extra charge.
The Palais de Jacques Coeur was built from 1443-1450 by Jacques Coeur, the richest man in France and banker to Charles VII. It's a flamboyant work, highly decorated and punctuated by stair turrets and towers just like the castles in the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry - another Bourges inhabitant. The interior can only be visited on a guided tour, for which a charge is made.
The Marais, to the north of the historic centre, is an area of allotment gardens divided by canals. A walk all the way round will take you 2-3 hours and give you excellent views of the cathedral. Go at a weekend and you'll probably see some of the gardeners punting through the canals to their plots.
The whole city is full of lovely houses, some in half timber, others in the light stone that is characteristic of Bourges. Rue Bourbonnoux and Rue Coursalon are particularly worth visiting.
Palais des Echevins / Musee Esteve is another medieval mansion which borrows its vocabulary from the Palais Jacques Coeur, built 40 years earlier.
Musee de Berry - a free museum of local traditions, in another medieval mansion. Musee des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France - this museum, opposite the cathedral, displays works of craftsmanship which have been made for the MOF diploma. Currently (Jan 2007) it has a display of fine hand-made knives in the exhibition room. Free entry, and worth a look.
You can go to the 'Plan d'eau' which is an artificial lake to have a 6km-walk. It's also possible to use your bicycle or rollers around it on a lane separated from the road - it's relatively flat. In april, there is a music festival called 'Le Printemps de Bourges' where, during around 1 week, around 30 official concerts (prices varies) are given in the city (in several places, sometimes at the same time). The programme may be fetched in early March. During this period, most of the pubs and bars also have bands playing (for free) and the whole city gets a lot of animation.

The Jacques-Heart Palace is a mansion located in Bourges , considered by the elegance of its architecture, the richness and variety of its decoration, as one of the most sumptuous civil buildings of the xv th century and a masterpiece of civil architecture of Flamboyant Gothic style . This building was born from the desire of the rich merchant Jacques Coeur to build a big house in his hometown, but the financier of Charles VII never lived there. Built in the xv th century foreshadows the mansions that will flower in the Renaissance.
This palace is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by the list of 1840. Owned by the State since 1923, it is managed, animated and open to visitors by the National Monument Center. The construction of the Hotel de la Chaussée, which cost 100,000 gold crowns, began the same year and seems to have been completed in 1453 , when Jacques Coeur fell out of favor in 1451, imprisoned until 1454, before to escape and take refuge in the Greek island of Chios , where he died in 1456. The palace was confiscated, with all its furniture, by King Charles VII , who was jealous, and by the crown.
Finding no buyer, the king finally returned in 1457 to the sons of Jacques Heart, Henri, Ravan and Geoffroy, before experiencing various fortunes. It was sold in 1501 by the son of Geoffrey with a local notable, Antoine Turpin, who sold himself in 1552 to Claude Aubespine The Secretary of State for Finance.
Awarded by judicial decree to the Minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert on May 13, 1679 , the latter surrendered it to the municipality of Bourges onJanuary 30, 1682. It is settled various administrative and judicial. The house was later modified little, although the Revolution occasioned the destruction of various bas-reliefs and especially that of the equestrian statue of Charles VII , who occupied the canopy of the entrance porch from the beginning.
The palace includes private spaces (chamber of galées , treasury room) and public spaces among which rooms with social function (Salle des Festins) and utility rooms (office with hatch, heating room and kitchen, drying rooms, cloakroom), a donjon, three courtyards, a chapel, eight spiral staircases, a pigeon loft and an interior courtyard framed on three sides by open arcade galleries in basket handle.

Lallemant The hotel is located in Bourges ( Cher ) and kept the name of its builders, Jean Lallement , three members of the same name from a wealthy family of merchants originally from Germany and arrived in Bourges at the xiii th century . The land where the building stands was acquired on November 6, 1467. The previous buildings were destroyed by the great fire of Bourges in July 1487 . The construction of the hotel took place between 1495 and 1518. The set is a remarkable example of the late Louis XII style and the first French Renaissance . The hotel Lallemant is the subject of a classification underhistorical monuments by the list of 1840
The Hotel Lallemant is built on the Gallo-Roman ramparts of the city. Because of this position, there are two courtyards: the high court (where the main entrance was) and the lower court (current visitor access), separated by a few steps. The buildings of the building overlook two streets: rue de l'Hotel-Lallemant and rue Bourbonnoux; the second is lower than the first, and one reaches the central court by a vaulted passage. The Renaissance exterior is particularly elaborate around the bays and turrets of the high court. The fineness of the ornamentation has assumed the intervention of a team of Italian artists.
The palace is adorned with an impressive array of decorative sculptures, in the form of pilasters , cornices , capitals , lamp-posts , columns , pediments , fireplaces, medallions, soffits, moldings. The decorations represent objects, such as cornucopia , shells, foliage , ovals, arrows, tridents, cups on fire, or characters. Some are typical, like a phoenix, the fool, an eagle, birds, or more clearly identified, like Saint Christopher , ParisPriam's son. On the arched landing of warheads, a monk with a mute phylactery, another in prayer, a third with an open book, another vigilant, a carpet adept.
The interpretation of the sculptures of characters in the esoteric and alchemist sense has been widely developed, since Fulcanelli , Jacques van Lennep , or Michel Bulteau : the madman with the helmet of Mercury, the alchemist with the matras, the scrutineer of nature, the blower, the lover of secrets, are so many names for characters carved in cornice in the building.
The hotel consists of two main buildings, one on the street of Hotel-Lallemant, formerly rue des Vielles-Prisons, the other on rue Bourbonnoux. The hotel Lallemant is built partly on the remains of the Gallo-Roman ramparts of the city, higher up. Because of this position, there are two courtyards: a high court and the lower court, separated by a wall and a small staircase a few steps. The interiors communicate through an inclined passage. The Renaissance decor of the high court is probably the work of a team of Italian artists the terracotta medallions, balusters and shells framing the windows of the turret, the belvedere crowning the stair tower. Of these circular medallions inlaid with figures of terracotta on the bottom of the shell, there are only four, two men and two women.
The façade on Bourbonnoux Street has three levels and is pierced by two classic-style dormers. The imposing cornice is centered around a rectilinear pediment. This transformation, as the facade overlooking the courtyard, corresponds to the changes made by the Dorsanne family xvii th century; on the pediment are carved their coat of arms. The decoration of this facade is gothic except for the central span which possesses elements of Italianate style which one finds on all the doors and openings of passages: berries framed by pilasters with flat drums with a decoration of vases and foliage of a great finesse, ornamented with figures in mascaron or fantastic animals, all in low relief. The adjacent wall is pierced by a door and two small windows whose support is very high above the ground.

Although the main attraction in Bourges is the Cathedral (shown in another video), this french city has a lot more to see. The second attraction in Bourges is the gothic palace of Jacques Coeur, one of the most interesting and best preserved gothic residences in Europe. Then Bourges has a lot of interesting and picturesques streets, like the Rue Bourbonnoux, with many half-timbered houses and the steep Rue de Linières.

A few dozen kilometres from the centre of France is the Cher region and its capital, Bourges. The city is known for its rich history as the home of Jacques Cœur and the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Every summer for the past 15 years, Bourges has been bathed in blue glow, providing a spectacular trail. Light shows are also projected on the city’s most iconic and monumental architecture, recounting the history of the interim French capital of the 15th century.
