Derby Canal series - Borrowash (Shacklecross) lock to Anglers Lane by drone | DJI Mini2 | 4K

Have you ever wondered where the Derby Canal used to run? Well in this video and future ones I will by flying my drone along the old route of the Derby Canal from swarkestone to Sandiacre in sections.
In this episode I will take you on a journey starting at Borrowash Bottom lock and ending at Anglers Lane, Spondon.

???????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????????????????? ???????? ???????? ???????????????????? :
00:00 Starting in the east end of the lock chamber of Shacklecross Lock (Borrowash bottom lock).
00:09 Flying past the recesses where the bottom lock gates sit in the lock chamber wall.
00:15 The cill of the upper part of the lock.
00:20 The route of the former Derby canal.
00:55 Station Road, Borrowash (B5010) crosses over the canal route.
01:10 The route of the former Derby canal.
01:38 the route bends around now towards Ullickers bridge.
01:47 Lets fly under Ullickers bridge.
02:04 Flying up to see the canal route again.
02:11 Ullickers bridge from above
02:28 Hobson Drive Park in view.
02:48 Canal bends left here
03:09 Wheeldon Brothers estate, this 240 metre section is in water !
03:38 Anglers Lane coming into view.
04:22 the two wind turbines come into view.
04:26 Landing back at Borrowash Bottom lock.

Technically this was a difficult flight because the canal runs adjacent to the railway line and you have to keep 50 Metres away from Network Rail infrastructure so this meant pulling up to 164 ft (50M) before I got near the railway lines, a lot of this flight is around the 280 foot mark. By 0:54 the canal is right next to it but I was 305 foot up at that point. The second issue is Pylons, Derwent power station is over to the left of this area and there are Pylons emanating from it so I had to plan my flight in advance to make sure I was well clear of them.

How to explore the Derby Canal using my Google Street view photography.

Please note that at the time of writing this (May 9th 2021) I have surveyed 6 miles of the Derby canal for Google Street View, the section from Sandiacre all the way to Station Road, Spondon. This is an ongoing project and will take a few months to complete.

In this guide I will be showing you how to explore the route of the Derby canal using Street View photography that I have taken. This allows you to virtually walk along the route of the canal so you can see what it looks like today. In time as sections of it are restored I will resurvey them with street view, in those areas look out for the clock icon allowing you to select a different time period for the 360 degree view.

After watching this video, you will be able to confidently use Google maps and view Street View images along the former Derby canal route. You will know how to drag and zoom around the map and how to view and navigate your way along the route.
If you only have a smartphone then you will need to make sure you have installed the free Google Maps app first, this is available in the App Store on Apple devices or from the Play Store on Android devices.

Smartphone guide starts :

If your not sure where the Derby Canal used to run then check out my accurate map of the complete original route :

Derby Then and now : Florence Nightingale statue, London Road, Derby 1955 to 2024 | 4K

A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new. Best viewed on a large screen in full screen mode.

Description : The Florence Nightingale statue, London Road, Derby, Derbyshire.
Details : Scene showing the Florence Nightingale statue outside the former Derbyshire royal Infirmary (DRI).

Things to look for : The DRI was demolished a few years ago so in the background you can now see The Nightingale Quarter. As you can see the statue is in need of a good clean, maybe this will be done soon.
Do you have any memories of this area ?

Photo A taken : 1955
Photo B taken : 10th February 2024
Time elapsed : 69 years

Derby Past & Present - in fading Photographs.
High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!

The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime Im publishing then on my YouTube channel like this one.

Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the YouTube app?

Bass' Recreation Ground Derby by drone - Flood alleviation scheme. June 2022 | 4K

There has been a lot going on at Bass's rec in the last few months, trees have been cleared to reveal the old Mill fleam so that a pumping station can be installed to prevent flooding.
In my drone flight I will show you a current view of Bass’ Recreation Ground, this park was given to the people of Derby by Michael Thomas Bass, MP of Derby 1847-1883 (grandson of the founder of the famous brewery from Burton on Trent).
This land carries a covenant which restricts its use to “be forever used and enjoyed by the inhabitants of the Borough of Derby for public play and recreation.”
The land is 4 ½ hectares and contains a skate park and in the past has often been used by circuses and events such as Derby Feste. This triangle of land is surrounded on the north side by the river Derwent, to the west by the inner ring road (A601) and on the south by Station Approach (A6).
There are two footbridges which connect to this land, one takes you over the Mill fleam and one takes you over the river Derwent.

This is a little drone flight I did over the area so you can see what it looks like now (June 2022).
60 trees were felled as part of plans for the next stage of the city's Our City Our River (OCOR) flood defence project. They have been cleated ready for the erection of a pumping station to protect Derby from future flooding as part of a £95 million project.

The exposed former Mill race is used to take the culverted Markeaton Brook to the River Derwent.
Some people have assumed this was the old Derby Canal but its not, The Derby canal ran parallel to this mill race. Markeaton brook goes into a culvert at Ford Street (behind Agard street) and passes under the city and emerges here to connect with the Derwent.
See this section of water on my Derby Canal map :

At 02:04 you can see me showing the view using my high resolution 360 degree photographs and the difference between 2021 and 2022.

Information on my drone flying :
● My drone is a Class C0 drone sub-250g type, because its such a lightweight drone (236g), I'm allowed to fly it over residential and commercial property and people (but not crowds) without permission.
● I passed the theory test and have both valid flyer ID and Operator ID's.
● I have drone insurance (£5 million public liability insurance cover).
● I strictly follow all the CAA guidelines on flying my drone.
● I always fly in Cinematic mode (slow speed) as this is safer in urban environments.
● I plan all of my flights in advance of taking off to ensure I know my complete flight path and am aware of any obstacles in the way.
● In order to maintain VLOS (visual line of sight) with my drone I use extremely bright Strobe lights, if there are trees or buildings in my way then I have to land and carry on from a different location this means that I often have to join bits of flights together, I try and line up edits using telemetry to match altitude and position etc. but its not always possible to get good joins in clips so this can mean jump cuts and fades between clips.
● I carry out a risk assessment before each flight and ensure all batteries fully charged, GPS has a good fix etc.
● I always engage with anyone nearby informing them the reason for my flight.

Thanks
Andy

Derby Canal series : M1 to Draycott Canal cottages | DJI Mini2 | 4K

Have you ever wondered where the Derby Canal used to run? Well in this video and future ones I will by flying my drone along the old route of the Derby Canal from Swarkestone to Sandiacre in sections. In this episode the journey starts at M1 Motorway and ends at the Derby canal cottages on Hopwell Road, Draycott.

This video is made out of many small flights which I have joined together, it was a right pain to do this section, in order to maintain VLOS I had to take off in the middle of a section I wanted to film then fly out to the edge and fly as far as I could see it the other way then land then move to the middle of the next block. Because there are a lot of trees in some of these sections I had to drive to 4 different locations and walk quite a few miles! I got though 6 batteries during this section. I apologise for the poor joins and jumps in the footage due to this.

I would like to say a big hello to the many people I met while out filming this.

Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the YouTube app?

Thanks
Andy

Milford, Derbyshire by drone. A town built on the River Derwent. Feb 28th 2021

Enjoy a lovely drone flight over the town of Milford in Derbyshire. Milford was built on the banks of the river Derwent and as you can see the power of water was harvested by means of weirs to power the machinery in the many mill buildings that sprung up around here during the industrial revolution.
Until I'd flown my drone over here I didn't quite realise just how many mill races, sluices and water wheel pits there were here.
