A Capital do Papel: Telêmaco Borba, PR - Brasil - Ep. 48 (S04E06)

???? VIDEO EXCERPT ????
Some people say that beauty is difficult to define. I disagree. Beauty is a combination of qualities that please the aesthetic senses.

What is subjective is what each person finds pleasing to their sense of beauty. I once met a guy who considered that black fabric for furniture was better than gobelins or jacquard. He said he was a minimalist, and that is why he preferred plain, dull black. Later on, he revealed that it was not the black that was more beautiful for him, but he preferred it since it was more difficult to spot stains when it got dirty.

So, in this list, you can expect cities that please the senses. At least they pleased mine and all my companies when we visited them.

I am also not evaluating anything else other than the aesthetic criteria. Some of the cities with low scores fare remarkably well in other things, like history-filled Bucharest. All these cities, however, are relatively safe, and none of them figure among the most dangerous cities in Europe.

Each city is rated from 0 to 10. It may be cruel, and if anyone has any point to make, feel free to do so in the comment section.

However, once more: this is not supposed to be an insult, and while some cities may not be the most aesthetic, they have their own qualities.

With no further ado, it’s time to start. Since the article is about the most beautiful cities in Europe from worse to best, we start with the ugliest.

Where Do Most Brazilians Live Abroad? (The 2nd Place is a SHOCK!)

Where do most Brazilians live abroad?
It is not surprising that many Brazilians live in the United States, particularly in states such as Florida...

But what if I told you that two countries, both with populations of less than 11 million, have the proportionally largest Brazilian diasporas, second only to the United States in absolute numbers? Discover it in this video!

It is not new for Brazilians to move to Lisbon. Even one of the Portuguese kings, Dom Pedro IV, was a Brazilian emperor before assuming the crown on the European side of the Atlantic. The colonizers went to South America and built a nation from the scratch, and some of the most splendid Brazil historical towns, like Paraty, are also gems of Portuguese architecture.

Still, much more common until a few decades ago was for Portugal’s former colonies in Africa and Asia to send their citizens to Lisbon.

Where do most Brazilians live abroad? A Surprise.
While in absolute numbers, the US has the largest Brazilian diaspora, proportionally to the population, it is Paraguay.

Brazilians residing in neighboring Paraguay are known as “Brasiguaios”. In some areas of the country, especially near the border, Brasiguaios make up 10% of the population. Ciudad del Este, a border city with almost 100 thousand Brazilians mentioned a few paragraphs above, has a population that is almost 30% Brazilian.

The best places for digital nomads to live: How the Brazilian Ibiza rose to the top.
Florianópolis is a city with almost 500k inhabitants in the state of Santa Catarina. This state in the southern region of Brazil was called, for a few occasions, the Brazilian Ibiza, for being the darling of South American upper-class youth. It is now a favorite place of national celebrities that turned (very) affordable.

Reasons like delightful beaches, pleasant climate, and 3 of the best clubs on the planet (including the 1st place in the annual DJ Mag club ranking, Green Valley) contributed to the just comparison between Santa Catarina and the Mediterranean islands.

Cost of Living in Florianopolis
The devaluation of the Brazilian real made life in Florianopolis much cheaper for tourists. In 2014, the dollar was worth 2.3 reais and now it’s worth 5 reais. That means you can spend less than half while buying more things like clothes, food or entertainment.

