Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. South of town, Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus has a restaurant with alpine views. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum chronicles the Nazi era. Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden illuminates the salt mine’s 500-year history. Lifts lead to Obersalzberg and Rossfeld ski areas. To the south, trails cross Berchtesgaden National Park.
Berchtesgaden is a municipality in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, near the border with Austria, some 30 km south of Salzburg and 180 km southeast of Munich. To the south of the city the Berchtesgaden National Park stretches along three parallel valleys. Berchtesgaden is often associated with the Watzmann, at 2,713 m the third-highest mountain in Germany (after Zugspitze and Hochwanner), which is renowned in the rock climbing community for its Ostwand (East Face), and a deep glacial lake by the name of Königssee (5.2 km²). Another notable peak is the Kehlstein mountain (1,835 m) with its Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest), which offers spectacular views to its visitors.
Berchtesgaden's neighbouring towns are Bischofswiesen, Marktschellenberg, Ramsau and Schönau am Königssee. The municipality of Berchtesgaden counts the following villages which are (Ortsteil): Am Etzerschlößl, Anzenbach, Hintergern, Metzenleiten, Mitterbach, Oberau, Obergern, Obersalzberg, Resten, Unterau, Untersalzberg I, Untersalzberg II and Vordergern. The Berchtesgaden National Park was established in 1978 and has gradually become one of Berchtesgaden's largest draws. Mass tourism is confined to a few popular spots, leaving the rest to nature-seekers. Major tourist draws are the Königssee, the salt mine, the Kehlsteinhaus (open seasonally as a restaurant). and the new Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg (built on the site of the former guest house Höher Göll). It is the first German museum of its kind to chronicle the entire span of World War II in one spot. An InterContinental Hotel Resort was built where the house of Hermann Göring stood, on the Göring hill.

Berchtesgaden and The Eagles Nest Germany // World War 2 Road Trip
We continue our tour of Europe WW2 sites, visiting the southern Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden and the Eagles Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus.
The Eagles nest of was one of the last places liberated by the allies in World War Two, marking the end of World War 2 in Europe.
The HBO Series Band of Brothers made an episode about this part of the war, and as Kelly's dad is a huge BOB fan and WW2 history buff, We had to go and check it out.

Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. South of town, Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus has a restaurant with alpine views. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum chronicles the Nazi era. Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden illuminates the salt mine’s 500-year history. Lifts lead to Obersalzberg and Rossfeld ski areas. To the south, trails cross Berchtesgaden National Park.
Berchtesgaden is a municipality in the German Bavarian Alps. It is located in the south district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, near the border with Austria, some 30 km south of Salzburg and 180 km southeast of Munich. To the south of the city the Berchtesgaden National Park stretches along three parallel valleys. Berchtesgaden is often associated with the Watzmann, at 2,713 m the third-highest mountain in Germany (after Zugspitze and Hochwanner), which is renowned in the rock climbing community for its Ostwand (East Face), and a deep glacial lake by the name of Königssee (5.2 km²). Another notable peak is the Kehlstein mountain (1,835 m) with its Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest), which offers spectacular views to its visitors.
Berchtesgaden's neighbouring towns are Bischofswiesen, Marktschellenberg, Ramsau and Schönau am Königssee. The municipality of Berchtesgaden counts the following villages which are (Ortsteil): Am Etzerschlößl, Anzenbach, Hintergern, Metzenleiten, Mitterbach, Oberau, Obergern, Obersalzberg, Resten, Unterau, Untersalzberg I, Untersalzberg II and Vordergern. The Berchtesgaden National Park was established in 1978 and has gradually become one of Berchtesgaden's largest draws. Mass tourism is confined to a few popular spots, leaving the rest to nature-seekers. Major tourist draws are the Königssee, the salt mine, the Kehlsteinhaus (open seasonally as a restaurant). and the new Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg (built on the site of the former guest house Höher Göll). It is the first German museum of its kind to chronicle the entire span of World War II in one spot. An InterContinental Hotel Resort was built where the house of Hermann Göring stood, on the Göring hill.

Exploring Berchtesgaden, Germany in the Bavarian Alps
Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, is south of Berchtesgaden and it can be reached by a short bus ride from Berchtesgaden's main bus station.
A bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is the cheapest option if you plan to visit the town from Salzburg. Bus 840 is a direct bus to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg with no transfers needed and is 20 minutes faster than the train. You can buy a ticket from the bus driver in cash. The bus ride takes about 55 minutes.
Schwabenwirt hotel is just about a 3-minute walk from Berchtesgaden train station and bus station (Berchtesgaden Hbf) and a 15-minute walk to Berchtesgaden Market Square (Marktplatz).

Hiking in Bischofswiesen ~ Götschenkopf - June 1, 2021
The Götschen ski area is located above the village of Bischofswiesen, Bavaria, in the midst of the fantastic mountain landscape with a clear view of the Lattengebirge. We hiked up the beautiful forest paths and open fields to the top. It was an easy hike up but the views were amazing!

Im Nationalpark Berchtesgaden gibt es unzählige Wanderungen & Bergtouren. Für jeden ist etwas passendes dabei. Wir nehmen euch in diesem Video mit auf eine Bergtour im Berchtesgadener Land.
R O U T E
Wir starten am beliebten Königssee. Jährlich zieht der See tausende Besucher aus der ganzen Welt an. Auch uns hat er mit seiner ikonischen Kulisse in den Bann gezogen und ist für uns immer einen Besuch wert.
Unsere heutige Tour beginnt mit einer Bootsfahrt am Fuße des Watzmanns. Erstes Zwischenziel ist das Westufer mit der Wallfahrtskirche Sankt Bartholomä. Von dort aus steigen wir zu der schönsten Aussicht auf den Königssee auf.
Während der Hauptsaison fährt das erste Boot um 08:00 Uhr vom Königssee ab. Es steuert zwei Stationen an: St. Bartholomä & Salet Obersee. Infos zu den Fahrzeiten und Ticketpreisen erhaltet ihr hier:
Nach etwa 35 Minuten erreichen wir die erste Haltestelle. Ein Besuch der weltbekannten Wallfahrtskirche St. Bartholomä ist sehr zu empfehlen. Uns führt der Weg zunächst am Ufer des Königssees entlang.
Von dort aus steigen wir über den Rinnkendlsteig in Richtung Archenkanzel auf. Da es sich um eine schwarz ausgewiesene Stiege handelt, ist Trittsicherheit und Schwindelfreiheit erforderlich.
Zu Beginn geht es für uns steil durch eine Waldpassage hinauf. Von Zeit zu Zeit eröffnet sich uns ein toller Blick auf den Königssee. Das beste Panorama erwartet uns jedoch noch weiter oben.
Über spannende Wege und leichte Kletterpassagen erreichen wir die für uns schönste Aussicht auf den Königssee und Sankt Bartholomä.
Nach einer kurzen Pause mit diesem tollen Ausblick begeben wir uns wieder auf den Rückweg.
Die Tour runden wir zum Schluss mit einer Erfrischung im eiskalten Königssee ab.
Mit dem letzten Boot fahren wir zurück zu unserem Ausgangspunkt und beenden diesen wundervollen Tag im Nationalpark Berchtesgaden.
