Welcome to Vaihingen. Vaihingen may date back as far as 799 AD, but the documents are not clear. In 1252 documents refer directly to Vaihingen as a town, established by Count Gottfried von Vaihingen. This town was besieged in Thirty years war by both Protestants and Catholics.
In 1944 a Vaihingen concentration camp has been set up nearby as part of a secret program known as Stoffel to relocate Messerschmitt manufacturing plants underground, protected from Allied bombing raids. The prisoners here worked 12 hours a day on starvation diets, and mortality rates were high. By the fall of 1944 operation Stoffel was abandoned and most of the prisoners reassigned to other camps, notably Bisingen, Hessental, Dautmergen, or Unterriexingen. The Wiesengrund camp retained some slave laborers, but became a destination for sick prisoners who were effectively left there to die. On 7 April 1945 the camp was formally liberated by the 1st French army.
In the video I will show you the city with it's spectacular Fachwerk(half-timbered) houses, main square, which is transformed into a huge sandbox for children, Peter's Church (Peterskirche) and the Kaltenstein Castle.

We were really excited to visit some of the castles in Germany as part of our 2018 Road Trip. Hohenzollern Castle is the first one - and what a way to start!! It's a beautiful castle- we hope you enjoy sharing the visit with us. Hohenzollern Castle is possibly my new favourite castle- although there are plenty more to see during our motorhome tour so perhaps my view will change!

Burg Hohenzollern (deutsch: Über diesen Ton Burg Hohenzollern (Hilfe · Info)) [n 1] ist ein Schloss etwa 50 km (31 Meilen) südlich von Stuttgart, Deutschland. Es gilt als der Stammsitz der Hohenzollern-Familie, die im Mittelalter entstanden und wurde schließlich deutschen Kaiser.
Das Schloss befindet sich auf der Oberseite des Berg (Mount) Hohenzollern befindet sich auf einer Höhe von 855 m (2.805 ft) über dem Meeresspiegel; 234 m (768 ft) über den Städten Hechingen [n 2] und in der Nähe Bisingen, im Süden. Beide werden am Fuße der Schwäbischen Alb. Die Burg wurde im frühen 11. Jahrhundert errichtet.
Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte das Haus Hohenzollern Split in mehrere Zweige, aber das Schloss blieb im Besitz des schwäbischen Familienzweig, der die dynastischen Senioren des Franken-brandenburgischen Kadett Zweig, erwarb später einen Kaiserthron waren. Im Jahre 1423 wurde das Schloss komplett nach einer zehnmonatigen Belagerung durch die Königsstädte von Schwaben zerstört. Ein zweiter, wurde größer und robuster Burg 1454 bis 1461 gebaut und diente als Zufluchtsort für die katholische schwäbischen Hohenzollern in Kriegszeiten; einschließlich der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts, aber die Burg wurde gedacht, um ihre strategische Bedeutung verloren haben und es nach und nach verfiel, die zum Abriss mehrerer verfallene Gebäude. Heute bleibt nur die Kapelle von der mittelalterlichen Burg.

Hohenzollern Castle (German: About this sound Burg Hohenzollern (help·info)) [n 1] is a castle approximately 50 kilometers (31 mi) south of Stuttgart, Germany. It is considered the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern family, which emerged in the Middle Ages and eventually became German Emperors.
The castle is located on top of Berg (Mount) Hohenzollern, at an elevation of 855 meters (2,805 ft) above sea level; 234 m (768 ft) above the towns of Hechingen[n 2] and nearby Bisingen, to the south. Both are located at the foothills of the Swabian Alps. The castle was first constructed in the early 11th century.
Over the centuries the House of Hohenzollern split into several branches, but the castle remained the property of the Swabian branch of the family, who were the dynastic seniors of the Franconian-Brandenburgian cadet branch that later acquired an imperial throne. In 1423 the castle was completely destroyed after a ten-month siege by the imperial cities of Swabia. A second, larger and more sturdy castle was constructed from 1454 to 1461, and this served as a refuge for the Catholic Swabian Hohenzollerns during wartime; including during the Thirty Years' War. By the end of the 18th century, however, the castle was thought to have lost its strategic importance and it gradually fell into disrepair, leading to the demolition of several dilapidated buildings. Today, only the chapel remains from the medieval castle.

Vlog # 6 takes us to an unexpected place called Hohenzollern Castle in Germany. What a beautiful surprise it was, as we had no intentions on visiting this place until that day when we google things to do in the surrounding area...ahhh the beauty of travel. We had a situation with our airbnb host denying us once we arrived. This was the day after Christmas, so we were left stranded. After some phone calls, a bit of stress, we managed to get it worked out and away we went to Germany.

Best of the Best Castles: Burg Hohenzollern
Burg Hohenzollern is one of our favorite castles in Germany. It is perched atop a hill, and has a glorious outlook over the valley. It was rebuilt several times, but only after the most recent rebuild did they discover the case mates- places the knights used for secret entrance to the castle, and where they hid in case of fire. It is argued that this shelter is just as protective if not more that most modern-day bomb shelters.
One of our favorite rooms in the castle is the blue room, or the queen's salon. Be sure to also visit the treasury! There you will find lots of prizes, in addition to several cherished goblets with the castle molded onto the cup. There is something for everyone at Burg Hohenzollern!