???? VIDEO EXCERPT ????
I had a relative murdered there. Colleagues assaulted. Acquaintances victims of pick-pocketing. For all those motives, when someone asked me Is São Paulo Safe? the obvious answer should be a big, bold no, certainly not.
However, this is not my opinion. At least not nowadays.
Short answer: São Paulo can be considered a safe place.
For the long answer, first things first: São Paulo can be either one of the 26 states of Brazil or the capital of this same state. The city has a population of 12.2 million people. This makes it the largest city in Brazil, and one of the largest cities in the world. There is another article where we wrote about the best Brazilian cities you are interested in living in Brazil.
Only São Paulo state alone has an area equivalent to the entire United Kingdom, and a population comparable to Spain.
It is important to have those dimensions in mind. We must remember that Brazil is a continental country when we talk about violence. While I would classify Brazilian cities like Maceió or Belém as very dangerous, the question about São Paulo depends on a few conditions.
Below I will list the three main reasons to maintain that the largest city in Brazil is safe.
1st — The violence in São Paulo is very location-specific.
São Paulo (the capital city, not the state) has 96 districts. 33 of those districts have a homicide rate smaller than the USA (4.8 per 100 thousand inhabitants).
On the other hand, 28 districts have a homicide rate higher than in Nigeria. Some districts, like Jaçanã, are more violent than Mexico.
Other districts, like Jardim Paulista, are safer than Germany.
Probably the reader is guessing, correctly, that those enormous discrepancies have their origin in income levels and the presence of law enforcement. This may lead to the following conclusion:
If near one-third of the districts are super-dangerous, then it is dangerous to live there because people need to go to different parts for different reasons!

Reasons to move to Brazil and the best places to live.
If you tell most Brazilians (even myself) that you want to leave a stable, developed country because you are moving to Brazil, they will get surprised. In fact, often Brazilians are moving to Europe due to issues such as safety.

After the astonishment comes the question: Why do people move to brazil?

While individuals in cities with higher living standards – like Curitiba – may give you a few reasons, this will not be the case for most of the country. In fact, it is more likely that they will upfront inform you of some challenges you will face.

And challenges are plenty, as are opportunities.

In this article we will tell you:

Is Brazil a good place to live?
Reasons to move to Brazil.
Reasons to not move to Brazil
Cost of living in Brazil
Best places to live in Brazil for expats
The safest place to live in Brazil
Best place to live in Brazil for pensioners
Best paying city in Brazil for english teachers
Is Brazil a Good Place to Live?
Short Answer: It is if you earn your income in Dollars or Euros (not relying on the unstable Real exchange rates) and is planning to live in a place like Florianopolis, one of the best cities in the world for remote workers, Brazil is a good place to live. For other cases, better check the reasons to move to Brazil (or not) below.
Reasons to move to Brazil
1 – Instability creates opportunities
The constant ups-and-downs of the Brazilian economy have its own idiomatic expression by the locals: Vôo de Galinha (chicken flights), due to its short-lived duration.

While this instability creates the need for safeguards like a low-risk (and often dollarized) savings account, varied investment portfolio, and multiple sources of income, it comes with few advantages.
Not everyone can protect themselves against one or two economic turmoils per decade. Therefore, after each one of them, the survivors have plenty of good-quality real estate, assets, and even companies to invest in for advantageous prices.

2 – The exchange rate is very favourable, for now.
The constant economic turmoils, especially in the last two decades, created an opportunity for people with income in foreign currency: the exchange rates.

Brazilian Reais lost near 70% of their value in the last decade. With this devaluation came some serious bargains, like beachfront apartments in one of the best state capitals for less than 500 dollars per month.

???? VIDEO EXCERPT ????
In this episode, I will show you five of the best countries to drink coffee in the world.

1) Italy
Italy is widely recognized as one of, if not, the best coffee blending countries on earth.

And here’s something to keep in mind: Italy is not a coffee-producing country. They get their beans from places like Brazil, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. They are, nevertheless, masters of the craft of mixing several types to get the most sublime quality.

Renowned for its cappuccinos and espressos, quality coffee is an art in Italy, and it’s an art that they do extremely well. Even non-coffee drinkers can usually find themselves sipping a high-quality Italian espresso or cappuccino because they don’t think of it as just coffee like people do when drinking out at home.

Famous Italian Coffee Brands
If you are an average coffee appreciator, there are several Italian brands you’ll have heard of. You may have even had one of their coffees before.

