THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE USA??? 7-Day West Virginia Road Trip Itinerary

We spent 7 days driving around the Mountain State on an amazing West Virginia road trip itinerary. We didn't really know what to expect when we booked our United States trip here, but we had a feeling it would be good. And wow were we impressed!

We started off by visiting the picturesque, European-style village of Shepherdstown before making our way to historic Harpers Ferry. This place played a big role during the US Civil War, and it was so interesting to check it out. The famous Appalachian Trail also passes right through here, so of course we had to go for a hike.

Next up was Seneca Rocks, known as one of the best short day hikes in the eastern United States. The views from the top were incredible, and the trail was exhilarating with the sharp drops on the ridge.

We made our way to Blackwater Falls State Park, and couldn't believe just how stunning the waterfalls were! A night at Blackwater Falls Lodge was the perfect rest before driving to our final destination.

Our road trip in West Virginia finished up at New River Gorge National Park, the newest national park in the United States, and after checking into our cabin at Adventures on the Gorge we went off in search of more hiking trails.

On our last day we went whitewater rafting on the New River with Adventures on the Gorge. The Class 4 and Class 5 rapids were absolutely crazy, but our excellent rafting guide Doug looked after us. What a way to finish off our West Virginia itinerary!

We honestly believe that this state could be one of the best kept secrets in the USA. Our West Virginia road trip was simply awesome and we were so surprised to find out that not too many other Australian tourists make it out this far. No doubt that will change with all the fantastic things to do in West Virginia finally getting out there.

How To Find The Rock Pools At Blackdown Tablelands National Park In Queensland

Wondering how to get to the rock pools in Blackdown Tablelands National Park in Queensland? In this video we show you how to find the famous Instagram swimming hole as well as the absolutely stunningly beautiful nearby Rainbow Falls in Blackdown.

Read our entire guide on how to find the rock pools in Blackdown Tableland National Park including timings and whether to visit Rainbow Falls as well.

READ OUR ARTICLE BELOW:

Blackdown Tablelands National Park (QLD)

During our trip ‘once around Australia’ we will create highlight videos about the places we liked the most.
This video is about Blackdown Tablelands (QLD). It is located in Central Queensland and is a must see!
Once you get there, there is a steep road leading up to the top of the tablelands and Horseshoe Lookout. From this lookout you have a stunning view over the Bowen Basin and it is recommend to watch the sunset there. If you wanna drive a bit further in, the only option is a really bad dirt road with lots of corrugations. It will bring you to some small hikes and a campground as well as to the Rainbow Falls where you can swim in the rock pool. This was our absolute favourite!

We hope you enjoy the video and follow our trip as well as our next highlight videos!

???? Explore Charleville Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Charleville

???? Explore Charleville Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Charleville

In Charleville, Queensland, you can see the Bilbies, go stargazing at the Cosmos Centre and learn about World War 2 history.

00:00 Introduction
01:02 Charleville Bilby Experience
01:48 World War II Secret Base
03:02 Graham Andrews Parklands
04:30 Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns
04:44 Wander around Charleville
05:26 Painted Water Tower Mural
05:38 Cosmos Centre

On our recent visit to Charleville, we started the day by learning about Bilbies, then visited the World War 2 Secret Base and wandered around the Graham Andrews Parklands. We then walked along the streets of Charleville, saw the silo art and ended the day at the Cosmos Centre.

Charleville is home to the largest Bilby breeding program in Queensland, and you can learn more about them at the Bilby Experience. There is an informative keeper talk several times a day, and then you see the Bilbies in their specially designed nocturnal house. Make sure to book in advance as this experience is very popular.

The World War 2 Secret Base is an interactive exhibit where you will learn what 3500 American Army Air Force Troops were doing in Charleville in 1943. It is open daily from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm; they also offer a Tag a Long Tour, where you drive around to explore six unique sites.

At the Graham Andrews Parklands, you can wander along the pathways and enjoy the water features and sculptures; you can then take a rest on the Big Red Chair.

The Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns were used to try and break the drought in 1902 by firing them into the cloudy sky to try and produce rain.

We wandered around Charleville and looked at the lovely old heritage buildings, colourful murals and quirky artworks.

Guido van Heten painted the Charleville Water Tower mural, which features four children intertwined through sport.

From April to October, The Cosmos Centre is open from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm, seven days a week, and you can explore the interactive Cosmos Shuttle and watch a documentary in the Star Gazing Theatre for free. You can also book a Planetarium Show, a Sun viewing or the Big Sky Observatory Tour.

Unfortunately, the evening Big Sky Observatory tour with the outdoor telescopes was cancelled due to cloudy weather, so we did the backup option, the Planetarium Virtual Observatory, in the dome.

Other things you can do in Charleville are the Historic House and Museum, Corones Hotel Tour, Angellala Bridge Explosion, Royal Flying Doctors Visitor Centre and Outback Date Farm Tour.