What about Lavazza, Kimbo, illy, Vergnano and Segafredo? These brands dominate Italy when it comes to coffee. It’s not hard to see why they’re so popular: they use high-quality beans which can be found throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia. If you want a great cup of Italian-style coffee (and don’t mind shelling out), then try any of these three.

What type of coffee do Italians use?
Southern Italians, particularly in Sicily, prefer a stronger-flavored blend of arabica and robusta, whereas northern Italians prefer a full-arabica type.

What coffee to drink in Italy?
Caffè normale is simply an espresso, served black and in one shot. Italians drink caffè normale all day long and at any time — with breakfast, between meals, etc. Take your espresso calmly and feel the scent before drinking it.

Drinking coffee in Italy is like a daily rite (sometimes multiple times per day). Almost every town you go to, even some small villages, will have a cafe with incredible coffee for you. So what kind of coffee should you drink in Italy? Should you stick with Italian brands or try something new?

The airplane manufacturers analyzed
The data used for our ranking is from the Aviation Safety Network (ANS), a private initiative started in 1996. Multiple kinds of planes, from airliners to military transport planes to corporate jets, are registered. The network keeps track of safety problems with all these machines. Conclusion: Is Argentina a good place to Retire?
Yes, it is, but if the question is:

Is Argentina a good place to live?
Then the answer gets more complicated.

There is a considerable space for misinterpretation because often people consider that a good place for retirement is also a good place to live under different circumstances. This is not the case in Argentina.

The life of a resident with his income in Euros or Dollars will be completely different from someone else with a local job and earning in Argentinian Pesos. Said that, and considering only the case of people with earnings in foreign currency, here are the pros and cons of living in Argentina.

Advantages of retire in Argentina
Low living costs (in foreign currency).
Pleasant weather and diverse climate.
Not much of a cultural shock for anyone used to western, and specially southern-European habits.
Spanish is an easy-to-learn language if you are an English speaker.
Relatively safe when compared to neighboring countries, with crime levels similar to the USA.
Disadvantages of retire in Argentina
Unstable economy
It is relatively dangerous when compared to Europe. (If you prefer the safety of the old continent, there is also a list of the best cities to retire in Europe).
A low percentage of English speakers (only 6% of the total population).
Most of these advantages and disadvantages would apply not only to retirees but also to digital nomads and remote workers. Unfortunately, these two categories have an additional problem in Argentina: free Wifi is not a popular thing there and Internet is unreliable. However, the best city for digital nomads in the world is not far from there...check my other videos to discover it!

???? VIDEO EXCERPT ????
I had the idea of working on a list of the best cities for remote workers after seeing content creators that make over $2000 per month saying that they will abandon their projects and return to a 9-to-5 job because the money is not enough to pay for their expenses.

That surprises me for 2 reasons:

1st — I live in a city where $2000 is more than enough for a comfortable life. Only what Medium pays me would be enough. And it is in a safe, comfortable country bordering Germany.

2nd — When I check where those ranting content creators live, I see cities like London, Chicago, or Melbourne. Yes, it is complicated to pay the bills with $2000/monthly in any of these places.

But why do they live there?

One of the greatest benefits of content creation is that you can do your thing anywhere in the world, as long as you have a laptop, a good internet connection, and, at least in my case, decent coffee and a cup warmer.

If you are a content creator — like me — or planning to be a remote entrepreneur, this list of the best cities for remote workers is for you. I selected the best cities in the world for people like us to live in and spend little.

To move from a business center like London or San Francisco to one of these places is the difference between living in a shared apartment in a crime-ridden district or in a spacious villa in a green neighborhood.

In this episode, I give you the options — 4 cities in Europe, 3 in South America, and 1 in Asia. The choice is up to you.

Best Countries in the World to Retire in 2023! (Even if you are young).

How did I think about the best countries to retire?

There are multiple rankings about the best countries to retire to on the internet. Here, we used objective criteria like cost of living, bureaucracy, healthcare, and climate. Not only they are great to retire due to age, but also to live as a digital nomad or remote worker!

Useful links:
1st – 1st – Buy travel insurance that also covers theft-related expenses. Although it is often very inexpensive to purchase such insurance in Europe (even in the most dangerous cities of some European countries), many people ignore this small precaution and end up disappointed. I recommend the company Ekta:

2nd – Book a transfer in advance (both from the Galeao or Santos Dumont Airport) to your final destination. You can use Get Transfer for that:

3rd - Viator has some GREAT tourist guides to save your time and show you the greatest parts of the city (with safety!):

4th - For finding some of the best hostels in Rio (and there are some nice ones in Copacabana and Ipanema!), I use Hostelworld:

???? VIDEO EXCERPT ????
Now that the criteria considered are clear, it is time to start the rank of the 15 best countries to retire in a high style.

15: Ireland
Average Score: 72.6

This island nation full of friendly people and with a turbulent history scored very high results in development (95 on a scale from 0 to 100), fitting in & entertainment (86), and healthcare (84), but low results in Visa & Residence (62), Discounts (60), Housing (60) and Climate (58) pushed it to a not-impressive 15th place.

14: Peru
Average Score: 72.6

Peru scored a near-perfect score in Cost of Living (92), and also had good marks on Climate (87) and Visa & Residence (82). On the lower side, it scored only 56 on two important indicators: Development, and Benefits & Discounts.

13: Uruguay
Average Score: 74.5

Uruguay didn’t score high (above 90) in any indicator, reaching decent notes in most elements like Development (88) and Governance (84) and low but not tragic notes in Climate (58), Housing (66), and Opportunity (69). Just enough for 13th place.

12: Cambodia
Average Score: 74.6

Cambodia marked a whopping 93 in Cost of Living. I remind my last trip to that country where paying prices that in Europe would put me in a Hostel, I could enjoy a boutique hotel with massagists. On the unpleasant side, Cambodia scored 57 in Climate — it is a steamy, sultry country — and 62 in Benefits & Discounts.

The Pros and Cons of Planning to Retire in Peru
For sure some of the pros of living in Peru are already known. You won’t be surprised to find this country among the seven best Spanish-speaking places to visit, with attractions such like the delicious food, lower living costs and pleasant weather. But how low are the living costs, and how pleasant is the weather? And what are the downsides? (You can be sure that there are downsides).
So first, let’s have a deeper look at the favorable and negative points of retirement and living in Peru.
Cost Of Living
Peru offers an affordable cost of living, making it an attractive destination for retirees looking to stretch their retirement savings. According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Lima, Peru’s capital city, is 54% lower than in New York City. Housing costs are particularly affordable, with a one-bedroom apartment in Lima costing around $400 per month.
Peru is one of the least expensive countries in South America, despite having a quality of life and HDI superior to places like Colombia or Brazil.
Currently, Peru is the 7th among the best countries for expats in all Latin America and the low cost of living is one of the reasons for such good rank. There are cheaper places in South America, like Colombia, but their development level is also lower.
Weather
Peru’s diverse geography offers a range of climates, but much of the country enjoys warm, pleasant weather year-round.
Private Healthcare is Affordable
Private healthcare in Peru is generally more affordable than in the US and is available in big cities like the capital Lima, and the quality is much better than the average public hospital.
Compared to the United States, private healthcare services in Peru can be significantly cheaper. For example, the cost of a routine doctor’s visit in Lima can be as low as $30-$50, compared to an average cost of $200 in the United States. Many doctors from private hospitals are familiar with medical care for foreign nationals.
Foreigners Can Buy Property in Peru
Foreigners can buy property in Peru, and this is something that differentiates this South American country from many others. Poland, for example, does not allow non-Europeans to buy land, unless they are already in the country for a long time.
